The tragedy that had occured near the lake a week ago was drifting into the past. Put out of the minds of many people, aside from those who might have been impacted more directly by it.

There were rumors of an increase in misty buildup around the lake in the evenings and just before dawn but it was hard to tell if it was true or just superstitious minds scrambling in the wake of such a painful event.

But that night there definitely was a curtain of mist collecting over the surface of the cool water in the wake of a hot and humid day. It built and built and then drifted out over the shoreline like the sluggish tendrils of some lazy monster unburdened by the human standard of time.

Curiously though it began to thicken in one place on particular. Enough to where one misshapen blob of a fog cloud formed and lingered unnaturally. Perhaps enough to draw attention from the more curious of passers-by.

Smokey was fully aware of the suicide that happened around the lake. It caused a lot of people to stop visiting the lake, which was unfortunate. Smokey was part Fire, but that didn't mean they couldn't appreciate the other elements. It wasn't uncommon to see them hanging around the lake after they visited the library.

And that definitely didn't mean their natural curiosity didn't have them questioning the mist building up around the lake after the recent suicide around here. It was like all those human horror stories they heard about! So Smokey began coming to the lake more often to take notes about the mist. To see when it built up and when it dissipated.

One night... boy did it build up. Well, it built up in a specific area. Smokey kept their distance while keeping their eyes firmly locked on it. Something was being summoned. Just in case there was an emergency, they pulled out their pho—Wait, they had Roa in their brain. If there was an emergency, they could call him and immediately explaining the situation.

Nothingness.

Blissful, comforting ignorance. Devoid of unsettling emotions or worries. The clouds in the sky didnt care about feelings or loneliness. The water in the air just went on doing what it did regardless.

Until it didnt. Until it condensed further and further into a more physical form. Tall and lithe. Several branches off of the main form. Arms and legs, yes that's what those were called.

Messy medium length white hair cascading out from the top of the form, plastered to the head as if stepping out of a shower. Large solid black orbs for eyes, a small nose and lips parted to reveal small sharp fangs. Small black horns protruded from their skull. Blood red claws dug into the soft dirt as their weight pressed them down into the soil and their fingers flexed as more claws appeared there.

The unblinking eyes scanned the area passively as the head turned. The face contorting slightly as the being became confused. Could be confused again. Could think. Could breathe.

Tril was unclothed but their body had none of the features that would necessitate the desire for modesty. Like a mannequin, but deadlier. At the moment though they almost seemed like they were sleepwalking.

If Smokey thought quicker, they would have used their phone to record the event. Someone was being summoned from the mist. No, not just anyone. Smokey had met Tril before. They once disappeared into water vapor. Connect the dots, Smokey. A student died here, the rumors said it was Tril, mist started appearing, and now the mist was turning into a person.

Unprepared for all of this, Smokey waited several seconds for the figure to familiarize themself with their surrounding. Then, as they once again pulled out their phone, they spoke up. "Tril?" For now, they wouldn't call Roa for help. They didn't want to risk waking him up for something that wasn't an emergency. For all they knew, Tril just needed some time to take things in before being led off to the school.

The confusion deepened, brows furrowing as they tapped their claws together. Until Smokey called their name out. It was almost like that simple sound broke the spell.

Tril realized they were living and not back in their homeworld. They never managed to connect the huge swirling mass of beings that was the Fog they knew. Only the emptiness of non existence for a time, and the feeling like a part of them hadn't returned. An intangible wound, possibly permanent.

Tril moved their lips as if trying to speak but, like someone who hasn't spoken in a long time, only hoarse stuttering sounds came out. Until finally they said their first recognizable word. "Nnn-nooooo!" ((No!)) It was a furious, pained whisper of anguish at where they were. The anger was accompanied by, or perhaps allowed to be expressed especially well by, them shifting to a reddish skinned demonic form with sharp angular horns and a height of about 8 feet tall.

And then just as suddenly they shifted once more to shrink down to about 3 feet tall, with dark skin of an amphibious nature and huge green eyes that seemed built to show a sense of sadness. Claws held out in Smokey's direction as if prepared to lash out if they approached too close.

"N-not supposed to be here... want to be... home..."

Relief flooded Smokey. Tril wasn't in a feral state of mind. They made no move to attack Smokey or to flee from them. They only looked confused.

That relief disappeared almost immediately when Tril replied to Smokey with a drawn-out whisper so full of pain that Smokey could feel their heartstrings being tugged on. It took them a moment to realize that not only was Tril hurt (emotionally or physically?) but they were angry at well. Smokey was fully prepared to defend themself if Tril turned out to be aggressive.

That was the right move, as Tril grew into a monstrous demonic figure... before becoming much than their original height smaller. If there was anything to compare this Tril to, it would be a small, scared child.

Smokey understand what the claws meant and kept their distance. This was followed by them loosening their stance. Treating the scared demon as a threat that needed to be dealt with quickly would've only worsened things.

"Home? Were you trying to go home?" Smokey awkwardly spoke those words, grasping at any way to help. "I could help... maybe? Or point you in the right direction?"

The small sad-eyed Tril blinked slowly as they shook their head. There was nothing. No way to go back, short of some crazy magical spell that they had no way of comprehending or directing to the right place anyway. Tril was stuck there on Earth and trapped on Manta Carlos.

"N-no. I can't go home. It didn't work," their bottom lip quivered slightly and then they looked around them once more. There was only the one person. They could strike quickly and... but it wasn't worth it. Even if the kill was guaranteed without potential issues it would be of no benefit to them.

Tril held their ground though. Still puzzling out what they should even do now. "You can't help me. No one can help me. Maybe I can go live in the forest."

Smokey was pushing things too fast. Tril just revived from their suicide and was going through mood swings. Smokey should've known better than to act like their issues could easily be solved with some help from a stranger.

For several seconds, Smokey was silent, trying to think of what to say. One thing was for sure: they didn't want Tril to run away to the forest. They needed to handle this situation with the tact they usually didn't have. Tact they never trained to have.

"I think working with the school is better. Are you from a different dimension? There's a club for people stuck here that might be able to help. Sounds like that will accomplish a lot more than living in the forest."

"No clubs. No school. You are all pretending. You and the girl who said no to me dying," Tril hissed and briefly shifted to take on Liliana's face before returning to the inhuman, scared and very sad features again.

But Tril also slumped down into a seated position. Being reborn, especially with such emotional circumstances, was really draining. "Maybe I tried to be too human. The Fog didnt like it and rejected me too." It almost certainly wasnt true. The connection was still there. It just didnt lead anywhere past the mists in this area at the moment.

Smokey was just called an liar.

These were the times Smokey was thankful that they were commanded to attend therapy. Who knows what Smokey would have done. Well, Smokey did, actually. They would have shouted at Tril or did something petty, like telling them to go off to the forest and never be found.

Deep breaths. In. Out. In. Out.

With both of them calm (or Tril at least too tired to pull anything), Smokey was actually able to register their words. For once, Smokey genuinely connected to Tril. They were certain that that was the key to getting through to them.

Mimicking Tril by also sitting down, they began to speak. "I... I understand that. I was sent away here to learn a lesson, and the island expected me to not act like me. To act human. I think that's what I hate the most about this place. You have to be human enough to be accepted." Emotions were flaring inside of Smokey that they had long since buried deep inside themself.

Deep breaths. In. Out. In. Out.

"What's the Fog like? Maybe I can understand that too."
