The Funeral of Our Youth

Rachel didn't seem to hear that Addie had spoken. "I hated your parents too. That's why I killed them." She put her head in her hands and started sobbing.

Adelina froze in shock. Her parents had been good people... why? Anger boiled in her and she grit her teeth, holding herself back from physically hurting the woman. "You have no right to cry," she hissed with a smooth sort of anger. "You killed my parents consciously along with my sister and I. And now you just harmed your own son. I won't let the trend continue... suck it up and get over it. You have no right at all to feel sorry for yourself."

She looked at Andrew, wrapping her arms around him. "Come on, I'll help you up," she said quietly, hoping he was still holding on strongly.

Rachel didn't respond again.

Andrew shook his head. "No, Addie. I can't." He whispered. He went lax. For some reason, As Long As You're Mine was stuck in his head. He started humming softly.

Adelina lost her breath. "You can't? What do you mean you can't?" She was panicking. He wasn't going to give up... was she? "No! Come on! Get up, we can make it!"

As he started humming, there was a knot in her throat. That was the first song they had sung together...

This couldn't be happening...

Andrew knew he was about to die. And he was in serious pain. Very serious pain. "Sing with me?" He whispered to Addie, trying to take his mind off of it.

He hadn't answered the question. Adelina's eyes watered as she came to the realization that it couldn't be good. She swallowed hard to get that that knot out of her throat and nodded. "Kiss me too fiercely, hold me too tight... I need help believing you're with me tonight... my wildest dreamings could not for see lying beside you, with you wanting me..." Her voice was quivering. She should be trying to fix the wound, not sing with him!

And his mother wasn't doing anything, either...

She forced herself to smile. "And just for this moment, as long as you're mine — I've lost all resistance, and crossed some borderline!" The next part made tears come to her eyes. "And if it turns out it's over too fast, I'll make every last moment last... as long as you're mine..."

Andrew took a deep breath, but it hurt. "Maybe I'm brainless, maybe I'm wise... His voice was barely audible and a little scratchy. But you've got me seeing through different eyes...Somehow I've fallen under your spell...and somehow I feel it's up that I fell..."

He coughed slightly, but kept singing anyways. "Every moment....as long as you're mine...I'll wake up my body and make up for lost time....say there's no future, for us as a pair..." His voice trailed off when he'd run out of air. He toll a deep breath.

Adelina hated to see him in this kind of pain. She would have started bawling, but he wanted her to sing with him. She didn't want to go against what he wanted in his last moments. The line 'no future for us as a pair' only made her heart shatter even more. This song had truly been made for them... in the beginning, and now in the end, it had completely described their love. Strong, but it hadn't lasted forever...

"And although I may know, I don't care... just for this moment, as long as you're mine, come be how you want to, and see how bright we shine!" She figured she would let him do the rest. Even if it might hurt him, she wanted him to at least be happy...

"Borrow the moonlight...until it is through...and know: I'll be here, holding you...as long as you're mine..." Andrew couldn't hold the last note very long at all.

He took a deep breath and put his hand to Addie's cheek. "I love you..." He whispered as his eye closed.
