Yuki blinked. "Ah, um..." This was awkward. Perhaps it was time for him to leave. "It's um, a reference to a game character. She-- er, she controls water with her voice somehow. Honestly, it's kind of just a deux ex machina so I suppose it's not really good writing, but it's cool anyway. I kind of wish I had some magical song that could do all of that." He scratched his head.

"So, erm. That's all. I, um, you have my number? If you wanted to practice, I could, er, meet with you sometime. Did you want to show me your, er — what you can do?" He paused, then added "as in, right now?"

Oh, a videogame character. Jae made a mental note to look her up later. Videogames never really interested him, but it was worth a look at. He listened as Yuki described the character, and nodded along. Then Yuki asked if Jae had his number and the teen paused, "Ah, I don't think so?" Jae's swim bag, which held his phone, was further down the beach. "I can get my phone in a second."

First, Yuki asked to see what Jae could do and he found himself eager to share. "Yeah, um, just let me. . ." Jae twisted around in the water to face towards the lake. He took a deep breath, then began to sing a long, continuous note that gradually rose in perfect pitch. As his voice rose, so did the water. A small, lumpy ball of water about the size of his head floated into the air. Jae changed notes, the song slow and swaying. The ball of water gently rocked back and forth in time with the melody.

Jae maintained the song for five bars, before dropping the pitch and cut the song with one last somber note. The ball of water sunk down and the surface of the lake smoothed. Jae panted, unused to that song but elated all the same.

Yuki felt it, the thrum of energy like the feeling of static before lightning struck. It felt as though the judgement of the sapphire waters was coming; waiting; ready to swallow him up. A beautiful melody with a sharp edge to it rather than a strong one. Actually, he found himself jealous. He couldn't do things like that with his voice. The feeling crackled within him, and he had to work hard to suppress it.

"...that was amazing." He managed to make out, the envy settling in his stomach and swirling around like a tempest. "I wish I could do something like that..." he muttered, staring at the spot where the water had settled as if it were going to surface once again. He was curious about the panting thing, since Yuki's own songs didn't tend to tire him out like that, but who knew? Maybe it drew more out of Jae. To the snow-haired boy, singing was more like breathing - it was second nature. In fact, not singing was the weirder idea.

"It's...nice," he smiled, pushing the maelstrom down as far as it would go.

"Y-yeah." Jae said, suddenly anxious. Though Yuki said it was amazing, the comment felt off. Yuki seemed off. Jae couldn't explain it, but he felt as though he'd done something wrong. "I. . . I had to work hard to learn it." Jae said, trying to defend himself but unsure for what reason. He worked so hard to gain this ability, and it stung to feel as though it were not unimpressive.

Maybe Yuki simply didn't like him. The thought. . . hit hard. Jae wasn't sure what he did to offend but it must have been his fault. He shouldn't have been so familiar and ask to practice singing together. It must have made Yuki feel uncomfortable. Ugh, stupid! He shouldn't blurt things like that. "Um," It would be best if he made an excuse to leave. "Um, I'll see you around school? Or, um, the community center?"
