Shay sat overlooking the school on her lunch break. She sat on the waist-high wall of the tower, feet dangling over as she chewed her sandwich. It was nice up here, mostly empty because most people never thought to come here. She used to eat in the fields, or the cafeteria, but both had too many people.

For the past few days, Shay had been outt of commission and hadn't been at school. Sometimes that happened, it wasn't entirely unregular to have her miss days in a row due to sickness. Even still, she was good at keeping her illness under wraps. Most, even those in the gang, were surprised to learn of her physical health.

Maybe it had been the recent influx of stress or negative emotions, maybe she was pushing herself too hard, but her body was taking a real hit. Even the smallest bit of using her magic had put her in a coughing fit. It wasn't so bad, honestly. Mostly her time had been spent sleeping, with two hours or so awake every once in awhile. During that period she read or caught up on school work. Then she was back to sleeping things off.

Eroshay yawned and looked down at all the people below. They were as small as ants from up here. She didn't feel powerful, but she did feel like she'd been here before, metaphorically. Shay scoffed and finished off the last bit of her food with a good while of time left before her next class. She leaned forward.

Alain had just parted ways with his group of friends from his math class. Back in the states he'd usually eat by himself, cafeterias were too noisy for him. Even without superhuman hearing he wagered he would still find it hard to think with all the people around. The wolf boy needed some peace and quiet.

The library was too stuffy, and the lake always had at least one couple bordering on acts of cannibalism. Then there were the sports fields, but there was always someone he knew hanging around there. Not that he minded talking to people, he just didn't feel like talking to just any old person. Not to mention, he'd heard Roa Rosales may or may not be busting heads that way. He'd just bought fire proof clothes and gotten additional charms added to his jacket He was in no mood to test any of them out.

With all these options crossed out, the roof was the final option for him. At the very least, the view would be nice. He managed to catch a whiff of a familiar scent as he headed up the stairs. Eroshay Rosales, he initially met her when he started working at Jack's Butcher shop. Definitely one of the more interesting people he'd met on the island. Her attendance at school had been sporadic of late. Probably powers related, but he figured she'd bring it up if she wanted to talk about it.

"Ew, you want a cigarette with that fat slice of angst?" he teased as he made his approach then took a seat next to her.

Shay wobbled before snapping to attention. She'd been lost in thought, and the voice had sounded too distant as if she'd been underwater. When Eroshay saw who had approached and sat beside her, she relaxed and felt a mild blush stain her cheeks.

She had met Alain when he was working at Jack's and had been pretty quick to befriend and flirt with him. Sometime during the Pirate's Feast she'd asked him out and now they were semi-dating, she supposed. Sometimes she admitted he was her boyfriend, other times; she gave him a hard time.

Shay smiled softly and swung her feet a tad. "Nah, sorry. Dad said no smoking. Is it a candy cigarette? I could accept that. It would probably more accurately represent this moment anyway."

Shay giggled, then reached out to take his hand and squeeze it gently. "Come here often?"

He dug out a bag of Jolly Ranchers with one hand while he allowed his other hand to move closer to hers. The roof had a fairly decent view of the campus, he found himself taking it in for a couple seconds before focusing on Shay. She had asked him out at the Pirate's Feast, but that took a turn when he seemed hesitant to just dive right into a relationship. Now the status of the relationship was a fluctuating thing that depended mostly on Shay's mood. He was fine with this, but he still had tricks up his sleeve.

"Candy cigs are gross, I have a bag of Jollies though," he held the bag for her to see. He leaned forward a bit and stared down at the ground below. "I wouldn't say I come up here often, but it's a nice spot when you wanna get away from the noise. You ever feel like throwing things at people from up here?"

"I disagree," Shay said with gusto at Alain's claim that candy cigarettes were gross. "Just powdered sugar and gum. What's gross about that? I like using them to look cool." She rose her fingers to her lips and pretended to blow smoke, the chill in the air aiding her visual.

"That was me flirting with you dumbly, nerd." Shay scooted closer to Alain, until she felt the heat of his body beside her, even wearing all the layers she was. "Oh yeah, I wanna throw things at people all the time when I'm up high. Maybe that's why I don't have the power of flight, hm? Drop a penny. Maybe it'll kill someone."

She was quiet, staring downward intently. All the little people down there, with all their little problems. "You didn't have to come over and sit by me, you know. I wouldn't have been offended if you pretended not to see me and kept walking."

"I'll buy you some shades and a leather jacket to go with your candy cigs. But not like an expensive one, it's gonna be like maybe not real leather and from a thrift shop," he teased as he watched her mime the smoking. "You'll be Susie Savage the bad girl from some shitty nineties public service announcement."

