"Can you hear me?
Voice resounding
Calling over the flow of time...

Heed my cry, and know that I
Want you to return..."

The wind blew coolly across Yuki's skin as the remnants of winter cold fluttered in the breeze, still dominant enough to shadow the warmth that spring promised. He felt the power course through his veins, that familiar feeling of invoking some higher power as his voice carried clearly across the lake, free of meekness as the animals heeded his call, slowly gathering to watch as the last threads of sunset glistened on the water's surface.
It was a small comfort, knowing that even when things were at their bleakest Yuki could rely on music. The lyrics that bubbled up to the surface of his mind to invoke the gathering hadn't made much sense, but he knew that the words didn't always have to - as long as they were poetic in nature, he knew that they would take effect.

Although sometimes he simply didn't have muse, which made things difficult. But today he seemed to be in top form - good. He didn't feel comfortable about doing these checkups where Ace and Mahalia could hear. It was awkward, the idea of them accidentally being enthralled by his magic. But it felt good to do, nonetheless - whenever he sang like this, he could feel his entire being pulse with delight. He rubbed the pendant on his neck, feeling the warmth of the heated metal as the crystal glowed softly, its blue light resonating in the metal casing. It never failed to impress the boy with its beauty.

After school Jae retreated to the school lake for respite. He left his school bag hidden in some reeds and walked into the cold water. Jae shivered for only a moment, until he was deep enough to shift and dive deeper. The cold hardly registered in his mer form and the teen swam to the bottom of the lake and settled against the rocks there. There, Jae let himself rest, soak in the gentle ambiance of the lake bed and feel swarms of fish explore the sudden visitor.

Eventually, Jae knew he must return home. Still, the teen swam sedately to the surface, and through the water heard a voice. Like a fish caught on a hook, Jae drifted towards the source, and distantly felt as though it were familiar. Though, Jae could hardly think of how as he moved forward. The teen surfaced a few feet from the shore, and pulled himself onto the sandy shore to better listen.

Yuki sang, an assortment of animals gathered around him. Then Jae realized why this was so familiar, it was like his siren song. Only Yuki looked so happy to sing, like it brought him joy. Jealousy shot through Jae. His own song scratched at the back of his throat, his magic enticed by Yuki's song. He couldn't help himself and began to hum along. Matching Yuki's melody and returning the sentiment.

Yuki continued the song, melody swirling and swelling as the supernatural fauna gathered to be around him, joining his audience and resting enthralled, hanging on his every note. Eventually the song faded from his mind, the bubbles having popped. He felt the power recede, and he watched with a wistful gaze as most of the animals faded into obscurity once more. He'd meet them again next time. As for the ones that were left? They seemed comfortable enough around him. He supposed he didn't exactly have a predatory aura, so it was unsurprising.

Except he realised he'd attracted a merman. Oh, wow. That was...quite the honour, actually. That a merman had heard his song and had liked it enough to draw nearer to him. They were beautiful...pale, pearly skin and lustrous red hair, as though adorned with the evening sunlight itself. Except... was that face familiar? He thought he'd seen it before. He remembered the face but not the name, so all he could say in reponse was...

"...Hi."

The song faded, and slowly Jae came back to himself. The mer teen stared back at Yuki, wide-eyed and embarrassed. His cheeks flushed pink. "H-hi." He answered, and immediately felt lame for the weak reply. Jae's tail flicked back and forth, frothing the shallow water of the shore. He supposed it was ironic to finally be the one caught in another person's song. "Um. . . I-I, I didn't know you could sing like that." He said, tone bordering on something like awe.

What was Yuki's secret? To be able to sing that kind of song and feel happy about it. Whatever it was, Jae desperately wanted to know. It made him bolder. "I can sing like that too." He admitted, though couldn't meet Yuki's eye as he spoke. "You, um, you sounded great. Amazing." Some of the animals Yuki called even stayed!

