Neo had arrived at the bar ahead of Tez. Partly because she enjoyed being first and partly because she wanted to see him arrive in the dress. She wondered if he actually would do it now. Technically there was no actual contract stating he had to, on top of that if he had no access to a dress there was little that could be done. It was really more about the sport of it, the fun.

She had been nervous waiting for him to arrive and had already ordered self a double that she had slipped back rather quickly while handing the bartender amount due.

She turned to look around the bar. Several Centaurs could be seen at all corners. Some drinking, some talking, all having a good time. A few of them were even from her farm, which was always nice to see. The ones she knew nodded at her knowingly. On a normal night she would have gone over to have a drink and a laugh with them, but tonight was different.

The humans and other species that were here looked just as happy and relaxed as the centaurs. Some of them had on ten-gallon hats and boots. some of these people she recognized from neighboring farms, and a few others from the farmers market. Everyone seemed to be having a good time.

As Tez entered the bar she struggled to surpress her giggle. He had done it. He had arrived wearing a dress, and not a bad looking one at that. She waved him over to her spot at the bar. Many people had stopped to gawk as he entered. It wasn't every day that a guy walked into the Barn wearing a dress.

"I'm glad you made it. I was worried you didn't know where it was." She was still grinning as she turned to face the bar while he ordered his drink. "Oh for me? I'll take a beer to start." She said confidently

"So uh... I like your dress. It compliments your figure." She teased as the bartender handed them their drinks.

The bartender pulled a pint from one of the taps, and slid the two glasses towards Neo and Tez. Tez paid the bartender, before taking up his own glass, and taking a sip. It wasn't particularly nice, but hey it was alcohol.

"Thanks" said Tez, giving a customary twirl, before saying, in a joking voice "Does it make my butt look big?"

It was a proper country bar. Tez felt like a real city slicker in this neck of the woods. And not in a good way. Tez liked the country, especially visiting. He was a city boy through and through, but the countryside reminded him of the boarding schools he had been in before being escorted to Manta Carlos. There was something about the folk. Down to earth, plain speaking. In the city everyone had somewhere to be, and they each seemed to be running late, but in the country, well, people had time to stop and smell the roses. He could see himself living in a place like this, when he was older. He needed to live in the city now, for work, and education, but if he got a scout job, he could afford to move out of the city.

"This place is nice, quiet." Tez commented looking around "I've never really been out to the Manta Carlos countryside, i've only been once or twice on trips when I was younger. Lots of space to run. Is your family's farm nearby?"

Neo giggled as he took the teasing well and twirled. It was good to be around people who weren't always so serious. Still, though they were receiving a lot of attention and she partly felt bad for that, as she was the one who made the bet. "hey... Cmon let's go upstairs." She backed away from the bar as she spoke holding her glass of beer securely as she did. "Follow me." She instructed as she led him over to the ramp up to the loft.

Up top, there were only a few other bar-goers. Even up top, the music was still able to be heard as it poured out of the speakers down below. Neo Led Tez over to a table next to the railing that overlooked the rest of the bar. There were a couple of chairs up here and she grabbed one as she passed, dragging it to the table for Tez.

"So Centaur farms is maybe 10 or 11 miles from here. Not too far for me. Maybe 10 minutes run for me. The city was nice enough to set us up comfortably between the school and the city to better accommodate us."

She drank deeply from her beer and smiled. "There are like thirty of us now. We keep growing as other join the herd. Everyone has a place and jobs to do." She loved her life her family, he everything. It was a simple life in many ways but it was fulfilling.

"So whats your story?"

Tez followed Neo up the stairs to the loft in the barn. It was quieter here, much more personal, and Tez felt more at ease. He took the chair with a "Thanks" and pulled it to the table, sitting close to Neo, as he sipped his whisky. From here he could see the patrons of the bar. WEll, their heads anyway. There were a surprising amount of cowboy hats here.

"That's nice. I bet you folks produce a whole load of food. I wonder if i've ever had any without knowing" said Tez, with a short laugh, before switching to the slightly more uncomfortable subject:

"My story... eh..."

