Shay threw her head back and laughed at this. "Haven't they thrown him on the side of the road before? It's not hard to imagine they might have run him over or something -- accidently, of course."

She listened to Alain, trying to sync her breath with his as he was talking. His heartbeat was mesmerizing. "Infamous," she cut in to correct, smile tight and playful. The look smoothed out into something serious again soon after.

"Yeah," she said once he was finished, voice a little cracked. "I know that voice you're talking about. I get it." Shay wanted to point out that Alain was just perfect. He was loyal and kind and loving. She was the bad egg in their relationship. There wasn't any need to say it, so she didn't, deciding to let this moment be what it was. Something calm and tender.

Shay snorted, gave his leg a gentle slap. "You mean to tell me that's not how sex actually works? Gasp! I've been bamboozled."

She sniffed, went quiet as Alain promised not to leave her. To stand with her as everything went down. Her eyes stung a little, but she closed them and willed them away. High school romances had such a small chance of lasting forever. She breathed out in an agitated huff.

"I know you will." And for once, Shay believed that.
