Cheeto was actually taking accounting? Chloe’s chuckling died down a little. “Wait, are you for real?” It seemed like she was, in fact, for real. Chloe caught her breath. Lunch became awkward. “Er, sorry,” muttered the demon.

She was happy to hear the conversation go back on track. “No, there weren’t any goblins in my world. At least not that I knew about. And I’m, uh… not going to enroll in any classes yet. Aurora might be able to send me back home, still.” Aurora didn’t seem too hopeful about that, and Chloe didn’t want to think about what it would mean to be stranded here for the rest of her life. It would mean never seeing any of her old friends, her family, or anyone she used to know ever again. Like they had never even existed in the first place.

“Aurora can still send me back.” Chloe repeated, as though repeating it would make it more true. Her voice was drenched with melancholy. She tried to cheer herself up: “But hey, maybe I’ll see if I can find some goblins when I get back. Where all do you tend to stay, in the world?” The demon's smile was decidedly weak.

"W-Well, that's good." Cheeto returned the smile. Hers seemed kinda weak too at first, but she reached up and put a hand on Chloe's shoulder, trying to make herself look a bit happier about it, trying to buck up a bit. "Hey, you will. You will get back home, okay?" Cheeto kept smiling and didn't remove her hand from Chloe's shoulder. She hid how she felt like she could relate on one level, being somewhat far removed from her own people. She kept her own smile broad and cheery as she sat back down, scratching her chin. "Welllll... I wasn't supposed to tell anyone."

Cheeto gave a conspiratorial look around the cafeteria before leaning in and whispering for Chloe and Chloe alone. "I know me and my sister came from caves under the Black Forest in Germany, and there have been goblins there since forever." She leaned back in her seat and looked at her tray. After a few seconds Cheeto realized something and her expression changed from strength for Chloe to disappointment at her revelation. "I grabbed this pudding but I hate this flavor, you want it?" It was blueberry.

Chloe hoped Cheeto was right. Thanksgiving was right around the corner, too; Chloe hated Thanksgiving, but she also hated the thought of being stranded from her family for the holidays. She couldn’t win either way.

She tried to focus on the positives. Maybe when she got back, she might discover goblins!

It was at this point Chloe realized it was probably illegal for her to go on a plane, in her world. Or if not illegal, at least she would risk death or indefinite detainment. So she would need another way to get from her home in the States to Germany. And even if she managed that, she would need to find a way to investigate without anyone seeing her or knowing what she was. There were so many risks… and even if she did find them, what then? She might open up the goblins to the same kind of abuse her people had been getting. So she’d have to keep them a secret.

“Pudding,” Chloe repeated. “Uh… sure.” Chloe wiped her spoon off on a napkin then reached out for a sample. Tasting that it was good, she got another mouthful. And another. Why didn’t she get blueberry pudding herself, when she was in line? “So, is stuff about goblins supposed to be a secret?”

"Well..." Cheeto put a finger to her chin and thought on it. Admittedly she wasn't 100% sure, tradition dictated goblins generally keep themselves separate from humans, most fey had their own approaches but goblins tended to be isolationists. She knew her own people, the town she grew up in, didn't want to be found out and cause some huge scene revealing the existence of goblins to the world. "Goblins just like to keep to themselves, they cut contact with humans long, long ago. Granted that doesn't go for all goblins, most old fairy tales come from actual events."

She smiled at Chloe and watched as she tucked into the pudding. "I just don't like blueberries, something about them..." She stuck her tongue out at the thought, though couldn't put her finger on just what she disliked. "I dunno about all goblins or how different your home is, but the Black Forest is beautiful so at least take a trip to Germany." Cheeto gave another needly-toothed grin at Chloe, though at the back of her mind she felt a pang of remorse. It was hard for her to click with someone this well, and just as quickly she learned that she'll probably never see Chloe again.

The more Chloe thought about it, the less likely it seemed that she would ever get to see Germany. Especially not if Aurora managed to send her home.

Chloe nodded, then sighed. “If goblins exist in my world, I can understand why they’d hide. The normals just found out about people like me, where I came from. It’s a shitstorm. Some of them nearly killed my…” Chloe furrowed her eyebrows, struggling for the right words. “…ex-pseudo-boyfriend, I guess.”

At the end of her little monologue, the demon girl was holding a spoonful of blueberry pudding, staring at it, contemplating. “Yeah,” she decided eventually, “Maybe you guys have the right idea. Being isolationists and all.”

She still wanted Aurora to send her home, though. All of her family and friends lived there.

Cheeto listened to Chloe, but as she did her ears started to droop as a frown crept onto her face. Poor girl, sounds like things weren't all that good where she lived before, but it still must be painful to be here. Cheeto tilted her head to one side, trying to maintain eye contact with Chloe. "To be fair..." She started as she gave a small smile to Chloe. "My sister and I aren't really isolationists. Well her more than me..." She reached out and put one of her hands on Chloe's. "Yeah, it was rough at times, but we found friends. Tall friends." Her face changed from a sympathetic smile to a conspiratorial grin, like she was letting Chloe in on some secret in-joke.

