It was a quieter day at The Training Room, leaving Ashton with little to do. He had already done all the cleaning he could, and there were no clients that he had to run the machinery for. There was nothing to fix, either. Ashton wouldn’t complain though, because it gave him extra time for his studies, and being a Physics major—he needed all the time he could get.

“…if I represents the total intensity of the electromagnetic radiation at all wavelengths, then that intensity over an interval δλ (between the limits of λ and δ&lamba;) is: δI = R(λ) δλ…” Ashton murmured to himself as he took notes from his physics text. Blackbody Radiation was the current subject he had his full attention on.

Since he was alone in the Training Room, he decided to summon one of his creatures to keep him company as he studied. Kerberos, the small Cerberus hound no bigger than a Pomeranian, was idly chewing on three chew toys in his three mouths underneath the desk. Once in a while, he’d give the little beast a rub on the back with his foot—making Kerberos grunt and roll around the floor.

“…A blackbody allows all incident radiation to pass into it (no reflected energy) and internally absorbs all the incident radiation (no energy transmitted through the body). This is true for radiation of all wavelengths and for all angles of incidence. Hence the blackbody is a perfect absorber for all incident radiation…”

Ashton glanced up to give his eyes a break from all the reading he had been doing. “A shame we cannot really perform experiments on Black Holes. They are the perfect Black Body.” Ashton murmured—somewhat talking to Kerberos, but mostly to himself.

“Is that what it’s like for you to be summoned? Being pulled through a Black Hole? I wonder…” Ashton reached down and scratched Kerberos on the back. Kerberos grunted and rolled on his back.

“I often wonder what it would be like on the event horizon of a Black Hole. What would happen to the human body…” Ashton lifted himself back up with a sigh, and resumed studying.

After the fifth time of Spirit dragging him into to the room with his teeth , and Warrior carrying him over the steps like a rag doll, William had stopped complaining about coming to the training room. Actually, if anything, he had learned to like it over the last few weeks.

I want to kill something big today. he said, jumping into the holographic room. I wonder if there is something similar to the that thing we fought last week... he said, shifting through the holographic levels as if they were displayed on his computer at home. He grew somewhat accustomed to the server, or at least the part of it that was made to fit customer's needs.

No, no, no, no, no....Hmmm, no. Not this one either. Fought that one the second time.... No, no. oh, look at this! he said, smiling at the picture of of a monster with at least a thousand eyes. This should be it. he said, pressing the small green 'play' button in the corner. The program started running, and then...

Sequence interrupted. Sequence interrupted. You do not have the permission to run this scene.

Huh? You need a permission?

Ashton had seen William and Spirit come in—the two were starting to become regulars. Ashton had not interacted with them too much however, besides the usual greeting and farewells he was obligated to give. They usually did not need assistance with the machines.

As he was studying, however, he overheard the two trying to access a locked scenario. He got out of his desk chair and entered the holographic room to investigate.

“What scenario are you trying to access? Ah…give me a moment.” Ashton prompted an admin window to appear on the console, and he temporarily unlocked the scenario along with a few others. “We keep some of the more difficult scenarios locked so we don’t have newbies trying to bite off more than they can chew. Throwing someone into a difficult scenario with no previous holographic training can have…bad consequences.”

Ashton hit a button, and it was back to the regular screen—now with some of the more difficult scenarios unlocked. “You’re here all the time, so I’m sure you can handle these.”

Just then, little Kerberos bounded into the room and started barking at Spirit. Ashton was more embarrassed than anything.

“Kerberos, no!” he said as he quickly scooped up the little hell hound in his arms. “S-sorry,” he said simply to William and Spirit before rushing back over to his desk.

Was that....a really small three headed dog? he said, turning his head towards Spirit and Warrior. Because it would be really strange if it was not.

Spirit snorted at him, waving his tail over the ground, something he always did when amused. In what way? he asked, bearing his teeth in a wolf version of a smile. You have already gone crazy. William frowned, opening his mouth to bite back, only to Warrior's hand on his shoulder.

You are teasing the boy too much, Spirit. he said, looking sternly at both of them. Somehow, the slow silver glitter of those eyes always made them feel ashamed.

Uh, yeah, sorry... for some reason, it was William who apologized to Warrior, while Spirit only nudged at the boy's hand as a peace offering.

And yeah, that was a small three headed dog. Warrior confirmed, looking at the door through which the guy who had unlocked the more dangerous levels had disappeared through.

Cool. William said, turning to the board. Now that the security lock has been lifted, he found at least a dozen more levels waiting for him as he went through the list.

I'm gonna need help with this. he said in the end, grudgingly admitting defeat. The new levels had different way of displaying stats, and except the one with the monster-of-thousand-eyes there was no picture supplied to any of them, and while he was crazy, he wasn't crazy enough to go in blind.

I do believe that is why they have hired the boy. Spirit said, pointing his head to the door.

