Even gentle Shul was getting on Sifa's case. Halfway across the world, and still she was getting grief for him. "He's still our brother," she snapped. "Even if he disgraces himself."

Fweiu paused after this outburst. Then she sighed. She couldn't force him to stop talking bad about Sifa, and even in another world where Shul was still in the clan, she wouldn't stop him. At least he would have a better idea of where she stood.

Maybe it was time for a lighter line of conversation.

"Anyway. I would worry that you've gotten lonely out here, but I've heard there are other dragons in this place. Do you like any of them?"

When Fweiu briefly snapped at Shul he got surprised for a second, but then he remembered who he was talking to. Fweiu wouldn't be familiar with friendly teasing, or affectionate mocking. It was a thing even Shul had learned after leaving the mountain. Boy, did these dragons really need the outside influence.
"I know very well Sifa is our brother. And Sifa hasn't disgraced himself. He is just Sifa. There will never be anything disgraceful about that."

Shul noted the very clear attempt at changing the conversation and he went along with it. Although he was pretty sure almost anything could become a reason for bickering with Fweiu.
"I haven't actually been lonely even once after I left. The world was, is, full of wonderful people."
Shul smiled, remembering briefly his time on the road.
"And the dragons on this island are kind to me. No one in particular comes to mind, there are so many of them. The Drakenhardts are very friendly. One of them is my fellow colleague."

Fweiu disagreed - Sifa's laziness was a disgrace. But she wasn't going to fight Shul on that.

She supposed humans could make for good company, but it wasn't the same thing to Fweiu. That wasn't the company of equals, the way being with dragons was.

Shul also didn't seem to get what she was trying to ask. "Ok, but... do you like anyone here?" There were other non-dragon non-humans around here, and some of them might even be worth a dragon's time and attention. Romantically speaking.

Shul's eyebrows shot up as he realized what Fweiu was asking. And immediately Sark jumped to his mind, and their time at the beach. Yes, the answer was yes. But Shul knew how Fweiu would think about it. Was he still going to tell her, or hide his relationship with Sark?
The answer was that Shul had nothing to hide, and he certainly was not ashamed of being with Sark. Quite the contrary. Shul was happy, really happy.
So Shul smiled a little and nodded.
"Yes, yes I do. He is a wonderful person, I think you might like him."
Shul looked at Fweiu, little suspicious, and squinted just a bit.
"But why are you interested in that?"

It was another man.

Such things weren't unheard of in their clan. That didn't stop Fweiu from thinking it was weird - especially, in her mind, for someone like Shul. Her confusion was evident on her face. One of the reasons she thought Shul's banishment was so sad was that he liked children so much. He couldn't have children of his own out here.

"It's just one of the first things I thought to ask about. No reason."

Now that she thought of it, there were a lot of questions she could be asking him. Who better to help her make this transition than someone who had been in their clan, and who had already been living in the outside world. Maybe she could ask him to — but he was banished. It would be wrong for her to ask him for help.

An uncomfortably long silence could have passed as she considered this.

Shul could hear, and almost see, the cogs turn in Fweiu's head and that made him chuckle a bit. Shul had kept his sexuality a secret in their community for a good reason. And that reason had been his family. But it felt good to be able to say it, to admit he liked men, Sark, because his family didn't have power over him anymore.
"You aren't interested in details?"
Shul said, teasing Fweiu a bit. It felt fun to be able to do that.

Shul smiled a little, it wasn't a malicious or smug smile. It was just...a smile.
With that smile Shul tilted his head a bit and looked at Fweiu, bit amused.
"I can see you're thinking really hard. You can say whatever you have in mind. I will listen."

Fweiu could go her whole life without hearing the gory details. She thought he could have been talking about sex - those were the kinds of details she used to discuss with her friends back at home, in the context of relationships.

She had something less frivolous to discuss.

"Of all our people, you probably know the most about the outside world. We should make time to sit and talk more about it, sometime." Nobody would know better than him the culture shock they were in for.

Shul was genuinely surprised when Fweiu asked for HIS help. His, who was the fluffball, the hatchling, the black sheep. Fweiu had a great deal of pride. But it seemed like she really wanted to help the clan, if she was willing to ask Shul for help. Shul didn't feel smug about it, or want to poke at Fweiu. He just smiled a little and nodded.
"Okay, sounds good to me. I'll help you. But right now I don't have time. I have work in abooooooout..."
checked his wrist clock.
"20 minutes. Fourth grade history. Today is ancient Greece time and I think they'll like it."
Shul grinned and adjusted the papers in his arms.

"Of course. You have your own duties now."

It still felt strange for Fweiu to work with people who weren't obedient to her. Trying to treat each other as equals. The whole dynamic felt wrong - but she was trying to grow more used to it. As long as the people in the clan didn't get too uppity again, it would be fine.

"How should I contact you, then? It shouldn't all be business. There is a lot that we could catch up on."

They exchanged phone numbers and went their separate ways. Fweiu would take her time deciding how much she cared about Shul's banishment, whether their meetings should be kept a secret from the other ice dragons.
