Chris stood awkwardly in the street, self-consciously patting his hair. Random passers-by began to look at him curiously, and not without a hint of suspicion.
Oops! He edged into a side alley, made sure no-one was looking, and concentrated.
Mirror. Instantly a small hand mirror appeared. He held it up and examined his hair from every angle for about the thousandth time since he'd left the barber's.
He'd gone to his cousin Aaron, who worked there, just for a chat and maybe to get his hair trimmed. Instead Aaron had practically thrown him into a chair and started chopping. "Wha!?" Chris had stuttered.
"It's a shambles! Look at the colour. It's all wrong! And you most definitely suit longer hair, my friend.."
After an hour, he was finally done. "It's on the house!" Aaron yelled after him.
Gee, thanks, Chris thought sarcastically, taking yet another look at himself. Was his hair too long? Too short? Did it stick up in too many directions? Was it the wrong colour? Black had been cool, but this dark brown wasn't all that bad either....
And the new jacket didn't exactly make him look like the fashion police were out to get him. Chris surveyed the pale green parka he was wearing and smiled for the first time that day. Maybe this 'new Chris' wasn't as bad as he'd first expected.
