With a basket hooked over her arm, Sofia wandered through the aisles of the grocery store, occasionally picking things out to place into the basket. She didn't need much, but small and frequent trips to the store prevented her from having to haul large amounts of groceries back home...not that she couldn't handle large amounts of groceries, after all, her werewolf strength gave her more than enough muscle to do so, but she preferred the small trips anyways. It gave her more to do during the week.

Caius was away again. He'd been called off on another mission. He'd only been home for a short time this time...she hoped that soon he would be able to stay for longer. It was starting to become less and less of a mystery that Sofia was rather fond of Caius. She enjoyed taking care of the older man. He was more expressive around her lately, and he cared for her and taught her everything she knew about the lycan world. He was kind, and gentle, despite his tough exterior. She thought about him often while he was away...always wondering when he would come back home to her.

Sofia wandered through the produce section and picked up an avocado, gently squeezing it. She'd been trying to eat more fruits and vegetables lately, since mostly all the wolf craved was meat, meat, and more meat. Heavy foods. Her metabolism worked so fast, she had a hard time keeping up with it. She still wasn't used to how much she ended up eating nowadays. Sofia shrugged and set a few more items in her basket before heading towards checkout. That was enough for today.

Riley was a girl on a mission: she was going to get some candy from the grocery store. And she didn't have much money of her own - her allowance was pretty small living with the school as her legal guardian - so she didn't intend to pay for any candy.

There were a bunch of words Riley's parents would use for the people on this island, she was sure: capitalists, imperialists, fascists. Stuff like that. These were bad people. They took Riley away from her parents. It was totally morally okay to steal from them, because they were jerks and she hated them.

This wasn't the first time Riley had stolen candy. She had the idea in her head that a grocery store would be a better place to hit than a convenience store, because there's all kinds of stuff going on at a grocery store so it's easy to overlook a girl pocketing some candy and leaving. There aren't that many people at a convenience store, so it's harder to get away with stuff there. So far, it seemed to be working out for her.

Today, it definitely didn't. Someone who worked for security stopped her at the entrance, asking her if she was going to pay for those candy bars in her pockets.

"What are you talking about? Lemme go!" She was causing a scene now, trying to squirm out of the security guard's grasp and get away from him.

As she set the items onto the checkout counter, A small commotion nearby drew Sofia's attention. She glanced over and saw a young girl being held by a security guard as he demanded to know if she was going to pay for some stolen candy. Sofia hesitated for a moment before making a quick decision and rushing over to intervene.

"There you are," she spoke to the girl in motherly tones. "What did I tell you about wandering off? Come on, go put your candy on the counter over there." She gently took the girl's other arm. "I'm sorry, sir. She wandered off for a moment while I wasn't looking. It won't happen again, I promise." The security guard looked at her suspiciously before slowly letting go of the child. "Thank you so much for catching her, I can't imagine what would have happened if she'd run out of here without me." She smiled endearingly at the girl, "Let's go pay for your things so we can go home." She hoped that the girl would realize what Sofia was doing for her and just play along...otherwise things were going to look even more strange.

Riley had been spending part of the afternoon following people around, so that she could be mistaken for someone's kid. She was ready to play the part - but she hesitated. Why was this lady covering for her? Was she confused? Did she actually think Riley was her kid?

"O-okay."

The girl did as she was told and put the candy bars on the checkout counter. She didn't trust this situation, but she would play along for now.

Sofia led the girl back to the counter and paid for her candy, along with the small amount of groceries she'd purchased for the house. Hopefully Caius wouldn't mind the extra few dollars that was going on his credit card...he was the one with all the money. Perhaps she should get a job to help out a bit more...sometimes she felt like just keeping house for him wasn't really enough.

She headed out of the grocery store with the child at her side and turned to her, holding out the bag that the candy had been put in. "Next time, don't get caught, okay? Where are your parents, anyways? You didn't come here alone, did you?" Sofia's questions were gentle. She'd spent a lot of time working with kids when she was a social worker. She liked kids. The mischievous ones were her favorites, to be honest. She'd been like that, too, growing up.

Riley just stared at the bag for a second before digging her candy out.

"My parents are in jail. I snuck out of the Academy to get here." She felt comfortable saying that last bit to this lady - if she was going to cover for Riley stealing, she would probably cover for Riley running away from school to do it, too. At the very least she probably wouldn't snitch on Riley.

"Why are you helping me?" Conscious of the fact that she was wearing a power nullifying bracelet, Riley tried to hide it behind her back, hoping Sofia wouldn't notice it.

Sofia watched the girl with raised eyebrows. The Academy? So she was a student. A shame that her parents were in jail...that would have meant that they didn't have legal custody over her. She wondered if the Academy was acting as her legal guardian...this girl certainly didn't look eighteen to her.

She shrugged at the girl's question, "Call it...a random act of kindness. I used to be a social worker before I came here, I can't really stand to see kids in trouble and do nothing." She sighed, "You should be getting back to school. It's not good for kids your age to be wandering around the city alone." She shouldn't just leave the girl to walk all the way back by herself. "I can walk with you," she offered. It wouldn't rest well on her consciousness if she'd just let the girl go on her own...someone might snatch her.

"Yeah but you have all those groceries to carry. You'd have to take them all the way to the school, and then back to your home. It's a ten minute bus ride and it's hot. Your food would go bad."

Riley thought she was too smart to get snatched. Plus, her destiny was too big and important for her to get snatched. She didn't think Sofia was going to try to snatch her, at least not anymore - she was offering to walk Riley straight back to the school after all.

She also didn't want to go back to the school yet. Normally she would be upset with Sofia for telling her she shouldn't be out here, but given the circumstances she would let that slide without comment.

Sofia furrowed her brow lightly and looked at the paper bag that was now propped up against her hip. The girl had a point, she did have some perishable items that needed to get into the fridge before too long. She glanced up at the sky. It was bright, with the sun streaming down in warm rays...though Sofia's body temperature usually ran warm, anyways, so it didn't make a huge difference to her; she was used to it.

"Okay, hm...well," she mused, "I don't live too far from here. I don't want to seem creepy or anything, but you're welcome to come along with me if you'd like? I could make you some lunch," she offered to the girl. "I'm Sofia, by the way. Sofia North. I live with one of the academy's scouts." Caius was a good man to take her like he'd done. She wasn't sure if that fact would give her much credibility in this sense, but it just didn't seem right to have this girl go around all by herself. Especially with the not-too-distant kidnappings that she'd read about in the papers, and with no parents to escort her, either. She supposed it was her natural instincts to protect children, combined with her previous work experience, that was causing her to have this kind of reaction.

Riley made a face for a moment, when she heard Sofia was living with a scout. Riley still hated them. But that seemed like a reason to come along - maybe she could trash some of his stuff. And Sofia said she'd make Riley lunch; free food was good. Plus, Riley would get to stay away from the school for longer.

After a few moments of consideration, she made her decision.

"Ok. I don't think you'll snatch me. I'm Riley K. Want me to carry one of the bags?"
