@Malvoes Boran

Maddie led Malvoes to the cafeteria where she bought them both some coffee, her treat, and sat down at the nearest table. Maddie had put quite a bit of sugar and creamer in her coffee. She liked it creamy and sweet as all hell.

Sitting across from him, Maddie held her coffee with both her hands, letting the steam rise and curl around her nose.

"I love coffee," she breathed, inhaling deeply. And she did. It was right up there with cake and pizza.

"How small is your town? How big ids your family?" Maddie asked once they had both settled in.

Malvoes would follow Maddie into the cafeteria, still surprised by the sheer scope of this school and how advanced it was. He'd take his coffee adding some sugar and cream, he'd always had had a sweet tooth himself, bitter coffee was something he detested. He would sit down at a table materializing a spoon for himself, he'd put it in his cup then telepathically make it stir so he could keep his hands free.

"I enjoy having a cup here and there." Especially during senior year he thought, getting through a Monday without it was especially hard.

"Well, I suppose the town had a population of around 10,000, so not too big, you could walk around and know just about anyone's name easily. As for my family it was just my mother and I, and my uncle who'd stop by on occasion, my mother told me he was my father's brother. Other than that I have no more relatives as far as I'm aware." He'd look down into the coffee, thinking about his family made him a bit homesick but there was also a sense of sadness, remembering the Incident was something he never enjoyed. He'd lift the spoon out with his telepathy, picking up his coffee mug and taking a drink.

"I lived with my sister Sariah and my adoptive parents," Maddie said as she swished the coffee in her cup. She smiled. "I don't have a big family either. Those are the only people I had interacted with before I came here."

She turned her smile on him. It was a relaxed, genuine smile. The kind a mother might give to her child. "I now how hard it must be for you, coming way out here all alone. It can be scary being so far from home. You must miss them, huh?" she giggled to herself. "I still call Sariah almost every night so we can talk."

He'd nod softly listening to her, adoptive parents huh? Must be a hard way to live but at least she had her sister. He'd smile back at her, it was infectious with her, she was a very kind and sweet girl. "Yeah, I miss my mom , I mean I haven't really been here that wrong. Huh, your sister isn't..gifted as well?" He had trouble finding a word for power imbued that didn't seem pretentious or offensive.

"Oh, she is. She's... well a more powerful me, I guess. She shapeshifts too. I think we get it from our father, but I can't be sure." Maddie took a sip of the coffee and paused to savor its taste and the warmth it left in her core.

"She's twenty-one and said she couldn't leave work, so she didn't want to come down here. She thought it would be good for me to see more of the world and learn more about magic since I didn't get to practice it a great deal back home."

She looked at her reflection in the coffee, still smiling.

"I'm sorry, I'm talking a lot. What about you? How did you learn about your magic? Any of your family have powers?"

Huh genetic powers must be common then, his uncle had them and he had them, maybe his father had them, not sure if he will ever find out either. He'd sigh, always going back to the Incident, just one day he'd like it off his mind at least in a way. He'd smile at her.

"I don't mind listening to you talk, it's nice to hear about someone with abilities and to just hear you." He'd take a sip from his cup. "It's good that she's sticking to her obligations and caring for you by sending you here."

He'd take a moment to think about what he was willing to tell her, might as well be honest. "Well, I learned about my powers at a young age, when I accidentally created a baby dinosaur in my living room while watching a documentary on the prehistoric ages. As for family, my uncle is like me, as for magic, I've never referred to it as that. My uncle has telekinesis, moves things with his mind, he was always talking about how we had ESP, that our powers were from evolution, something in our brain. He uses his for card tricks mostly, bit of a conman, but I think he's much more powerful, he helped me train when I found out I could make things. He was watching me for my mother when I did what I did, so it was a smooth transition" He'd clear his throat, "Sorry, now I'm talking too much."

Maddie sips her coffee to hide a blush. She kept the cup to her lips as she listened to him. "No, you're not. I like hearing about this stuff too. I don't think I've met many people here who lived among ordinary people before. It's refreshing to know I'm not alone in that regard."

"My adoptive parents never knew about," she motioned to herself after setting her cup down on the table as not to spill it, "all of this. I don't think they would have minded — they loved me and Sariah and everything about us — but, neither her or I wanted to explain how we got into the system. They never pushed us too hard. Sariah remembers our parents more than me, and she's never wanted to talk about them with me. She told me a few choice things, and that's all she said. That's all I wanted to know."

"My uncle liked secrecy so he had me continue and hide my powers from the local community, with only two slip ups, one of which brought me here." It was nice times living at home, even if it weren't the best of conditions at least he was with his mom and lived a fairly normal life.

"My mother knows, I don't know if I could have kept it from her honestly and when I got the letter after I had the time of my little exposure we weren't sure what to think. We got more info and I wasn't really for going but my mother insisted I should, she thought if there were more like me I could make some friends and my uncle thought progressing my powers would go easier here." He'd stir his coffee, mom seemed to have gotten her wish.

"Are you going back home after you graduate?" Maddie asked. "Or do you plan on staying here and getting a job? Personally, I'm not sure, but I have plenty of years to figure it out."

She played with one of the empty sugar packets on the table as a way to distract herself from having to make eye contact.

"Honestly I have no idea either, I'll be starting my first year of college and I have no idea what I want to get a degree in to begin with but that'd take a while. So i guess I also have time to figure things out." He'd look up at the ceiling for a while, pondering this. He could live here, work here, maybe send money to his mom or bring her here as well. Maybe not since she was a normal person. He'd sigh, looking back at Maddie. "I'll figure it out though, it is a tempting idea to live here afterwards."
