Shir by this point had gotten to a point where he sort of had a handle on how to read his girlfriend. He could interpret her little ticks and cues about as well as anyone he was close to. He kind of figured whatever was getting to her, it had to do with her family. Maybe that would subside, but then her cousin went missing. Of course she was pretty freaked out about that. Who wouldn't be concerned about the only blood relative they had left going missing?

Still, maybe it was too much? Lately things seemed to be intensifying steadily. The mood swings were pretty noticeable. Then there was her crying over that sword guy at the center. Shir was in the process of trying to bring it up. He figured now would be as good a time as any, he said he was coming over to her place to hang out. Serious talks always made him nervous, especially when he was the one opting to voice concerns.

Shir stood at her door and knocked in his usual way. "Hey it's me," he called.

Madeline got entirely the wrong idea about Shir's motives.

When he showed up, her room had been a little more picked up than usual. She had on that perfume he liked, and her computer had on the playlist that they sometimes listened to when they made out. It was playing quietly enough that her roommates wouldn't hear it through the walls, if they were still in their rooms.

She opened the door and pulled him in, closing the door behind them, grinning. "Hey, it's you."

Oh no she was in a good mood...

A really good mood, she was ready like this was just another normal date night. Maybe he could salvage it? Of course, none of this changed the fact that he was happy to see her. It just made it that much harder to bring up the what he wanted to bring up. Shir gave her a hug and a kiss after she let him in.

"So, how're you doing?" he asked, trying to sound normal. Was he being too awkward? If he was then she was probably picking up the vibes.

Madeline picked up the vibes. Something was off.

They hugged, they kissed. She led him over to her bed so they could sit down together on it. "Better now that you're here. And I had a headache earlier, but I took a pill for it so I'm fine."

She'd had a lot of headaches recently, now that she thought of it. Maybe it was tree pollen or something.

"How are you doing?"

"I'm doing fine. We bought that giant lego Millennium Falcon, So I guess that's the next big thing I'll be helping with at home. Um... I'm just kinda worried about you. I dunno, you've been having those headaches and there was that thing in the community center the other day. Like... I dunno you'd tell me if something was off right?" he looked at her with genuine concern. Shir didn't think whatever it was, was life threatening. He just figured it was a demon thing... maybe.

"I didn't mean to dump like that but... I just... yeah..."

Oh.

This kind of talk didn't fit with their makeout playlist. She reached over to her bedside table and hit the pause button.

"No, I mean... it's fine. You're fine."

She thought about it for a second. Her mind started connecting the dots "I guess there's been some weird stuff going on with me. Now that you mention it. I've just... been chalking it up to a bunch of little things."

Not that she thought her parents' behavior over spring break was a little thing. But she tried not to think about it too much. That just made it hurt more. She thought that was probably why she had been acting funny.

"Like... Maybe the headaches are some kind of pollen thing? Or it could be hormones..."

"I dunno...I just wasn't sure if you'd even noticed or what..." Shir wasn't a medical professional of any kind so he had no idea what he could even suggest. Hormones made sense, maybe this was some kind of envy demon thing or something.

"Think it might be stress? You've been dealing with a lot lately too you know," he offered. "Er or maybe we could talk to the school nurse and see what they have to say about it."

"Maybe." She said. But she knew what the nurses would check for first.

Would Shir be thinking that, too? He didn't know about the symptoms that had set Madeline off. He didn't know about those drug-store tests she'd disguised herself to buy. Her fear, her relief - that entire emotional rollercoaster had been hidden from him.

"So... I already ruled out one thing. I took some pregnancy tests, because I thought it could be that. And they were negative, so." she shrugged, " I dunno, I guess I didn't think I should tell you about it."

She tried to act like it wasn't a big deal. With mixed success.

Shir blinked slowly as he went about processing this new information. On one hand, sure he was thinking maybe somehow they weren't as careful as he'd thought. On the other hand he was pretty damn sure they were as careful as he thought. He wasn't really mad, that wasn't the word for this. Surprised didn't quite cover it either.

"Well that's good, that's off the table. I was... kinda avoiding that idea. Still wish you'd told me," Shir admitted awkwardly. "I'm not mad or anything this is just a lot to process, y'know?"

Madeline shifted uncomfortably where she sat, nervously tugging at the sheets on top of her bed.

"I just... I didn't want you to get all worried about nothing."

Even if he said he wasn't mad, Maddie still felt like she had done something wrong. Like she was pushing Shir away.
