What was he doing here? The sixteen year old sophomore was already questioning the decision to come to Starlight Academy even though it was only into the late afternoon after his first day of attending the school. If the fierce scowl marring his young features didn’t give away his foul mood, the way his fingers repeatedly drummed against one leg easily gave away a just as powerful impression of irritation.
<p>
Gareth sat on one of the benches along the courtyard path with a textbook open within his lap. He was supposed to be studying the damned thing but if his jittery nerves and constant movement were any hint—he was having a bit of trouble.
<p>
Damn these freaks. Damn his mother, father, and all their filthy little children. Damn that lunatic of a rabbit—and, really, he wished him all the best. Wished him all the positive energy in the world to hopefully land him back into that friggin’ cage he talked so positively about and—
<p>
[color=BA0009]“Oh my God—will you shut up!”[/color] He suddenly burst out, his attention immediately snapping over toward some bushes and a tree where two squirrels had been racing along the trunk seemingly playing an innocent game of tag.
<p>
Gareth, on the other hand, knew it wasn’t an ‘innocent game of tag’ and he was damn well sick of hearing their godforsaken, disturbing, thoughts.
<p>
[color=BA0009]“Why don’t I bust your balls and make it so you can never reproduce again?”[/color] He seethed between clenched teeth as he stood from the bench, placed his textbook down, and began to move forward with every intention of doing every bit of harm he had promised.

Gabe had been making his way back to his dorm after a long lecture. He hadn't much wanted to go to it in the first place but he had important exams coming up and he needed to pass them if he wanted to pass this year. As much as he liked Starlight Academy he didn't want to be held back here any longer than necessary, and that would happen if he didn't start showing up to lectures - if only to rob notes from his friends about what had happened during all the classes he'd ditched.

Gareth shouting had been loud enough to break through the music that was playing from Gabe's headphones. He looked around to see where it had come from. Ugh I'll just ignore it , he decided realising it wasn't directed at him. He kept walking.

'“Why don’t I bust your balls and make it so you can never reproduce again?” ' At that Gabe turned back to face the teenager. "Dude calm down, what's after getting your panties in a twist? " He could almost hear the teen proclaiming that he didn't wear panties he wore boxers , he seemed like the type who'd need to point it out anyway.

Gabe couldn't understand it though, it wasn't like there was even anyone around who was making noise. He couldn't see anybody either. Perhaps this boy had powers that made him able to sense something Gabe couldn't.

Gareth heard the guy behind him but purposely chose to ignore him for a minute in order to lean down, swipe a handful of landscape decorative rocks, and then proceed to chuck them at the tree as well as the two squirrels. The furry gray creatures instantly skittered away and up the tree, disappearing from sight within seconds.
<p>
[color=BA0009]“Little bastards, die already!”[/color] Gareth cursed them and their entire kind before he finally turned to address the guy who no doubt found him a tad bit crazy. But then again this was a school full of ‘crazies’ so maybe it wasn’t so out of the ordinary.
<p>
The dark haired adult who stood before him looked normal enough—save for his impressively tall height—but Gareth didn’t let appearances fool him. For all he knew this guy could suddenly grow serpent heads and eat him for dinner.
<p>
[color=BA0009]“They’re giving my brain a twist is what they are doing,”[/color] Gareth told the guy and pointedly flicked his own temple as he emphasized the word ‘brain’. He walked back to the bench and flopped back down onto it, throwing one leg over the other.

Gabe blinked, a little shocked as he saw the teen throw rocks at the squirrels. So that was what was annoying him , he thought, realising now that it hadn't been a person after all. "What do you mean?" Gabe asked, curiosity getting the better of them. To him it didn't look like the squirrels had been doing very much at all, aside from running around a little. They had a right to do that surely?

Gareth was most likely not the oddest person Gabe had seen around the academy but he still found him a tad weird all the same. He studied the kid up and down, not quite sure what to make of him. He was half tempted to just leave, if he was honest. He wanted to get back to Bill and this guy was beginning to make him a bit uncomfortable. It'd be rude to leave now though after having started a conversation, if you could even call it that.

Gareth stared up at the dark haired adult for a prolonged moment before an almost cocky look adorned his features. A smug little smile curved his lips up as he answered quite plainly: [color=BA0009]“I talk to little furry four legged creatures.”[/color]

Despite the smugness and the brief surge of evil vindictiveness that had swelled within his chest, the moment that Gareth had actually said the words aloud he had felt his stomach drop and a sickening feeling wash over him.

Gabe had noticed Gareth opening his book too late, shit I could have got away so easily, why did I have to open my mouth? Gabe asked himself similar questions all of the time, he never learnt though that was the problem. He had an awful habit of speaking before thinking, it was one of the main reasons Gabe found himself in arguments he hadn't meant to get into.

"You do?" Gabe asked, meeting Gareth's eye. It was a cool power he had to admit, but he didn't know why the boy felt the need to look so smug about it. He considered this new piece of information for a couple moments. "So that's why you were making all that noise, man? You guys were having some kind of, " he paused and lifted his eyebrow, "argument?"

Gabe could only imagine what they had argued about. He shook his head as he thought through some possibilities. It all seemed a little bit odd, that wasn't to say Gabriel thought this boy was lying though. There were so many different powers at Starlight Academy that it'd be hard to find one that sounded unbelievable, at least to someone who had been at the school for any decent length of time.

Gabe could tell that Gareth didn't feel comfortable giving too much information away to him. He supposed he couldn't really blame him though, you had to be careful with strangers. Gabe didn't like telling people very personal stuff either unless he knew them well.

'I guess it’s not really ‘talking’ as much as it is hearing their… uh… thought patterns?' Gabe listened as Gareth tried to explain to him what his powers were like. Then he nodded, "hang on dude do you mean like you hear their thoughts, kinda like a telepath but only with animals?" He had considered another possibility as well, "or like you just get a general idea what they are thinking? Like...not specific thoughts."

Gabe itched at the bridge of his nose. His questions probably sounded really dumb and he hadn't meant for that to happen. But he didn't quite know how else to articulate them.

Gabe waited patiently for Gareth to explain. He couldn't blame him for taking his time, Gabe hadn't really phrased things in a clear way so it had probably confused the other guy. Gabe tapped his foot quietly to a rhythm in his head as the man talked.

"Oh yeah, I get it," Gabe nodded. "Yeah man I didn't think they could, " he referred to Gareth telling him that animals couldn't communicate like humans could. "Though when I was younger I thought that they had as complex thoughts as us humans do but we just couldn't understand them ", he laughed, "imagine if that had been true. "