"Would... you be interested in talking to Aurora about a way to bring you back, too? I mean..." She looked worried again, giving Chloe a concerned stare as she withdrew her hand, fearing it'd be weird to keep it on hers for too long. "people did try to kill your sorta-ex-boyfriend." She looked confused at that but didn't press the issue, if there was one thing Cheeto was very familiar with it was overwhelming awkwardness and that topic seemed to be a pandora's box of weirdness.

Chloe didn’t mind Cheeto’s hand being there. She chuckled. “Yeah, I guess we’d seem freakishly tall to you guys. Didn’t think of it that way.”

A way to bring her back? It was a tempting thought.

“They’d probably try to kill me, too, honestly.” She wasn’t looking at Cheeto anymore. She was looking past her, lost in her headspace “And for all I know, they might’ve already…” She sighed, stopping herself from going any further with that thought. “Yes. I should ask Aurora about that.”

At this point, Chloe seemed to remember that Cheeto was there. She made eye contact. “Let’s not talk about my world, though. It’s a really shitty world.” A really shitty world that she, for some reason, wanted to return to. She needed a subject change. Badly.

“So… Goblins are isolationists, but you and your sister are here. What’s that about?”

The little goblin girl had a rather large grin on her face, as if she was put into her element. "Goblins used to be much more social hundreds of years ago. There used to be way more goblins too." Cheeto remembered the old books she used to read and the old stories she used to hear. "We were everywhere up until around the industrial revolution... Granted, we were also starting to get a little less common around that time too." She reached up and scratched her ear absentmindedly as she spoke "No one really knows why, but back home people said it was a magical thing, you know? Some really old magic was making all the supernatural creatures like fey and goblins and trolls just sorta fade away and go into hiding." Her ears drooped a bit as Cheeto prodded her food with her fork, looking down at her tray. "Thats when we went into hiding, a the whole goblin race started to dig into caves and vanish into forest, nobody saw us since then." After a small pause Cheeto's ears perked up as she gave a small grin to Chloe. "Well, until me and Dorito."

Cheeto shifted back in her chair a bit, putting her hands behind her head as she spoke. "Me and my sister were special. We were born as identical twins under a powerful omen!" She seemed disproportionately proud of that, though it was a remarkable coincidence. "Yep, my sister and I were born with a shared mind and a special power each. Nobody knows where they came from since nobody has ever seen these powers in goblins before!" Cheeto picked up some food and from her tray and picked at it, speaking between mouthfuls.

"When we had reached our teens, our parents had contacted the school through the internet- Our village lived a little closer to humans than others, so we got internet." Was she... bragging? Cheeto was bragging a bit! Granted what she was bragging about certainly seemed worth bragging about. "We got brought to the school in secret, and here we are! I'm one of the only two goblins to interact with humans in years."

Chloe listened attentively to Cheeto’s story, nodding or reacting as appropriate to show she was following along. She had to suppress a giggle at her sister’s name, though; why would goblin parents name their kids after human junk food?

All the stuff about old magic and fey and trolls and omens granting magic powers, Chloe just accepted in stride. Her old ideas about what was and wasn’t possible in the world all seemed to be wrong anyway. Might as well take this story at face value.

When Cheeto was done, Chloe spoke up: “This must be pretty exciting for you, then.” This felt a little like an understatement, given how excited Cheeto was to tell her story. “Like one small step for goblin, one giant leap for goblinkind. That kind of thing.” Chloe then realized that Cheeto’s entire community was almost literally living under a rock during the moon landing, so maybe she wouldn’t get that reference.

She took in another mouthful of food, chewed, swallowed. “What’s this about special powers and shared minds, though?”

Cheeto seemed to think about it for a while before she responded and gave a small shrug. "Well, sort of..." The little goblin looked a little concerned, prodding her tray with her fork as she spoke. "I mean, there are definitely a lot of goblins who are going to want to stay hidden..." She sighed a bit. "Besides, I don't think the world is ready for the likes of us to pop out and be part of the world again." Cheeto shrugged and looked up, smiling. "But hey, I'm here and Dorito's here. I've made friends and I wouldn't trade my time here for anything."

Chloe brought up powers, and her connection with her sister. "Well the connection, we've always had it. I mean, you know how they say twins can be very similar? Finish each other's sentences?" Cheeto began to eat again as she spoke, nearing the end of her meal. "Well, ever since we were born we could hear each other's thoughts, feel each other's feelings. We had to learn how to shield our thoughts from each other, how to be separate from each other. I mean it's not 100% but we can keep to ourselves when we need to." She put her fork down, having now finished her lunch. "As for powers..." Cheeto grinned as she started to float off the chair, a light seeming to come from beneath her. "I got this one." She pulled back from the table slightly and hovered off her chair, arms spread as a shimmering light spread out behind and under her, lifting her like a prismatic hammock. Cheeto crossed her legs and leaned back as the bed of light floated a little higher, drawing stares from many of the other students.

Cheeto rarely used her powers. In fact, she practically never did, so it was always an odd sight when she suddenly lifted into the air with them. "Dorito, though?" Cheeto floated back down until she was back in her chair, the light vanishing almost instantly. "That's a secret, I promised that I'd never tell what it is." She said it almost playfully.
