Fweiu had just taken her first seminar on human society. She had finally been convinced of the value in doing such a thing. There was too much to learn for the insights of her spies to suffice. She would not have her people to stumble and bumble among the humans when they branched farther into the world. They would be well-educated! And she would be the first among them, leading the-

She sniffed the air. Another of her kind. Who the fuck was that?

Twirling in place, her eyes came to rest on a man with blue hair. Except, he wasn't a mere man, he was an ice dragon. He seemed familiar, but she couldn't put a name to the face, and this bothered her - she knew all of her people. Didn't she

Fweiu was staring at him now, making no attempt to hide it. Maybe this was one of the first children of the Antarctic colony. Yes, it had to be. So much for their isolation! She sneered.

"I wasn't expecting to see another of my kind here!" she approached him, talking loud, getting uncomfortably close. Grinning. "Tell me your name."

She would be a gracious victor, but only after she had gotten the gloating out of her system.

Shul was a cheery person, and things rarely got him down. This day was no exception. Shul was practically skipping and feeling over the moon for no particular reason. And to him that was the best reason of all.
He was in his more formal wear today since he had substituted at the elementary school today. Shul had a tie and everything, though now it was loosened. He had white dress shirt, black pants and loafers, for crying out loud. Shul must've looked like a whole different person. Would his kids even recognize him without his hoodie? Shul would have to show up at the daycare in this get-up one day and surprise everyone. Just the thought amused him and Shul chuckled as he turned around a corner.
And froze where he stood.
Shul smelled something so familiar he could almost feel the mountain wind beat against his face. It was one of his kind, an ice dragon. Shul looked around and saw someone. Someone who was indeed very familiar. Shul's good mood fizzled immediately.
What the actual hell was Fweiu doing here?
Shul stood where he was for a second, just gaping at her and feeling something he hadn't felt in a long time. Anger.
But when Fweiu suddenly whipped her head to Shul's direction he averted his gaze and pretended to look at the papers in his hand. Old habits die hard.
Shul could hear her getting closer and when Fweiu started talking Shuk thought he was busted. But he heard something unbelievable.
She didn't recognize him. Fweiu actually didn't recognize him.
Shul turned to blatantly stare at Fweiu. This was his sister. His oldest sister. And she didn't remember him. It stung more than Shul could admit to himself, even though he had left that life behind. But had he really left such a small trace of himself?
Shul would have to find out. Time to get nasty.
Shul took a more confident pose, straightened his back and smiled friendily.
"Yes, hello. I do believe we have met. Does a mountain, giant ice spike and me beating you to a pulp ring any bells?"

That wiped the smile off her face real quick. Her reaction came in waves.

First, rage and confusion. Nobody talked to her like that. And the only person to beat her like that was -

"Shul? Is that really you?" She tried to sound happy to see him, but she was miffed. What a terrible impression for him to make, the first words out of his mouth to her after all this time. So out of character, too!

"How did you get here?"

She did remember him. Just a little reminder was needed. Shul did feel bad for rubbing his victory against her face, it's not like he was proud of it, but it was the only weapon that he had right now.
"There you go. Hello Fweiu."
Shul smiled, friendily again.
"Yes, it is really me. In the flesh."
It was somehow refreshing to see Fweiu get flustered. It happened so very rarely.
"As for how I got here, it's not like you forgot my banishment as well, right? I've been keeping busy. I'm a teacher here now."
Shul gestured a bit to his slightly formal wear and now it was his turn to look a bit confused.
"I should ask you what you are doing here."

"You always did like kids."

It made sense that he would be here, now that Fweiu thought about it. If she was being honest, the real reason she didn't think that Shul could be here was that she didn't think about Shul. She tried not to think about Shul.

"Diplomatic work," Fweiu told him. "To keep a long story short, it is getting harder for our clan to hide ourselves from the humans. Making deals with the people here and representatives from other places will help us to stay hidden and to prosper."

She grinned. "That said, perhaps you should be more respectful to me, hatchling. I am chief now. It's not appropriate to talk to me the way you have. In case you forgot." Her tone of voice was playful, teasing. She didn't really want to crack down on the big baby.