Tez was always apprehensive about telling his story. It was long, and rambling and, in most places, weird. But he decided to go for a slightly more concise version, more where he came from, less creepy god nonsense.

"My mum's an archeologist. She's out in Egypt excavating a city at the moment. The guy who... made me is an Aztec god. I looked totally normal, no weird legs or tats or eyes until I was ten. I was out in the narrow realities then. Then I kinda... shifted in the middle of a class. When I shifted back, I looked like this. Scouts turned up. I got taken here."

Tez took a breath. That was enough about the weird parts of his life. No mention of the god in the clouds trying to order him around or any of that stuff.

"I've been working at a club in town the past few years, but i'm going back to the academy to do my scout training, to join the Extraction Teams" said Tez with a slightly easier smile now he wasn't talking about his past "So weren't you born here? where are you from, if you don't mind me asking?"

Neo listened carefully as Tez told his story. It was in many ways similar to a lot of stories she had heard. A child with latent abilities suddenly develops into their powers or forms and they are brought here. Many families had been divided like this. Of course, that wasn't the whole thing. Many people had been saved like this as well.

"Me? Well, let's see. My family is from Greece. My mom and I and 5 others came over like 18 years ago. Since then others have joined us adding to our herd. I don't remember anything from Greece. I mean I was way too young." She smiled as she spoke, and her words flowed as freely as a well-rehearsed story. This was what she told everyone. The facts of her life. There were other things too. Little details, how she believed her father was in hiding, how her original herd was underground for safety. How she grew up being raised by other centaurs from other herds. Her life wasn't bad however, it was just difficult, and many of her stories weren't worth reciting so soon after meeting someone.

"I try not to think about the past. The odds of me ever going there are slim, so there is no point really dwelling on it. I tend to try to look ahead, like when I run. Visualize my finish line and get to it." Sometimes that finish line was just making it to the end of the day. She took another drink from her beer and smiled, leaning over the table a bit.

"So why the extraction teams? Like why leave the island?"

Neo's story was interesting. Tez had heard of the centaurs out in the country, but he rarely saw them in the city and, as such, paid them little mind. They were greek huh? He had heard of centaurs from greek legend, but he always imagined them running around on some immense american plain. But here, in the Barn, with Neo, he could see a microcosm of the island's centaur community. It was fun.

"Yeah, you can't change the past, only the future, and make it the best one possible. i'll drink to that." said Tez, holding up his glass before taking a drink. "You gotta keep running forwards. You'll get where you need to be eventually, and probably beat your record for running time in the process."

Tez smiled at this, remembering the dress. It was quite comfortable, to be honest. The race had been fun and, hell, he was out for a drink with a beautiful woman. He considered this a win, even if it wasn't one on the track.

"Why the extraction team? Well... I want to help people, to make a difference" said Tez, sipping at his whisky and leaning slightly further over the table towards Neo "I've got a friend who came to the island from... a pretty nasty place. I hear stories of the bad places some people were in before the island. I want to do my best to make sure that things like that never happen to people again. So the long and short of it is I want to make the world a better place. So what made you decide to study nursing?"

Neo stood silently, leaning on the railing while Tez explained his reasons. All in all, they seemed good. At the very least good intentioned and honest. Still, it raised a few more questions. These would need to wait a moment however as a young waitress came up the ramp and approached them.

"You folks doing alright? Can I get you another?"

Neo looked over at the waitress and smiled while holding up her glass. "I'll have another of these please." She said before downing the last sip of her beer. It wasn't easy for a centaur to become intoxicated. Their bodies and liver for that matter were far too large and efficient to be bested by a few drinks." And he will have one too." She said as she gestured to Tez.

As the waitress left with Neo's empty glass and drink order. She turned to look back at Tez now and smiled thoughtfully. "So you're a humanitarian then? That's not a bad way to live. But won't that have you out in the field a lot? You know. out in the narrow reality?"

