download20200600011831.pngThe future was coming faster than Aj was ready for. With all the events of his life the last year, he had not began to consider what he was going to do when he finished school. He just assumed he would continue on into college, but what would he study.
Talking with his therapist a bit, the Phoenix decided to look into Scout training. After a short meeting with a career counselor, Aj had been put in contact with Angelo. It had taken a lot for Aj to actually reach out and arrange a meeting. The usually shy student was going outside his comfort zone, doing his best to get back to how he used to be.
Sitting in a private room inside the library, Aj fiddled with his fingers inside the pouch of his hoodie. He had arrived early, as his mother always told him that first impressions were important.

ANGELO GENOVESE

Angelo had never provided any sort of career insight before, but that much was to be expected. Angelo himself was still fairly young, and he'd only been a scout for a few months. Even so, he'd done fairly well for himself: his abilities were huge advantages in his chosen career, and even though he was young he had years of experience in a very related field.

Even so, Angelo suspected it was less his accomplishments and more his age that had caused him to be volunteered to talk to a student. Angelo was young, and in a word, relatable. He understood what it was like to be right on that cusp of maturity, having to pick a career and feeling like he was deciding his fate.

He still wasn't even sure he made the right choice, but at the very least he feels more confident.

He was dressed in casual clothes when he made his way to the private meeting room in the back of the library. He rapped his knuckles against the door before cracking it open, leaning in to find that the student he was supposed to meet was already there. Angelo offered a grin before stepping fully inside, closing the door behind him.

"Your were the student who had questions about scouting? I'm Angelo Genovese." He offered a hand, unsure of it the student was a new arrival or not. Maybe they'd heard of the other Angelo, or maybe he was the first Angelo they'd met.

A knock at the door snapped Aj out of his thoughts and back to the moment. When the door opened, he saw a head stick in and smile before the person walked in. Aj stood up quickly with a nervous smile on his face. He wasn't sure what to expect so he was relieved when it was someone closer in age to him.
"Oh. Yes. Hi."
A stammer and flood of words came out as he extended his own hands to shake Angelo's.
"Amery. Amery Johnson. But uh, I go by Aj. Thank you for meeting me Mr. Genovese."
Aj started to pull himself together finally. Even through everything that happened he never forgot his manners his mother had taught him. Age didn't matter for courtesy

ANGELO GENOVESE

Amery Johnson. AJ. Angelo had already known the Amery Johnson part, but his abilities hadn't given him the AJ.

"Nice to meet you. Angelo's fine - as so many people joke, Mr. Genovese is my father." He didn't think that was ever going to change, either. Basilio was just so... so Mr. Genovese.

"Someone over at the office said you had some questions about scouting? I can't promise I'll be able to answer all of them, since I'm fairly new, but I have a pretty good idea of how it all works, and I should be able to at least point you to an answer if I can't give you one myself."

He grabbed a seat, settling in and making himself comfortable.

His smile relaxed as Angelo made the joke about his father. Aj was relieved that he seemed to be a little more laid back than was expected. The Phoenix was already going well outside his comfort zone with this meeting.
"Yea I did. I've been on the island for a little over a year and am a senior. Gotta figure out my life right? Heh....or so I'm told."
Returning to his seat, he continued to explain his reasoning for the meeting.
"World gotta kinda turned upside down on me and I've been trying to get it back together. I wanna help people. And I know personally scouts can help. I just don't really know anything about the scouts."

ANGELO GENOVESE

The world getting turned upside down on people was... well, pretty standard. Even without knowing exactly what happened to AJ, he could understand, and he offered a smile in return.

"I get that. Similar story with me. Life as I knew it went out the window, I had to find my place here, and I wanted to help people. There's a lot of stuff about the scouts people don't... get. Like, I think the most important thing is that there's really three types of scouts: some scouts handle helping people get settled... kind of like social workers. Investigative scouts are the ones who find people out in the narrow reality. Sometimes that's following leads, sometimes it's checking in with contacts... It varies. Extraction scouts... are probably what most people think of when they think of the scouts. Breaking into organized crime rings to rescue trafficked metahumans, going in guns-a-blazing... that's extraction."

Explanation complete, Angelo turned the focus back to AJ.

"Any of those interest you?"

Aj listened very carefully as Angelo talked. His insight would be invaluable to helping come to a decision. Three different types of scouts. Honestly, the more he talked about it the more it made sense. He had never thought about it that way, but it all clicked in his head about how it worked. It might have been what happened to him that made it make sense, but Aj nodded showing he understood.
"Um well. Investigation doesn't really seem to be my thing. Personality-wise I'd like to think I'd fit in with with more social worker type? Ability wise, I unfortunately think I might fit into extraction."
Aj had a look on his face that didn't seem too confident about the last bit. He couldn't exactly reliably control his powers still, so thinking about needing them ready at any moment was a little daunting. But the social worker seemed maybe more his speed. Especially with what he had gone through.
"Do they ever cross any? Like, I dunno if this is the right wording for it all, but do Investigators ever do 'field' work? Or something like that?"

"Abilities are really a side point," Angelo clarified. "Extraction was something I considered due to experience, but one of my mentors sat me down early in training and told me, no holds barred, that I needed to choose the one I wanted to pursue. I can fight, but it wasn't what I would choose to do, so I went for investigation."

Simple enough, anyway.

"There's a certain amount of crossover that sort of comes with the territory. As an investigator, sometimes situations come up where waiting for an extraction team isn't really possible. Similarly, extraction sometimes needs to do some investigation when a situation requires it. Scouts get trained a bit in everything, we just all focus on our specific subjects."

"Ok. That makes sense. If you don't enjoy it you won't really ever do your best."
Aj thought for a moment about what he would really want to do. The social side of it all still seemed to stick out to him. To possibly help people adjust to a new life. He had been going through that himself and wanted to help others with the same issues.
"Ok, so I know I need to keep hoping through school. Is there any particular programs I should try to get into? Is the academy done simultaneously to school? How do I go about signing up for all this?"
He stopped for a moment and let out a small smile. A part of him was getting excited by the possibilities. He actually felt like he might find his way on the island afterall.
"Sorry...I should let you answer before asking the next question."

A lot of complicated questions, but he didn't mind them coming at him rapidfire.

"The program is pretty flexible, really. Depending on which program you go into, and what kind of experience you have, it'll vary a lot. The typical path for social work would be doing a four year degree in sociology or psychology, and then doing a few months of scout training to be brought up to speed on the scout-specific side of things."

Which was the exact opposite of what he did, really.

"Basically, you'd treat it like you were going into social work to start."
