Leaving her brothers behind had been one of the most difficult decisions Anna had made in her life. They would be okay, or at least, that's what she kept reminding herself. They were both in high school now, and the foster family they'd been with for the past two years was getting ready to adopt them both. Things would be fine. They could video chat with each other and stay in contact and that was going to have to be good enough for them all, because this was Anna's life now.

Special...

Anna had never really known exactly what she was until recently. She'd had these powers and abilities for her whole life, and had only just found out that she'd been born a siren and had these powers and...all that. It was new to her, and she'd only just been experimenting with what she could do within the past couple of months. She refused to let herself believe that her music had been tainted by her powers - she'd always loved music, and just because it seemed to fascinate other people in a mysterious way didn't mean it was bad.

She let herself into the massive ballroom and moved quietly to the grand piano that was kept in the corner of the room. This had been her escape from the world for the past couple of days. Music that came straight from the soul. Brushing her fingers over the ivory keys, Anna sat down on the piano bench and, with a deep breath, began to play. Classical pieces were always a preference - they were so beautiful and complicated and long, and she could just play them for hours on end. The music that she pulled from the keys lifted and filled the room, and she immersed herself in it.

James slipped through the halls, the Shadow was asleep in the back of his mind. It was a normal day, or at least as normal as a day on a magic island could be.

His unique gray-silver eyes looked to a room as he was about to pass it, he heard music, the piano to be exact. James had a natural curiosity for new things, a desire to learn, this was no different.

He skipped into the room, looking it over quickly. Now most would call James could looking, his face was cute or handsome by most standards and sense arriving he'd put on quite a bit of muscle.

His eyes finally landed on the source of the music, a girl, probably a few years older, playing the piano. James gave a small shy smile, "s-sorry, didn't mean to interrupt."

Anna had been so lost in the keys that she hadn't even noticed the boy's entrance until he said something. Her fingers kept dancing across the piano as she looked up at him. It wasn't uncommon, she'd learned, that the music she made would draw people in, but she hadn't quite figured out why just yet. It was probably something to do with the siren thing that she was supposed to be. Maybe she should research it? There had to be some kind of...book in the library or something like that. Anna stored that thought for later.

She returned his smile with her own, "No worries." She plucked out an improvised bridge and settled into a short Mozart piece, playing for a bit longer before she let the last chord hang in the air and then fade away. After a moment, she turned her body on the piano bench to face the boy and held out a friendly hand, "I'm Anna. I just got here about a week ago."

He continued smiling shyly, tilting his head as he listened to her play. James viewed himself as talentless, he could pick locks, pickpocket people and was agile as hell but he didn't really view those as talents, "wow.....you're really good."

He shook her hand gently, he didn't usually like touching people he didn't know well, but she seemed friendly. "I'm James, call me Jim if you want," hid gray-silver eyes shined a bit, he'd slowly adopted to being more social, he'd struggled at times, but he was getting there, "it's good to meet you. Welcome to Manta Carlos."

His smile brightened, "sorry again about popping up, I heard the music, thought I'd come see," his curiosity had maybe gotten the better of him.

A little tickle of strange, happy energy was felt as the two joined hands for a brief moment, and then it disappeared. Anna raised an eyebrow. Weird...that had never happened before. Maybe it was just her imagination. Shaking it off, she listened politely and smiled as the boy welcomed her to her new home. She'd gotten plenty of welcomes from the staff, but this was really the first fellow academy student that she'd met, though he seemed to be a little young. High school, maybe? He reminded her of the older of her two younger brothers - they were almost the same age, if she were to give a guess.

"Thank you. And it's no problem. I love to share my music," she replied with an equally bright smile. "If you don't mind my asking, are you in high school? I just enrolled in the college program."

She seemed nice, James wasn't overly social, though he had improved recently, "yea I'm a sophomore." He hadn't talked to many college students, "I arrived back in September."

The Shadow stirred slightly in the back of his mind, the entity was currently asleep. "The island is... quite the place," he said with a small chuckle. "You'll see a lot of interesting things," he continued to smile, feeling a ping of extra happiness as they shook hands.

As he talked, a small shadow tentacle appeared on his shoulder and swayed slowly back and forth, it was an odd thing that happened with his powers occasionally, normally when he was calm.

September. So he'd almost been here for a whole year. Anna wondered how many students had been here for longer periods of time? According to her little welcome packet, this island had been around for a while, so it probably wasn't unlikely to find generations of...well, special folk here. A whole community of them. It was still so weird to think that there were that many people here that were all like her. Well, different, but...not human was what she meant, she supposed.

Anna's eyes were drawn to the little waving shadow on his shoulder. "Who's your friend?" she asked, leaning closer and reaching a finger out towards it. She wasn't sure what exactly it was. It wasn't an animal or anything. It looked pretty much like a shadowy...thing. Funny, how he'd just been saying there were interesting things on this island and here was one now, as if on command.

"Oh sorry," he said slightly embarrassed, "that's my shadow magic," focusing he made it vanish. "That's one of the ways it manifests."

He cleared his throat, "it's a weird power," it was always a pain trying to explain his powers. "It comes from an entity that...sorta latched onto me," the Shadow grumbled in the back of his mind, having some strange dream.

James shifted his feet a bit, uncertain how she was going to react, newcomers often get scared at the fact that he was sharing his body with a shadow monster.

He seemed embarrassed, but Anna was clearly fascinated, listening intently. "Cool! Like a ghost? Can you talk to them? What do they say? Have you met any that are like...victims of a mysterious murder plot?"

Her words came out rapidly, as though being fired from a gun. She bounced lightly up and down on her toes, obviously eager to know what his experiences with ghosts were. Anna loved ghost stories. When she was very young, her parents had taken her on one of those cheesy around-town ghost tours, and she'd loved every second of it. It was one of the only memories she had left of her parents.

He blinked in surprise and then laughed a bit, he couldn't help but find her curiosity and energy adorable. "He's not a ghost no," he tilted his head curiously, "there not exactly sure what he is."

Focusing he made two shadow portals, pulling his keys from his pocket he tossed them into one. They started going through the portals, from one to the other. "It grants me shadow magic, I can use it in different ways, like these portals."

"And yea...he talks to me," he chuckled a bit and looked to the older girl. Normally James pretty shy and quiet, but he was enjoying talking to this girl. "He used to be an ass, but he's calmed down sense then," he grinned a tiny bit.

A thought crossed his mind, digging in his bag, he pulled out a wooden dove he'd carved, "been making statues recently, here, you can have this."