Alain felt himself tense briefly but relax when she moved closer to him. Things seemed a bit awkward in his head now that they were in some early stage of dating. He'd play off his nerves like it was nothing. "I'll give you a solid C for that one, it was a super cliche line," the lycan's lips curled into a smug grin as he opted to close the gap between them. He noted how much more bundled up she was compared to him. "I feel like you'd have to try if you were going to kill someone from dropping something from up here."

He frowned a bit, watching the people below. Shay said she would have been fine if he just ignored her but he didn't buy it. Anyone who said something like that could usually use someone to talk to. "I mean you're not wrong I could have blown you off. But it's cold and lonely up here and it's really hard to ignore someone you like," He turned away, hoping to hide any hints that he was blushing .

"I know you're stronger than most people, but you don't have to act like you have to go it alone. If you need to take a load off I've got you."

"Susie Savage," Shay laughed, "I like that. Hates being called Susan. Wears bright red lipstick and dates a bad boy named Johnny."

Shay laid her head on Alain's shoulder. Hard to ignore someone you liked, he said. She supposed that was true, but more often than not, Shay was the one liking and not the one being liked.

"You know what being stronger than most people means?" She asked him, waiting a beat for him to say something before continuing. "It means you're lonely. You've had to be stronger because if you weren't no one would have been there to pick you up. That's really all it means. I'm not stronger, I'm just angrier and more stubborn."

Shay sighed, wanting to rub her cold face but suppressing the urge. "You know how many people have said that to me?" She laughed, but it wasn't at all a happy sound.

"Of course his name's Johnny. Actually it's Johnny Mayhem, he has a Mohawk and wears his sunglasses inside and at night," he added. "Together they're the power couple everyone loves and fears."

He wanted to say something. Maybe his statement wasn't accurate. He just put an arm around her. Alain gathered his thoughts as he listened to her. "Then maybe you're about as strong as everyone else then. I don't know, maybe scrappy is a better term. That's what anger and stubbornness is."

He looked at her, remembering the first time he met Shay at Jack's. She was something different that was for sure. A little intimidating even, something he knew didn't just stem from coming from a notorious mob family. He popped a Jolly Rancher into his mouth, sucking on it a little before he spoke up again, "You know, I thought about asking you out around when we first met? Back then I didn't think I was good enough for you. But look at us now."

"Scrappy makes me think of the annoying Scooby-Doo character." Shay was happy to have Alain's arm around her, nuzzled into the safety and warmth of his side.

She looked up lovingly at him when he wasn't gazing at her, taking in his profile. Winter had a way of making things look more beautiful than they were, but Shay thought Alain would have been lovely during any season. She'd never say that least of all now, feeling vulnerable and silly.

Drawn back to reality by his statement, Shay's mouth went dry, and she gave a nervous laugh. "Not good enough? Was it 'cause of the last name? That's what it usually is." Without that, she was a nosy little girl with more mouth than muscle.

"Well... I wish you had. Guess it doesn't make a difference now." She paused, waited for a beat and added in, "because we're dating now and all."

Breathing in the moment, lunch would be over soon, and Shay had no desire to return to classrooms and other kids. She could have sat up here with Alain for all eternity, caught in this one minute between them and that would have been good enough for her.

"How will we keep the magic alive? I mean, the chase is over, Alain. Now we'll have to do crazier and crazier feats just to keep interested. This is what pornography and the internet has done to our generation."

"Scrappy was the worst thing to happen in that series. Pretty sure the gang just murdered him and hid the body, Scooby-Doo Cold Case Files," compared to some of the other employees that worked at Jack's, Alain didn't tend to be as outwardly morbid, but he had his moments.

He looked down at her and made a face. Maybe he just shouldn't have mentioned that. He knew this was going to bug her until she got an answer. It was a strange thing to put into words, or at least say these thoughts out loud. "No, I mean I get that you guys are a famous family and all but you're still people. I mean it's pretty stupid, in all honesty," he forced an awkward laugh, "You know that voice in the back of your head that tells you 'no' and points out everything wrong with you? It was one of those cases. Kinda hard to put into words, honestly."

He looked at her and kissed her on the forehead and gave her a reassuring squeeze. Classes were about to start up again for the afternoon. The chase was over, but that didn't mean things were just going to die. Slow down sure, but they sure as hell wouldn't just die. Maybe it was a wolf thing, but he was willing to ride out the worst to keep things together.

"Internet pornography gives males ridiculous expectations for genitalia sizes, Shay," he shook his head.

"I think you're more likely to crash and burn if you just try doing crazier and crazier things. Relationships just kind of evolve you know? If you go fast and crazy it'll burn out, but if you take it slow and just move at an easy pace you'll last a lot longer. I'll be right here with you, I'm not going anywhere, and I mean that."
