"Yes, I was trying to say that I might need to break a law to get that information." She nodded. They were on the same page there. "And we would both rather avoid me breaking laws, I'm sure."

As Colten went on about how he could help, Violet was stunned. "I... can't say I was expecting that much help." She could tell how irritated he was, but she couldn't read why. "I was just hoping to talk it out with someone. I didn't mean to impose that much."

But if he was willing to help her like that... well, it changed a lot about her situation.

Colten rubbed at one of his horns casually. "Agreed, it would be best if I didn't advocate for you breaking the laws here. That would make things quite a bit more difficult. As for what you expected... a lesser man might actually be insulted that you didn't think they would offer aid. You are of course free to decline any any assistance I offer but I do not mind helping you where I am able."

The demon turned to sweep his arm over the grounds of the decidedly gothic and demonic aesthetic of the entire estate. His tail flourishing in its own way as he spun into his favorite topic-at least his favorite non-writing topic anyway. "Look around; what is it you see here on this plot of land Violet? A house? A place for an eccentric author to flaunt his family's wealth? Grovefire has a much grander purpose. To remind the denizens of the island that demons deserve the comfort, respect and accommodations afforded to other species too. Whatever the circumstances of their arrival here. Humankind has their lobbyists and special interest groups. We have Grovefire and a network of contacts and connections."

Colten cleared his throat after the slight detour into grandstanding. "Ahem. At any rate, I should wish to support you if you would appreciate the assistance. Even if all you require is a supportive face to help talk through things with you." He was not embarrassed. But perhaps he did get a little too carried away.

Violet sat and considered Colten. It started to click for her: Colten was partly doing this out of pride. It was a kind of pride that extended beyond himself, to the whole demon community on Manta Carlos.

She remembered feeling that kind of pride. She felt as though her circumstances has extinguished it in her, to some degree. After the incident with her father, and suffering through possession, it was almost gone. She had been becoming more and more privately bitter. She wanted to feel that kind of fervor again. Maybe she could.

"I would absolutely appreciate your help. I just... spent a while on the streets before coming here, because I didn't want to make this anyone's problem that it didn't have to be. It's hard to accept help, sometimes." She took a calming breath. "So. Did you have any countermeasures in mind yet?"

Colten nodded once more. "I understand not wanting to burden others with your own troubles, or as the fae might say- incur debts, but sometimes that's exactly what needs to be done. If you wish to repay my kindness in the future that is your own decision to make."

His tail flicked as he rubbed his horn in thought. "Well the safest would be to lend you a bodyguard but that would render a job at the school significantly more difficult.. I could offer you private transport back and forth between here and the Academy and then a panic button of some kind to wear while there? Clearly not the most foolproof but that is probably the minimum that might help your concerns. Unfortunately its difficult not knowing the exact risks you ate facing."

He made himself sit back down by her instead of standing over her.

"Those would give me some peace of mind," Violet said, nodding. "I was scared of traveling to and from the school. That's when I would be most vulnerable."

She nodded for a few seconds, imagining how it would go for her to work or learn at the school again. Even with the security measures, she wondered if it would be worth it.

"Though, if I don't want to be at the school, or at least not yet, I had something else in mind. And I want to make it clear that I'm not *just* suggesting this to pay back your kindness, but also because I believe in the same things you do, and I might have wanted to pitch this at you anyway. I would like to help out more around Grovefire. And I have a lot of relevant experience."

Colten put his fingertips together as she shared her other idea. There were of course plenty of staff to handle most things at the Manor but on the other hand this was the type of thing he greatly hoped to encourage. "It would probably behoove you to have some proven experience and a reference for you if you wish to seek employment with the Academy. Which could be obtained here perhaps. What type of help were you looking to provide?"

His posture and general demeanor shifted slightly as he moved from impassioned supportiveness and an air of protection to something more appraising. Like this was turning into a miniature job interview, of sorts. "You did express interest in a nurturing role, though it was for one particular child."

Violet nodded. She was in interview mode too, now. Sitting up straight, shoulders back, one leg crossed over the other.

"Yes. I used to be a mother, actually." She took a breath. Fuck. The moment she started trying to do the serious interview thing, she ended up hitting on something that was really emotional for her. But it helped that she'd already cried her eyes out about it the other day - it was out of her system for now. After taking a second, and getting past any expression of sympathy Colten might offer, she would continue.

Okay. Back in job interview mode. Sitting upright, like a serious, confident, dignified woman. Almost the way Malara would sit at her desk, all CEO-like.

"So, I've already helped that boy a lot with learning how to speak English, which is his first language as far as we know. Thanks to that, I have a nice reference from his dorm parent to lean on. But my resume has things in it that could be more applicable to some of what you might need done for Grovefire. For example, outside of hell I was at one point the manager at a night club. My duties there included handling the financials, overseeing the floor to make sure everything ran smoothly, and putting in orders for supplies or maintenance.

"I also have experience with organizing fundraisers. And I have a broad knowledge of dark magics, summoning, and things of that nature, which I'm sure come up here on occasion."

Colten would probably notice that her spoken-word 'resume' sounded suspiciously like Chloe's. Chloe had even told Colten stories about managing her father's dance club, Gomorrah, before the entire structure mysteriously vanished.

Colten's tail flicked and he wore an expression of sympathy for a few moments but he purposely hadn't asked. It was not his business if she didnt wish to share the details on why she 'used to be a mother'.

But the other details started to ring familiar as she listed them off. Some of them even quite specific enough too. Colten held up his hand to request she pause for a moment. "It does sound like quite the resume you have. But I'm afraid I need to be quite direct if I am going to consider hiring you. Would I be fairly well acquainted with the demon lord you were previously a part of? I understand why you might be hesitant but I do need you to be honest with me here."

Violet looked like she knew that she fucked up. Just after she had started hitting her interview stride, too. She hesitated before saying anything else.

"Well..." she sighed. "Okay, fine. If you have to ask... you've probably already figured it out. So I might as well come clean. I used to be part of Chloe Black." She was terrified of having to say this out loud. Could she really trust Colten after this point? Trust him not to act against her?

"I came into existence as a side effect of the long night. I don't have all her memories, but our family just had a really bad experience with one of our souls becoming fragmented, and one of the fragments causing trouble. So when Chloe strolls back into hell packing enough heat to give true death to a god, I guess my survival instincts kicked in, and I ran away.

"I don't really know that she wants to kill me," Chloe admitted. "But I know that if she did, basically any kind of nudging I could do to find that out would put me in danger. And I don't know what losing my part of our soul is doing to her, or if she's desperate enough to eat me over it. So... please, don't talk to her about me."

If Colten was going to talk to her other self about this, Violet was considering running away again. Finding a new place to hide.

Colten pursed his lips in slight dismay but he had asked for the truth. And boy was it a truth to deal with. He liked and respected Chloe, hell he'd invited her and her daughter over for dinner after finding out little Amber was a fan of his work. But he took pride in his words having merit.

After closing his eyes and sighing he opened them once more and held eye contact with Violet. "This does make things far trickier than I had originally anticipated. But my offer of protection and asylum stands. You are a guest of Grovefire Manor and deserve my assistance regardless of situation. You have my word on that."

The request not to talk to Chloe about it would definitely strain things. And it was only a matter of time until the secret eventually was revealed one way or the other. "For the time being I will let this remain a secret. But it will eventually come out somehow- these things always do. My advice is to prepare for it. If you wish, down the road, we could make arrangements for you two to talk with a mediator. For now though, I appreciate your honesty and trust in me Violet." With that he offered her his hand to shake.