"And your friend came from a bad spot? I'm sorry to hear that. I know a lot of people came here from bad spots. The world is kinda harsh out there." She rested her arm on the railing casually while she spoke. Her mom had told her that things had been bad for them right before they came here, but she couldn't remember any of that. In a way that made it different for her. She had no real basis of comparison to the outside world, just the stories she heard from others.

"Thank you" said Tez to Neo, with a smile, as the waitress returned up the stairs with a pair of beers, one in each hand and placed them on the table. Tez thanked her, and took a drink. It was rich, hoppy, and very strong. It was nice. Tez had been drinking since a young age, and, along with the general hardiness that came with being an avatar, his body had built up a tolerance, although he feared that Neo could outdrink him, if it came to that.

"Yeah, I will" said Tez, with a smile as he sipped his beer "But being out in the field is one of the awesome things about working in Extraction. I get to see the world. Glamours and myself... don't get along, but I would be willing to wear them so I can see the world. I'd also get to come back to Manta Carlos. All the extraction scouts I know come back here after missions and such, so I wouldn't be away for too long. This place is my home now. Maybe if I get hurt on a mission you can patch me up."

Tez laughed at this. It had taken him a long time for him to consider this place home. He still wished his mum would come and visit the islands more often, but her usual excuse was that she was too busy. Tez knew the island and it's residents made her feel uncomfortable. The last time he'd seen her in person had been at his high school graduation. But Manta Carlos was his home now. It wasn't the place, it was the people that made it.

"The world can be a bad place" said Tez "But there's some real beautiful places out there. Like the Rockies. And the Great Wall of China. I want to see all the places i've only seen in pictures. And the bad stuff, well, If i can make the world a little less harsh, then that's a success."

Neo nodded in agreement as she started in on her second drink. "The world can be a terrible place. I mean I don't know what it's actually like out there. But I have heard from a lot of people that its just hell for other species. I wouldn't want to be out there. But then again... I'm pretty happy where I am."

It was nice being away from things and taking a breather. She didn't do this as often as she wanted, and often when she came here and hung out with others from her herd, the talk would fall back to work. There was more to life than that.

"So. I want to be a nurse because... Well Because my mom thinks I'm suited for it. Lightweights like myself don't usually have too many career choices within a herd. In many cases, we aren't even good baby makers. Heavies handle most of the larger jobs, and Dairies handle child care. So in many cases, lights like me get stuck with medical types of jobs or odd careers."

She sighed as she looked over the railing. There were a lot of heavies here tonight. She could easily tell them apart from the few lights. Their wide and sturdy bodies were made to handle the toughest of jobs. And they often rubbed it in her face. That was why she pushed herself so hard. She had to be able to match them, to prove herself. And now, there wasn't a one amongst them that could catch her on the run.

"I know it's not as exciting as scouting and exploring the world. But it's something."

"It's all about finding the place where you're happy. And you're not stuck with the odd jobs. You've got the important jobs. If one of the heavies gets hurt, you get 'em up and running again"

Tez took another sip of his beer. He was a firm believer in that, with enough hard work, you could achieve anything. Each person was important, and kept things running, like cogs in a well oiled machine. Sometimes the cogs needed fixing, but it generally worked.

"You're... you're like the cement in a house. Without it, the house'd fall down. Without the lightweights the farm wouldn't work. You keep the heavy's lifting and the dairy's milking."

The lower floor had filled up slightly since Tez had arrived. There were more centaurs now. Some, had similar builds to Neo. Others were big and bulky, and looked like they could pull a truck. They reminded Tez a little of the rugby team at the school he had went to before the island. Other centaurs, all female, were quite buxom. These must be the dairy centauride, thought Tez. Neo was still the most beautiful one in the whole place, and that was saying something. Tez looked damn fine in a dress, so he came a close second.

"It may not be exciting, but it's important. And if you're happy, thats all that matters. So are the heavies like the big centaurs down there?" Said Tez, nodding his head to one side to incidate the larger centaurs on the lower floor of the barn.
