The people of Grovefire Manor knew her as Violet Zatser. She had gotten a lot better at fake names, though to be fair she had spent a lot longer thinking about this one than "Zoey Grey." That was just embarrassing.

This morning, Violet had a dilemma. She could get a job that would give her a sense of purpose again - but in her mind, it might just end up killing her and causing a lot of people a lot of pain. Violet knew that Colten had a good head on his shoulders, likely a clearer and less troubled one than she had. So she set out to ask him for advice.

Colten was making sure some fancy new statues were getting set up properly outside of the manor. Violet walked up next to him. "Good morning, Colten. Is now a good time to talk?"

Colten calmly and politely advised one of the workers to use his sense that apparently wasnt so common and turn the statues to face outward not inwards and then he turned to smile at Violet.

"Of course Violet. It's still Violet right? Is this something for a public or private setting though?" His tail flicked towards the workers for emphasis. They weren't very close but one could never tell how sensitive people's ears were around the island.

"I'm pretty settled on that name now." At least she'd never called herself 'Zoey Grey' here. That might have been too obvious. She'd mostly just considered the names 'Violet' and 'Ginger.'

Violet looked at the workers, and then at Colten. "...Some of it is kind of sensitive." She wasn't sure she wanted people knowing that she feared for her life, or any hints about why. She had already resolved to disclose that to Colten.

"I can wait until you have time."

Colten nodded as if he'd expected as much. But then people typically didn't go out of their way to find someone to discuss something trivial. Typically. He watched the workers for another moment and then gestured to what was basically a gazebo built out of wrought iron instead of wood. With comfortable outdoor padding to sit in but the exterior definitely gave it a certain gothic style.

"How about we sit down then? Clearly it's something important enough that you've sought me out Violet." As he extended an arm to point towards the gazebo his tail looped around behind her in an arc. Not touching her of course, but reinforcing the idea that he was less asking and more telling her to come with him as he began to walk over.

Violet flashed Colten a slightly-relieved smile and walked with him to the gazeebo. Her tail swayed as she walked, accidentally brushing against Colten's once or twice.

She spoke as they walked. "On an unrelated note, though, I really love what you've been doing with this place. The aesthetic is just perfect. It's so dark and classy, and it's actually been a bigger comfort for me than I would have expected. I don't feel as much like I've fallen from grace, if that makes sense."

They reached the gazebo. Violet would wait for him to choose where to sit or stand as they spoke. She appreciated that his seats were designed with accommodations for tails in mind.

Colten kept quiet and ignored the first time their tails accidentally bumped into each other. The second time though he quietly apologized and flipped his tail back around behind him more to be out of the way. She was already headed with him in the right direction anyway at that point.

"I'm pleased you find it so hospitable here. It is no small amount of effort keeping things suitably adorned and appointed for the demonic palette, but I take pride in ensuring the comfort of my guests," he smiled and chose to sit where he could keep at least some of the workers within his eyesight as he focused on the conversation with Violet. "I would perhaps suggest you don't treat staying here like a 'fall from grace' as you say. Perhaps..."

He trailed off to consider how to re-conceptualize her stay on the island in a more positive way. "Perhaps this is actually more of an opportunity. There is much here to learn and challenge you. Much to manipulate too , if that is more your inclination." He gestured for her to sit with him in the gazebo and there was a faint dulling of the outside light and sounds of the distant work. Despite the open air appearance, the gazebo was clearly a place with at least a modicum of privacy afforded to its temporary tenants.

If Violet was being honest, she liked the contact. The situation she was in left her feeling touch-starved. She wanted to tell him not to be sorry, she didn't mind it at all... but that would be kind of creepy. She kept her mouth shut about that.

She sat down fairly close to him. She recognized this type of enchantment from a shopping trip she had gone on with her father, what felt like an entire lifetime ago.

"I was actually hoping to talk to you about some of the opportunities have here. I've already considered the possibility that I'm going to be here for a long time, so I've gone looking for them. First, of course, there's going back to school. I'm confident that I could get a bachelor's degree, between pre-arrival credit exams and one to two years of classes." It helped that she'd actually taken three years of college there already, but she didn't want anyone else knowing that.

"Secondly, I might even have a job opportunity there already, as a minder and language tutor for at least one of the children there - and possibly a dorm parent. I'm still not entirely clear on what the role would ask of me, but I'm one of the few people who can keep track of that boy. He has a habit of going invisible and wandering off by himself. I already have the boy's current dorm parent as a solid reference." So far, it would seem like Violet had a good handle on things. She had a lot more direction than most people who were so fresh on the island.

Now came the reason she wanted to talk to Colten about this. "My main problem with doing any of that is... well, I could get killed if I spend too much time there."

Colten listened to what she had to say carefully and with respect holding his comments for appropriate moments rather than interrupting. His tail comfortably coiling down through a gap in the bench to rest beneath him. "I'm quite familiar with, and an advocate for, pursuing a higher education. You may know that despite my activities and duties here I am enrolled in courses myself. Self improvement is a laudable goal. However you would have to choose whether to seek a job there or seek an education."

But his tail flicked anxiously as she stated her concerns "That concerns me a great deal though. Would you mind explaining what the risk or threat is to you? Perhaps we can set up some protections or special accommodations?" Seeing demons get hurt at the school had become a very big issue for Colten lately. Among many.

Violet fidgeted. Her tail also flicked with a similar nervous energy. She knew this line of questioning was coming.

"It's... complicated. And I have to operate on limited information, because finding more could either land me on the islets or kill me. Or both." She took a deep breath.

"So, here is the best explanation I can give. I used to be part of a demon lord. This demon lord is incomplete as long as I exist, so they probably want to assimilate me back into them, if they can. Their enemies would also probably want to use me against them, if they found out what I was. Any of them might want to kill me, or worse, and it's possible some of them might care more about getting at me than maintaining a presence on Manta Carlos."

She looked Colten in the eyes, studying his reactions. She was second-guessing even talking to Colten about it. He and Chloe talked, after all.

Colten raised an eyebrow as she went on further and then finally held up his hand. "The only reason you would be sent to the islets is if you were actively breaking a law or if you were threatening yourself or others. And I do not believe you qualify for that, unless you are quite different outside of these grounds."

He stood up and leaned on the railing beside where they had been sitting. His attention now fully upon Violet- the workers could be followed up with at a later point. "It would help if I knew which demon lord was a potential problem, but I want to make it crystal clear. I will not stand for any of my guests being harmed, transported or assimilated against their wills. If this demon lord has agents in the academy I might be able to arrange various forms of protection for you. I'm not infinitely wealthy but indo have resources and, perhaps more importantly, connections. If you'd prefer to look elsewhere for similar employment there is that option too, but it sounds like you've found someone you feel attached to."

Most of all Colten displayed the hallmarks of sheer irritation at the subject of one of his guests being at risk or threatened. His eyes had narrowed and the movements of his tail were sharper as it flicked back and forth. But any irritation was not directed at Violet. Plenty of the guests at Grovefire had special needs, this was just one of those.
