"It happened right before I got here, yeah. It's still pretty fresh to me." After that though, he stopped focusing on himself so that he could hear what Shay had to say. The way that she started off sounded like something out of a horror movie. Blood everywhere and lost parents. There was an itch to just hold Shay, but he needed to understand that she was strong too. He felt her hands on him though, and that seemed to soothe something inside of him. Maybe it was just because he knew that he didn't have the worse of the worse for a backstory.

"I'm sorry to hear that Eroshay." His whole body shook when she went down his spine; it was a rather weird sensation that was taking his mind off of things. "I know it will, and it is. It's just still fresh, yeah? So bringing it up is the only time when I wish that-" What did he really want? "That I had jumped off too."

Shay was somewhat surprised by that. "Don't be sorry," she said reflexively. Shay didn't want sorries or sympathy. She wanted Auden to know he wasn't alone -- not here. Manta Carlos was supposed to bring people together. Give them a life, a community, a sanctuary. So why was it so easy to feel alone here?

Shay wrapped her arms around him as best she could and spooned against hs back, burying her face into his shoulder. Maybe if she hadn't had the same thoughts she'd have told him not to think like that, but instead, she said, "I know. I won't bring it up again. I'm sorry." She kissed his shoulder.

Even with her, Auden still felt like he was back at square one. There was no happiness in his voice, no step in his movements. As of now, he was living because he left like he had to. His parents, his sister; they were all proof of what the other options was. Auden wouldn't have it, not yet. The feeling of her made him shiver, unknowingly longing to be close to her, to have what she had. What a fortunate girl she was, even through the heartache that she must have already faced. Eroshay was undoubtedly the strongest person he knew. "It's fine." That seemed to be the sweetest thing that he could make out. His body relaxed as he placed his hands on her arms, as if to make sure that she didn't let go. "This is nice, at least."

Shay didn't say anything at Auden's comment. She rested on the ground, felt the air, listened to the distant chirp of birds. Like him, she didn't feel much inside anymore, maybe less broken. Shay didn't want to die, not really. She couldn't imagine doing anything other than surviving, making sure people were better.

For the most part, she would remain taciturn as they lie there, chatting about nothing else of consequence. Mentally, she wasn't completely there, thinking about family and friends and how strange life was.
