Sofia's shoulders relaxed a little, she was glad that Riley had decided that she wasn't a creepy adult or anything. That was the last thing that Sofia wanted to be. Just because she enjoyed working with children didn't mean she was creepy. Sofia smiled and handed Riley the smaller of the two bags she carried - being a werewolf also meant extra muscle, even if she looked pretty small and helpless herself.

"So," she began as they started to make their way back to the house, "does the academy have custody of you or something? I assume your parents wouldn't, being in jail and all." She was curious. Sofia had always wanted a child of her own. She missed working with kids, missed her old job and her old life...though this new life didn't give her too much to complain about, if she were being honest.

Riley had a hard time with the bag. Even though the bag was smaller, she was a lot smaller than Sofia. But she wasn't about to give up or ask Sofia to take it back - she offered to carry it, and so she was going to do it.

"Yeah, the Academy has me. If it weren't for them kidnapping me here I'd still be with my family and they wouldn't be in jail. But The school's always right about everything, so I shouldn't complain, and they say my parents are bad people so I guess I shouldn't love them or want to see them, either."

She didn't have the same fire behind this rant that she used to have. She was bitter, defeated. Stealing candy from grocery stores only made her feel a little bit better.

"Kidnapping you, huh?" Sofia mused. She hadn't heard of the academy kidnapping anyone before. She wondered what this girl's story was...perhaps Caius knew? He knew a lot of things that she didn't really understand...especially when it came to the academy. Sofia had already slogged through school, so she didn't really feel the need to go back and do it again. She just needed to find the right fit here...despite the fact that Caius provided for her, she always felt like she should be doing more than just keeping house for him. She needed some kind of job.

"What did your parents get in trouble for, if you don't mind me asking?" Riley certainly was an...interesting child. Perhaps troubled was a correct term to describe her as. Stealing from grocery stores, parents in jail...no real influence in her life, nobody to look up to. She felt pity for the girl.

"Trying to tell normies that supernatural things are real. And they say my parents are terrorists, but I don't think that's right."

Once they made it out of the grocery store parking lot, they had to wait for a light to tell them to cross the street. Riley took this opportunity to lean against a street sign, take some of the weight off. "And you think I'm lying." She sounded annoyed. "They really did kidnap me. Snatched me in my sleep and sent the pigs after my mum and pa."

"Ah," Sofia nodded. "I believe you. That's rough," she told the girl gently. "Coming here wasn't exactly my choice, either, but I wouldn't have been able to live anywhere else. I miss my family, but I can't risk seeing them because of what I am." She watched the light turn to tell them they could cross and kept an eye out for any drivers who weren't paying attention as they made their way across the street.

"I was attacked by a rogue werewolf several months ago," she explained, sharing her own story since Riley had shared hers. "I didn't really get a choice in the matter when I was Changed, it just sort of happened. I was stumbling around in the Canadian wilderness for a long time until Caius found me and brought me here. It's...better than the alternative, learning how to hunt and live as a werewolf rather than running around and uncontrollably killing innocent people." Perhaps that was a little dark, but she had reason to believe that this girl was mature enough to handle such a tale.

Riley kept up with Sofia. She was pretty tired by the time they were done crossing the street, but she still kept up.

Sofia's was another story of someone coming to the island for a good reason. Riley was beginning to accept that those could be a thing. Sofia was hurt by a werewolf, she was a danger to people, and some guy called Caius brought her back to the island so she and the people around her could be safe.

"Sorry about your family," She said. And she meant it, unlike most of the people who apologized about Riley's family. Riley didn't think it was right that a werewolf attacked her and made her a danger to her family. Everyone thought it was right that Riley got taken away from her family, and she resented that.

"Who's Caius? He sounds alright." At least she wasn't taken here by one of the scouts. They were a bunch of fascists.

Sofia shrugged a little, "I miss them, just like you probably miss your parents. Caius is pretty much my family now...I only hope that you can find some people here that will feel like family to you, too. It makes being here a bit easier." It had certainly made her being here easier...if she'd been on her own, she couldn't imagine where she'd be at, especially when it came to controlling her wolf...people probably would have gotten hurt here, too.

She blinked a little, "Caius is the scout that I live with. He found me while I was in Canada, on the verge of starving to death and possibly destroying a small town nearby. It was good that he came when he did, I don't think I could live with myself if I'd hurt anyone." Come to think of it, she didn't know if she'd actually hurt anyone in the first month or so that she'd been a wolf...because it had mostly been a blur with the wolf in control and practically on a rampage. "He's very kind," she added thoughtfully. They were walking up the drive to the house at this point, a little two-story place that was rather isolated, surrounded by a wooded area.

He was a scout? Riley hated him instantly. She felt frustrated at herself for thinking that he was okay, and she was frustrated that this story made a scout look so good and that she listened to it thinking someone good brought Sofia back.

She didn't say anything else. Just frowned and followed and sighed. She knew the scouts were bad, and it was making her angry that people would suggest otherwise. Look what they did to Riley. Look how much they hurt her. Why was everyone on their side?

Riley went quiet, so Sofia did, too. She shifted the paper bag onto her hip again and pulled a key from her pocket to let them into the house. "I bet you're hungry. You're not allergic to peanut butter, are you?" Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches were pretty easy and filling, though she tended to require about seven or eight of them to be full with her metabolism the way it was.

Sofia led the way into the kitchen and set her bag on the counter next to the fridge and began to unpack the groceries, putting them away either in the pantry or the fridge, depending on what the item was. She left the items to make the sandwiches on the counter and busied herself with making them. "How long have you been on the island?" she asked absently, just trying to make conversation from the tense silence that had befallen them. It was pretty clear that Riley didn't like the scouts.

"Peanut butter is fine." Riley set the grocery bag on the counter, then sat down, sweaty and exhausted from the heat and the effort.

"I've been here for over a year I think," she told her. "I had to spend most of that in jail." As soon as she said it, she knew she was going to have to explain herself, so she continued. "When I got here I was mad because I wanted to go home and see my parents. I tried to run away and I sent some people to the hospital and destroyed half a building."

She was a little bit proud of herself for being able to cause so much trouble, but remembering also made her sad. After that triumph came the sadness, the anger, the constant postponement of letting her leave juvie because of constant bad behavior until she lost hope and gave up on the idea of someone coming to bust her out. It was only supposed to be a couple of months that she would spend there, originally.