Yuki watched the merman's tail swish in the water, sending small sparkly droplets across the surface of the lake with almost a magical glow. It was hard to not feel insignificant in the presence of such majesty. "I...can," he replied shyly, an awkward smile painting his features as he slowly began to approach. It was fine to get closer, right? They'd met before, so it would probably be okay. He felt eyebrows pull together a bit at the sense of... he couldn't place it. Almost as if his acquaintance was...admiring him?

But that didn't make sense. "I, um, I wasn't aware I had an audience," he began as he took a seat on the dock and let his feet dangle over the water. Its presence was always soothing somehow, and he felt drawn to it. Especially at times like this, when twilight was beginning to settle and the day entered one of its most magical phases. It was probably what kept him from clamming up.

"Do you come here often?"

"I didn't mean to intrude," Jae said. He watched as Yuki settled onto the dock, his legs over the water. The merman pushed himself back, deeper into the water so he wasn't half beached on the shore. "Um, I don't usually come to the lake." He said, and turned to watch the sunset with his new companion. "I usually go to the ocean." But he needed the comfort of water and the lake was closer. Jae rephrased it as, "I missed being in the water, so I came here as it's closer to the school."

"Um," he looked to Yuki, "Do you come to the lake often to sing?" If Jae concentrated, he could hear the echo of that song in the back of his head. Could he ever sing like that? Carefree and happy? The only time he liked singing was when he used his voice to control water.

"Ah." He nodded at the explanation. He didn't relate but that made sense, he supposed. Mermaid. Merman. Thing. Water. Scales. Reminded him of an anime he'd watched before - the lull of the sea or something.

"I...do. I have to check my powers still work every once in a while. Want to see the other thing I can do?" He said, and then shouted across the surface of the lake, aiming at bunch of reeds. He held a hand towards them (even though he didn't need to, but it helped him illustrate his point and looked cooler) as they all fell, stems snapped as the solid, strengthened soundwaves crashed into them.

He drew a hand to his forehead, the familiar headache there to greet him. "...yeah, they're still working." He grinned sheepishly.

The other thing he could do? Jae watched Yuki, curious as to what else he could do with his voice. He flinched as Yuki shouted, and followed the motion of his hand towards the reeds. The plants snapped in half, broken by the sound wave. It was amazing! Was it something Yuki could always do? Or was it something he learned through practice?

"That was awesome, I had no idea you had voice powers." Jae studied the reeds for a moment, and it gave him an idea. "W-we could practice together!" He blurted, before he could lose his burst of confidence. "I-I want to learn how to use my voice and magic to control water. I've made a start! But maybe you could help me improve.

"Ah! If you'd like that is." Jae ducked his head, embarrassed by his outburst. He couldn't help his excitement however. He's learned to use his magic for something good, how could he not jump on any chance to learn more? Even if their powers were different, Jae needed more singing experience.

"Ah, um..." He blinked. Okay. Well, this was quite the turn of events. "Right. So, erm... you want to learn how to use your voice. Have you, erm, did you want singing lessons from me, or...?" He furrowed his brows confusedly. "I'll admit that I'm not the best of singing teachers, but I, erm. I could try. And I don't see how I could, well. How I could be useful in your, erm, water voice powers. Are you, er, like a real life Azura or something?" He laughed and twiddled with his thumbs.

"Never mind. I doubt you'd get the reference." He smiled with a hint of grimace.

"Ah, I mean, it would be nice to have someone to practice with." Jae said. To get singing lessons hadn't occurred to him before now, as his singing was very personal. Jae treated his voice as something to hide away and pretend he didn't have because of the magic that influenced it. Now that he could sing to control water . . . "I'm sorry, if I'm making you uncomfortable," He added, mistaking Yuki's confusion for hesitance.

Jae did not get the reference, "A real life Azura?" He repeated, thinking Yuki was referring to some pop culture figure. It was a good change of topic, as Jae felt he overstepped by asking Yuki practice singing with him.
