It had been an exciting day.

Chloe had been about to start a normal day of school, when a drunken amateur mage summoned her to another plane of reality where you can talk about “a drunken amateur mage” and also be talking about a real person who actually exists, and who really sucks at doing actual magic. She had also been propositioned by this drunken amateur mage, because he mistook her for a succubus, because apparently it’s reasonable to think that those are real too.

It was probably reasonable to think that anything could be true in this version of the universe. Drunken succubus-summoning amateur mages were just the tip of this freakshow iceberg. If she thought her old school was weird – well, just take a look at this place! Hidden on a remote island in the pacific and full of things that never even pretended to be human. Because non-human sentient life is a thing here.

You know what isn’t a thing though? Anyone that Chloe ever knew or loved.

It was a lot for Chloe to process.

Chloe hadn’t exactly gotten a tour of the school yet, either. Everyone, her included, was still hoping that this was temporary, and that whatever magic had pulled her into this universe could be reverse-engineered to send her back. But she still needed to eat, and there was a very real possibility that she would be stuck here forever. Might as well go to the cafeteria, maybe even try to make a few friends while she was there.

She felt very out of place, still wearing the uniform of a school that didn't exist in this universe, but it was the only clothing she had.

She assumed that this was the chow line. She had a free pass to eat whatever she wanted, while everything got sorted out, so she was ready to go in that regard. The person in front of her in line was decidedly too speckled and green-haired and short for Chloe to think she was human. Or at least Chloe assumed it was a she? It looked female, at least. She decided to get her attention.

“Um, hi.” Chloe crouched down a little so the green-haired whatever-it-was would be sure that she was talking to her. “I… am literally new to this entire universe, I guess. And also this school. And my name is Chloe. And technically I’m a human, sort of? But uh… hi.”

She may have been new to this universe, but she didn’t want this – person, let’s go with that – this person to think that Chloe was also new to communicating with other sentient life forms. Also would it be rude to ask someone what the hell they were supposed to be? Because Chloe really wanted to ask this person what the hell she was supposed to be.

Cheeto had gotten into line behind some demon looking humans and had grabbed herself a food tray. At times she could feel homesick but eating cooked grubs and tubers was something she certainly didn't miss. Some students complained about the school's food but Cheeto was fascinated by it, especially by her namesake. Cheesy, but seemingly completely artificial! As the diminutive creature mulled the thoughts over, someone behind her started to talk. Cheeto turned quickly, her initial surprise turning into a mild sense of wonder at what she saw.

Two short horns, pitch black, and one of those soft, pink, human faces. Cheeto's eyes remained locked on Chloe's as she clutched the empty tray to her chest. It seemed this girl had one helluva problem too, did she just say 'new to this entire universe?' Cheeto's voice had a sandy rasp to it as she spoke, sympathy in those big emerald eyes of hers. "Wow. I mean, I learned what humans are only a few years ago but... A whole other universe? W-Well..." Cheeto looked away for a bit, thinking...

Wait holy cow her feet! They were large, clawed, and her legs didn't look all that human at all! That plus the horns probably summed up the entirety of the 'sort of human'. Cheeto caught herself starting to stare and snapped her eyes back up to Chloe's and gave a nervous grin. "ah-hehehehe..." She swallowed loudly before continuing, awkwardness emanating from her. "I... uh... I'm Cheeto, and if you want I can show you around this school and the parts of the universe I can get to." She gave a smile, still hugging onto the foot tray despite it being large enough for her to use as an archaic shield.

Chloe noticed Cheeto staring at her feet, and she almost wanted to laugh. Even here, people would think she was kind of a freak. Even the spotty short girl with the bright green hair. Taking note of the tray Cheeto was holding, Chloe grabbed one of her own.

“I could definitely use a tour,” she admitted, nodding. “Nice to meet you Cheeto. Though, uh…” Chloe was really glad Cheeto mentioned that, about not knowing what humans were until recently. It might make the question she was about to ask seem more acceptable.

“Okay, I can’t actually think of a polite way to ask this question, so I think I’ll just repeat the part where I’m literally from another universe, then ask it. What are you supposed to be?” Glancing around, Chloe could identify at least ten other different groups of people she could direct this question to. Though she have might fit in, in a way, by virtue of being weird, she was still way out of her element.

Cheeto knew it was coming but Chloe asked much faster than she thought she would. Before, Cheeto wasn't all that happy to answer but she'd gotten used to people finding her odd. Besides, this girl game from a whole separate reality, freaked out was an understatement. "Oh, I'm a Goblin!" She gave a broad smile, it used to be awkward to say that but as of late it's become something she felt she could take pride in. The line had started to move, though, and Cheeto gave a small squeak and hurried to catch up. The kitchen staff had set out an impressive array of food and Cheeto was quick to pick and choose as she shuffled along, filling her tray.

"We can start the tour after we eat, anything here catching your fancy?" The school rarely spared expenses when it came to student comfort, and the selection of food ranged from the exotic to the homely. Cheeto had filled her tray with a surprisingly balanced meal, and turned back to give Chloe another warm, welcoming smile. Her little needle-like teeth on display.