Wow, she remembered Shul liked kids. And here he had thought Fweiu had only looked at Shul when she was bullying him. You always learned new things about old acquintances.
Sarcasm once in a while felt good.
When Fweiu explained the situation of the clan Shul felt just a bit smug, and salty. He had seen the clan's future, he had believed assimilation was the right way. Shul had always kept it to himself though, because changing things would've meant him becoming the chief. And that role was not for Shul. Not then, not ever.
But that didn't stop Shul from smiling a little and tilting his head slightly. His tone was innocent, but there was a slight undertone of "I told you so."
"Is that so? I'm sure that is a wise decision. I always thought it would come to that some day."
Fweiu's grin. How many decades had it been since Shul saw that last? He almost wanted to turn his gaze. But instead Shul smirked back and raised his brow.
"If I remember right, I was banished. That means I don't answer to anyone, my dear sister. But congratulations for winning the race. I'm sure brothers and sisters were happy for you too."
Shul left the hatchling comment be. He noticed it didn't touch him anymore, not in the same way it used to do. Now Shul was proud of his dragon form, and how absolutely adorable he looked in it. All fluffy and cuddly. And that was just fine with him.

Shul was denying Fweiu the respect she thought she was due. He was banished and disgraced, yet here he was giving her attitude and expecting to be treated as her equal. Fweiu, the chief of their noble people. She might even call this insolence.

She let out a long sigh. He was banished, but he was family. It made sense that he would resent her, after everything. If she was honest, she resented him too. Beating her, disgracing her, giving up the chiefhood, and then coming here and having the gall to do so well for himself?

No, she should be happy for him, that he did well out here. And she was. But it also pissed her off.

"It... feels like it has been forever since I've seen you, but it was only fifty years." She wanted to say more, but she didn't know what to say. There were so many things she could say or ask about that it paralyzed her.

Shul didn't know whether to be disappointed or relieved when Fweiu didn't start arguing with him. Maybe he was a bit more relieved, since Shul didn't wish conflict, not really. He just wanted to get some of the bitterness out that was left inside him. There was not much, since Shul was not one to carry a grudge. But just carrying the small amount around with him was exhausting sometimes.

Shul kind of understood when Fweiu said what she said, and nothing else. It felt the same to Shul. He had seen and experienced so much during these 50 years and it had felt like several lifetimes. And yet there Fweiu stood, looking exactly same as 50, only 50 years ago. On the day Shul had beaten her. Because she had not been there when Shul had been banished.
Shul smiled gently, a genuine smile, and tilted his head a bit.
"How are father and mother? And sisters and brothers? Are you here alone?"

"Mother is the same as she ever was. And as I'm sure you've guessed, father is... resting and waiting."

They would both know what this meant. He was waiting for the death that came to all of their kind, frozen as solid ice. Fweiu grimaced. She remembered how hard it had been for her to accept this. Surely Shul had known it was coming, too, but maybe not so soon.

"Oh, and Sifa has come to join me. He never grew out of his..." she made a vague gesture with her hand. "Fatigue." It sounded less ignoble than 'laziness.' "I'm hoping that showing him this new place and giving him something with purpose to do will be energizing for him." Maybe it was a silly plan. In dealing with Sifa, she was at a loss.

Shul just nodded when Fweiu told him about mother and father. He had expected that about father. He was already old, he would be joining the ancients soon. But Shul didn't know what to think about it. Of course he was sad, sad that he couldn't truly grieve for his father. Father had always treated Shul like he was nothing, worthless, waste of space. So now Shul couldn't grieve, not with his whole heart. But he did feel sad for how things were, that he couldn't.

Shul scoffed a bit when Fweiu said Sifa was here too. He wasn't surprised Fweiu had at least one of their siblings with her. But Sifa? Really?
"Yeeeeah, fatigue."
Shul laughed, genuinely, and smiled at Fweiu.
"Just call him a lazy ass, 'cos that's what he is. We both know it."
Shul snickered a bit before settling his face into a calm smile, his resting face.
"And I applaud you for still trying to make him shake it off. Even if it's in vain."
