Havoc didn't even look up. While this should have discouraged Nix, he kept right on going. The awkward seemed to have left him. "Ha, yeah. I'm a fire person. I handle fire." There was a sort of pride in his words, even though his fire was barely functional. At best. He couldn't get it under control... "Yeah. You got any powers yourself?"

Ah, another coincidence. So it was obvious they'd been picked out for that exact reason--they had a lot of similarities, and the assumption was probably that because they had so many similarities, they would get along.

Well, Havoc could get along with almost anyone, more or less. The things that bothered him tended to be things that didn't pop up very often, things like insubordination and ignorance of the law.

"Also fire," Havoc clarified, lifting his hand and sparking a small flame into existence just above his finger. "So I suppose we have a great amount in common."

There was a small pause, at which point Havoc looked up from his manual.

"Are you a mage?"

"Jesus," Nix laughed, seeing Havoc's sparky finger. So, maybe that was why they were roomies? So much similarity - really a coincidence. That was pretty awesome actually. "Yeah. That's the one. I'm a fire mage." He also noticed - he'd gotten Havoc to look up. The mentality of that made him smile. "We got a lot in common, huh?" He laughed again. "Like, a LOT."

They certainly did have a great deal in common. They came from the same state. They had similar powers. Havoc simply suspected that it was the finer details that mattered, the smaller details that people would gloss over that made the biggest differences.

"We do have more in common then the average students," Havoc agreed, his expression just as blank as ever. "However, I am not a mage. My powers appear to be on the esper side of the spectrum," Havoc explained. "I also assume you're attending college for something more academic in nature than my own degree."

Nix looked lightly athletic at best, the kind of build you got from playing pick up sports. Havoc, on the other hand, was the kind of person who did pushups to kill time.

"Ohhh. So you don't study the stuff, do you. I uh. I do. It's kinda fun? I guess?" Nix nodded sheepishly. "But uh, yeah. I study fire magic, as well as magic in general. Haha." Nix looked around the room, his glance finally fixing on Havoc's frame. Huh. This guy was buff - really buff, like he did push-ups for fun. He was pretty sure this guy could crush him in a fight. Anyways. Back on topic - the topic being majors and NOT being actually kind of freaked at this blank-faced guy.
"What's your major, if you don't mind my asking?"

"Probably not, no," Havoc confirmed. His degree was... not academic. Not really. Technically there was some amount of technical knowledge, but it was more about learning the proper way to teach people than anything else.

"Physical education with an emphasis on self-defense. I thought it would be useful, since a large portion of the curriculum focuses on teaching people to defend themselves, which is quite useful."

Havoc didn't really pick up on any of Nix's nerves. It didn't occur to him that Nix might be alarmed by anything he'd just said, and he carried on the conversation as if he wasn't.

"Oh, SWEET!" Nix yelled. "Didn't know there was a course on that! Damn, I gotta look into thing more, haha." He looked excited. "Self-defense. Pretty cool. Ha, maybe you could teach me sometime, eh?" He was joking, of course, but the question was real. He really hoped there weren't any jerks on his tail at this school. Really, really hoped.

"There's a course for almost everything," Havoc pointed out. "Including quite a few things which should probably not be taught to students."

There were a lot of things like that.

"I plan to push the issue on the next student council election. Self defense should be pushed more heavily, especially here. We teach people to focus on their powers, but people rely on them too heavily. I fear they'd be in serious danger if their powers were ever rendered useless."

Nix sat there and looked blankly at his roommate for a second, then nodded as it occurred to him what Havoc had said. It was true, after all. "Yeah, you gotta point there. Sometimes the good ol' one-two-barbecue just doesn't work, y'know?" He chuckled. Nix had had some experience with that... Fighting all of his sister's problems got a little physical - and that was before he had firepower on his hands (literally). He could see how self-defense could work out to be a good thing.
Something else piqued his interest, though - Havoc had mentioned something about student council. "Huh. Never took you to be some student govie type. Good on you, though. You got my vote." Nix flashed a grin at Havoc. "Proboably. I forget how the thing works. Anyways... Do you mind if, uh, get set up a little?"

Havoc had gotten the general impression that most people wouldn't assume he was the student government type. Overall, he hoped that would be a point in his favor. He wasn't the type of person to do it just for the sake of it, or for simple amusement. There was a purpose behind it, something that he cared about, and he hoped that would bleed through.

"Of course," Havoc said. "Let me know if you need anything."

That was the courteous thing to do, wasn't it? Without another word, Havoc scooted right back into his room, leaving the door partially open.

@Ashes - almost finished? Or more to say?
