Mery sat in the lounge, reading a book. She ran her fingertips over the raised bumps on the page. She had learned to read braille long ago, and she could 'read' quickly now. Pooka lay on her lap, sleeping and acting as a book rest. She tilted her head up. Though she didn't need to, she usually kept her eyes upon the pages.

Nicolas walked into the room, lowering the hood of his sweat shirt as he did so, and looked around for a moment. This place was certainly... well, different. He'd just arrived here a few days ago, so he was obviously pretty new to the place. As he looked around, he noticed someone sitting alone, reading. He didn't want to interrupt them if they were busy, but he felt that he should at least try to get to know some of the people here.

He walked over to where she was, though he didn't really look at the book or notice the fact that it had bumps instead of actual words. Not like he would have cared had he seen it, anyway. "Hey," he greeted simply. "What are you reading?"

Mery turned her head in the direction the voice was coming from. "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, by Mark Twain, of course." It was hard to get book in braille, so Mery had read her few books over and over. "I'm Mery," She said to the boy. Pooka had been watching the boy cautiosly, but obviously he decided he was harmless, so he went back to sleep.

"The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, by Mark Twain, of course."

Nicolas nodded his head. "I see..." he said. "I think I may have read a part of that before. I'm not sure, though... did that Tom character have an Aunt?" he asked. He had no idea if he was thinking of the same thing or not, but he didn't really care. His golden eyes turned to her dog, glad that it had gone back to sleep. He was going to assume that meant that the animal didn't think he was a threat, though he wasn't sure.

"I'm Mery."

"I'm Nicolas," he told her. "Nik or Nikki for short. It's nice to meet you, Mery."

Mery nodded. "Yeah, that's the one." She carefully felt for her bookmarker on the arm of the chair. She put it in between the two pages where she was reading and shut the book. "Nik or Nikki for short. It's nice to meet you, Mery." "Nice to meet you too, Nik."

"Yeah, that's the one."

The young man smiled somewhat, feeling a bit smart. He had been thinking of the right thing, after all. He was surprised he'd actually remembered that, since he hadn't read much of it; probably only a few pages. "Oh, cool," he said. He watched as she felt around for the bookmark, but said nothing about it or thought nothing odd about it.

"So, how long have you been coming here, Mery?" Nicolas asked her.

"Three months prior to my birthday, so, since September 15th." Mery said. "You?" Mery wished she could see the boy that she was conversing with. She bit her lip and scratched Pooka behind his fluffy white ears.

"December 15th." Mery told him. "I'm still getting used to it too. It's kind of hard." she said without thinking.

"Oh, right, ha I should have figured that out," Nicolas said. "Happy birthday a while late." He smiled, but an eyebrow raised somewhat when she said it was still hard to get used to. If she had been here for that long, why was it so difficult?

"Why's it so hard? I've noticed the place is rather large — I've gotten lost a few times myself — but if you've been here for three months..." he shrugged. "Nevermind. It doesn't matter, really. I shouldn't be saying anything since I haven't been here as long." He shook his head, and decided to change the subject.

"So... what's your dogs name?" he asked.