“A goblin.” Chloe repeated. Goblins were a real thing that existed here. She didn’t know why this fact surprised her so much. Actual demons were a thing. Horses that could turn into people – instead of it being the other way around – were also a thing.

Cheeto made an adorable squeaking sound when she noticed that the line moved without them. Chloe resisted the urge to laugh, but only barely. It still brightened her day, and she was still grinning, but she didn’t want to alienate her new acquaintance by full-on laughing at her.

“There’s so much that looks good,” the demon-girl remarked. “This is a real step up from my last school.” Her lunch would be far from balanced today – spicy foods, fatty foods, even foods that she didn’t even recognize, but boy did they look and smell appetizing. When all was said and done, she had a lot of different things on her plate.

She pre-empted any criticism that may have come from the goblin: “Don’t judge me.” Then: “So, uh, right. Where are we sitting?”

Cheeto couldn't help but break out into giggles at 'don't judge me'. "I'd never, I promise!" Her response seemed remarkably sincere, though a lot of her own tray was identical to Chloe's. She looked around and found an empty table, nobody else seemed to be going over to that one and Cheeto almost hopped in place excitedly as she looked up to Chloe. "How about there? C'mon!" She trotted off towards the table quickly.

She almost tripped on how quickly she had moved up to the table and scrambled into the chair, smiling over at Chloe and waiting for her to join her at the table. She was about to start on her meal before suddenly blinking and tilting her head as she spoke to Chloe. "Is there anything you wanted to ask? I mean, I'll try to fill you in as best I can before the tour on whatever you wanna know about."

Cheeto was too adorable. Her excitability, the giggling, the way she bounced around. The demon-girl was grinning again as she followed the goblin to their table.

She prepared to eat her food, but stopped before the first mouthful. Was there anything she wanted to ask? “…There are a lot of things I could ask,” Chloe said. “But I’m not sure where to start. I mean…” She didn’t actually know where she was going with that sentence, so instead of finishing it she put some food in her mouth.

“Mmm!” It tasted as good as it smelled. She chewed, and she gave herself a few moments to think.

She swallowed. “Oh! Uh, magic doesn’t exist where I come from. I mean, there are still people with supernatural powers. I can drain people’s strength by touching them. But, people can’t say some magic words or do a ritual to cast a spell. Can… can anyone learn to do magic? Or…?”

Cheeto had started on her own food, happily munching into her wide selection of meals as Chloe spoke. Not to say Cheeto isn't listening, her big ears had perked up as her eyes moved quickly from her plate to Chloe and back again. "Start wherever you want, Chloe!" She munched down another mouthful, it was hard to even see what it was considering how fast the little creature was eating. She did seem genuinely concerned by Chloe's plight, kicking her little feet in her chair and every now and then offering something from her tray.

Magic came up though, Cheeto didn't know too much about it, other than what her people practiced. Though there were mages in the school, wizards and witches and the like. "Well, there are people around the school who learn magic, and who practice it. I can't see why you wouldn't be able to learn." She scratched her little chin and snapped her fingers. "We can bring it up with the staff, I think there are some beginner magic classes too, or we could talk to one of the councilors and they can help you get started..." She trailed off, prattling off a number of suggestions excitedly as she grinned up at Chloe.

Chloe interrupted Cheeto’s suggestions with a burst of laughter.

“I’m sorry,” She apologized. “It’s just… this is all so nuts. I’ve only ever seen magic in books or, you know, fiction. Now I’m in a magic school where you can learn magic. But you also have, like, journalism and,” she snickered, “accounting!” Her laughter came back in full force. It was a quiet laughter – she was trying to hold it in, but she was still convulsing and giggling uncontrollably.

“This isn’t funny,” she managed to say, breathless. “I get that it’s an important job. And stuff. But, why would you go to a magic school, where you can learn magic, and study ac—“ she couldn’t even finish her sentence. She was crying from laughter. “I really hope an accountant isn’t overhearing this. This actually isn’t funny.”

And it was starting to occur to her that maybe magic was a really dry and boring subject, and that might be why some people would ever choose not to learn it. Or maybe it was a really difficult skill to pick up, or you had to have a natural talent for it, or something.

But still. You could take a class to learn actual magic.

At first Cheeto looked worried, almost hurt. It was clear she thought she had upset Chloe at first, but her laughter was infectious and soon Cheeto was giggling along with her. She started trying to catch her breath, then frowned suddenly. "Wait I'm taking accounting..." Cheeto looked away and scratched the back of her head for a few seconds before blinking and deciding to get back on track. "So... Yeah. After that tour we can go talk to someone about getting you enrolled in... Magic studies or something?" Cheeto giggled nervously, unsure of whether or not she was trying to be funny or if there actually was a magic studies course.

Cheeto shifted a little in her seat, picking up some of her food and nibbling it almost self-consciously. Her attention seemed to have wandered for a while before she suddenly snapped back and spoke through a mouthful of food. "So there were no goblins in the world you were from before? That's so weird!" It seemed as inconceivable to Cheeto as a world without humans would seem to Chloe, or about as inconceivable as a world with goblins.
