There's a song playing inside of my soul...

Kaydence walked down one of the halls. He'd been at Starlight for a few days, and he thought it was about time to explore and get the feel of things. He figured that even though he and his sister would probably have to leave soon, it would be good to know the territory.

He passed the music room. The door was open. He saw a grand piano sitting there. He hadn't played in a long time, not since before the fire. He ambled in and sat down.

He layed his fingers on the ivory keys, unsure of himself. But the notes just came to him naturally. As he played, he realized just how much he'd missed being able to play the piano. But there was never one available, and never the time, when he and Kamberlyn had been on the run.

"There's a song that plays inside of my soul...
It's the one that I've tried to write over and over again
I'm awake in the infinite cold
But you sing to me over and over and over again...

He sang softly so that no one would hear him. He would generally not have sang at all, but it had been such a long time since he'd been able to play or sing, that he forgot his unwillingness to do so. He just let the music take over.

Becky was walking through the hall that passed the music room. Her hands were jammed in the pockets of her black jeans and she was taking her time, obviosusly in no hurry to get anywhere. Becky'd been there only a little while and knew no one, so therefore she had no where to go but to her dorm.

A deep sigh escaped her lips at her thoughts and a depressed frown chased her usual smile away. It deepened when she heard piano music She hadn't thought anyone was there...

Becky silently stepped into the room. A boy was sitting at the piano, his soft voice barely heard over the lovely playing. The girl made her way over, not saying anything so she wouldn't startlle him from his playing. She wasn't sure if he'd noticed her yet or not, but Becky leaned against the back of the piano, her smile returning but only sllightly.

"So I lay my head back down
And I lift my hands and pray
To be only yours
I pray
To be only yours
I know now you're my on-ly hope...

Kaydence saw the girl. He tried to keep going on to the next verse, but he was thrown off balance. He hit the wrong key, his voice cracked, and he stopped altogether, suddenly remembering why he never sang.

He stood up and walked over to her, his arms folded. "Do you always sneak up on people?" He asked, his voice a little sadistic, but warmer than usual.

Becky's face flushed. "I ah, don't normally make a habit of it. No." Her grin spread into a sheepish smile. "You were doing pretty good actually. Unitil ya decided to go off-key." She kept smiling to show she was teasing.

Becky looked at him for a second, wondering if it would be weird to introduce herself. Finally deciding against it, the girl sat on the piano bench. "Wish I could play that good." She lightly touched the keys but didn't try to play them.

Kaydence couldn't hold back an ebarrassed smile. When she sat down he walked back to the front of the piano. "I could teach you...if you wanted me to...I guess..." He said quietly.

He didn't know why he'd said that, but he didn't see any harm in just teaching her. For some reason, he trusted her already. He thought he had a sixth sense about that sort of thing, but he could have been wrong.

"You would?" Becky's eyes held surpirse. "I mean...sure. I'd like that but I don't wanna take up your time...or anything." She lowered her gaze and quickly stuffed her hands into her pockets again, standing as she did.

"I have time to kill." The words were out before Kaydence could stop them. He shrugged inwardly. The girl didn't really look like she could be an assassin. She was too small. "I'm...uh...Kaydence."

Becky shifted uncomfortably at the word 'kill'. Seemed every little thing lately reminded Becky of her past.

"I'm Becky." She said somewhat shyly at his introduction. "And thanks for offering to teach me..." Becky took a step back from Kaydence.

Kaydence noted her uncomfortableness. He couldn't tell if it was because of her shyness or something else. But he made a mental note of it.

"Yeah, it's no problem. So...uh, do you know the notes?" He asked.

"Yeah. Kinda." Becky nodded. She looked at him for a moment then quickly looked back at the floor. She supposed she should sit back down...but she was feeling tense all of the sudden. Becky had a bad habit of making hersef nervous when there was no reaosn to be.