Well, aren't you a know it all... William rolled his eyes, before knocking at the door to Ashton's office. Hi, I need help with some of the levels. he said, leaning against them.

Ah, damnit. Ashton was so distracted by Kerberos that he had forgotten to explain how the harder levels in the holographic room worked.

“Kerberos, you’re staying right here, alright?” Ashton told his little beast as he placed him on the ground. Then he hurried out to assist William again—quickly closing the door behind him. Kerberos could be heard barking on the other side. Ashton just tried to pretend he didn’t hear anything.

“I’m sorry about that. Let me explain the harder levels…” Ashton said as he made his way back to the holographic room. Man, even from that room, he could hear Kerberos’ barking. Why was such a tiny hell hound so damn loud?

“So, if you press down and hold on these untitled stats—you’ll get a short description of each,” Ashton explained, demonstrating on a random stat. “These more challenging levels allow you more control over the monster’s stats—but there is a limit. For example…”

Ashton pressed down on a stat related to the creature’s physical strength and lowered it considerably. “See how when I lowered the physical strength, the speed and intelligence levels of the monster rose? This allows you to change up what exactly makes the monster a challenge.”

Ashton pressed a ‘default’ button on the left right corner of the screen, which made the stats go back to how they were originally.

“Just mess around with the stats a bit and you’ll get the hang of them in no time.” He stepped back from the panel and glanced over at William. “Um…is there anything else you need help with?” he asked, pushing up his glasses.

Why are there no pictures from the screenplay? he asked curiously, watching the different stats rise and fall as he messed with them absently. He wasn't actually doing anything but getting used to the new system. He could pick a level later.

And, also... he said, turning his head towards the door and barking coming from behind it. You can let him go, you know? he turned towards Ashton again. I don't mind, and neither does Spirit, right? this time, his head went towards the wolf, and he felt like he was getting dizzy from all head turning, so he just focused on the screen after it.

I do not. the wolf said, sitting down by the panel so he could watch William mess with the stats. As long as he doesn't bite me. the wolf huffed, and William laughed.

Even if he did bite you, Spirit, I doubt you would even feel it. he said, patting the wolf's head. It has three layers of fur to go through before it could ever reach your skin.

And that's why I wouldn't mind it much even if he did. But I would mind.

“Oh, actually...” Ashton gestures to the lower right hand corner. “See that button? It will bring up a menu, and from there you can access screenplay examples. The harder scenarios just have slightly more complicated menus--but you’ll get the hang of it soon enough.”

Ashton stiffened when he was told he could let Kerberos run around free. Why? This guy obviously had a summoning power much like his own--but he had an impressive wolf and powerful warrior at his side. Did they want to make fun of the fact that one of his summons basically amounted to a three-headed Chihuahua?

“Um...no...he should just stay in there...” Ashton murmured, avoiding eye contact. “He’ll just be a nuisance. So, um, do you need help with anything else?” he asked, quickly changing the subject.

Great., he said, punching the button immediately, and letting the screenplay of the first level roll before him. It looked wicked as hell and he couldn't wait to try it. He grinned, looking down at Spirit like a child on Christmas morning, only to receive an amused huff in return.

Believe, he could never be as much nuisance as this idiot here. the wolf said, rolling his eyes, and lying his head down just in time to avoid William's punch.

Hey, are you comparing it to a Cerberus there? Because the last time I checked, I did not have three heads.

Looking up at him from the floor, the wolf huffed again. With the ego you have, you might as well. he said, bearing his teeth in a strange version of a wolf-grin.

Looking at him, William sighed, before bursting out in laughter. You're an idiot. he said to the wolf, before turning his head towards Ashton. If everything yours does is bark, you're lucky. he said, although he was still grinning.

Ashton actually laughed a little when the Spirit and William were teasing each other. Ashton had yet to summon any sort of creature that could actually speak to him. He wondered if he’d have that kind of relationship with any of his creatures at some point. Right now they were more like little pets than real companions.

“Well...alright. I guess I can let him out.” Ashton said, feeling a little more confident. These guys didn’t seem so bad, right? He went over and opened the office door, letting Kerberos run out. Immediately the little hound dashed to Spirit and started sniffing at his paw. Then he was sniffing at William’s feet, and Warrior’s as well.

Ashton watched his behavior for a moment, scratching at the back of his head. “I think he’s just...intrigued by you, I guess.”

It's okay. William said, crouching, so he could try and pet one of the three small heads. He doesn't bite, does he? he asked, suddenly retreating his hand.

Considering how many bites that hand has already received Warrior, surprisingly, after his previous lecture to them both, spoke I don't think it would bother you at all. he said, looking at William shake his hand, remembering all the bites Spirit has landed there, especially since arriving on the island.

It would still hurt, though. he said, still bravely giving his hand back to the small creature to play with. Just not as much as it ought to.
