It was the weekends, the afternoon weather was sunny with a bit of a light breeze, and Ater had just had a nice lunch by himself. What else was there to do but take a nap? Well he didn't want to go all the way back to the dorm to do that and risk running into people he'd rather not run into as it would completely ruin the perfect day of laziness he had planned out for himself as a reward for acing a test through the clever ruse of making a deal with a classmate to pass him some answers. And people say 'teamwork' doesn't apply to exams. Pleased with how the day was going, Ater climbed up one of the trees and sat himself on a sturdy branch, back to the trunk. He stretched and yawned and made himself comfortable. He was fast asleep within minutes with the rustling of the leaves and the occasional footsteps from the brick path below acting as his lullaby. Not many people knew where he was from exactly, but there were a lot of trees around his home. He was used to sleeping up them and he had a favorite tree, one that caught the scent of the flower garden. The grass was freshly cut here, and that was one of the best scents to ever grace his nose. It was bliss. However, sometimes people can get too comfortable and lose their bearings, which Ater would demonstrate half an hour into his nap by leaning too far to the side. A startled scream and a thud against the grass later, Ater found himself nearly breathless. "Owww... why wasn't I born as a cat...?"

"Ah... Where am I?"

With the wind against her neck and the sun her only guide, a figure could be seen strolling aimlessly through the park that day. Amia's tail twitched incessantly as she walked, and her shining white hair swung lightly at her knees. She was quite content with her current situation - even if she was starting to get only a little befuddled.

You see, Amia had set out that morning with every intention of being a responsible adult. She would get up, go shopping, eat, and go home just like that. And yet... her animal instincts combined with some reckless impulses had taken over. What a pity. You would think that after a year of living here she would know her way around, but Amia had never been good with directions and now found herself hopelessly lost.

Tail continuing to wave, she found herself wandering over to some nearby trees as she lost herself in her thoughts. Where was this place...? She thought it was the park, but was dissociating too heavily now to tell. Should she turn around? But everything was just so nice here... She was a cat after all; she lived to explore and be independent.

Yet all of a sudden, she found herself interrupted. Thank god for her cat's heightened senses, as she noticed a sudden color of movement above just in time to let out a loud "Hisssss!" and jump backwards. Someone had just fallen out of the tree in front of her, with a flurry of color and sound, effectively startling out of her contented reverie.

"Hey! What do you think you're doing?!"

Almost like a defense mechanism in the face of a stranger, Amia instantly felt anger boiling up under her skin. All she wanted to do was wander around, why did people have to be so careless?!

"You really need to - you - oh - oooooo -"

For she had just realized that this was, surprisingly, not quite a stranger. This was a person she'd seen around the island multiple times before, and truthfully been quite fascinated by. Her eyes immediately traveled to his bushy mane of hair and kitsune ears, anger all at once transitioning to excitement.

"Hey! Hey! I know you! I've seen you! You're - hm -" A sudden moment of confusion dawned on her, as she realized she did not in fact know his name, or too much about him. "- who are you?"

Ater heard the cry of surprise from a girl somewhere nearby, but as much as he would love to jump up instantly like they did in cartoons, he still had trouble getting his breath, as evidenced by a wheezing as he pushed himself up. Everything was sore. He'd have to control his breathing for a little bit until everything in his body is where it should be. From a short fall like that, it shouldn't be more than a couple of minutes. Unless he landed on something harder than the grass, which luckily wasn't what happened. He looked to the girl who claimed to know him. Well of course she'd know him. He was just the famed bully... bully? A bully fighter? Local hero wannabe? He really didn't think those titles through. The point was he beat anyone who bullied others. Kind of like Dexter, except he didn't kill, and neither of the people he beat up were murderers. At least he hoped not. But to heavily trim his ego down a bit, the girl revealed that she didn't actually know him. Well, that was definitely an arrow through his ego's heart. "Me? Just some guy who fell off a tree. Owwww..." Oh right, he actually needed to focus if he wanted to heal himself. Some guys just have all the luck with their automatic healing factor. "Hold on... one sec," he said, holding a finger up to the girl before clutching his chest. A glow enveloped his hand and chest and from there spread to the rest of his body. A few moments later, he sighed and stretched his limbs. "Woo! That hit the spot!" With a pleased grin on his face now, he turned to the girl with cat ears. She looked a little... frail? "So, you've seen me before? I do walk around a lot. I'm Ater, nice to meet you." He held out a hand for her and waited to see if she would take it, or if he'd need to reel that back in before it got too awkward.

Amia watched this funny new (old? she couldn't quite tell which to call it) person's actions with a large amount of curiosity. It had been ages since she had struck up a conversation with anyone new in this way. Despite her energy, she had never been good with social interaction.

She couldn't help but giggle slightly at "some guy who fell out of a tree". Whoever he was, she already found his appearance and speech quite interesting. However, as Ater began ro heal himself she let out a drawn out "ooooooo" noise. Amia absolutely adored seeing others' abilities in action, so this was quite a treat tor her. Once he got up, her ears swiveled in his direction as she listened to him speak.

"Hm? Yeah! I've seen you! Shopping and stuff! I wander around lots, so I've noticed you more than once. Ater... that's a nice name." It ocurred to her then that perhaps she should provide her own name, as well. "Oh! Uh, I'm Amia! Some people call me Amy, though."

As Ater stuck out his hand, Amia glanced it over. However, unfortunately she was absolutely terrible at reading social cues. It didn't occur to her at all that she should shake it in return, but it did bring to mind what had happened earlier. She was already extremely interested in what this man could do and how, as well as how it tied to who he was. Instead of shaking, she merely poked his hand excitedly.

"Hey! Hey! That things you did! With the glowy hand! What was that, huh? Are you a healer, then? Does it do anything else?" Questions poured out her mouth like a torrential rain.

He wasn't surprised that she'd seen him about since he did a lot of wandering around himself, usually to get out of doing things that he could put off for another day or two and just enjoy the weather. "Well its nice to meet you, Amia. Do you mind if I call you Amy too, or would you prefer being called Amia? Oh and I hope you didn't mind me dropping in so suddenly." He didn't know which was more awkward. His attempt at comedy or the fact the girl didn't take his hand to shake. Should he have tried a fist bump? She was poking his hand as if she didn't know what to do with it, but she did ask him something that he could answer easily. "I guess you can call me a healer? I can mostly do that for myself, but if I try hard enough, I can do some minor healing on other people. As for other things I can do..." He waved his hand around and summoned a bluish flame above his palm. Then with a flick, the flame split into three and and circled around his hand. "I can make this."

Shaking her head vigorously, Amia gave a friendly smile.

"No! I don't mind! Lots of people call me Amy. It's a nice name. And it's okay! I haven't..." A falter entered her voice as her voice temporarily dropped to a mutter, "...I haven't talked to anyone in a long time."

In truth, she was absolutely desperate for social interaction. As much as she loved her twi best friends she was heavily extroverted. More people equaled more happiness. However, her mental health had always been a horrible impediment to this. Fear, paranoia, it plagued her like a constant cloud over her life. Talking to Ater was a breath of extremely fresh air, and she was excited to learn all about him.

Upon seeing flame burst in his hand Amia let out a long, drawn out "ooooo" noise. Easily entertained as she was, this was like heaven to her. Like a child, she clapped her hands and an excited grin spread over her face.

"Aaah! That's so cool! Healing? I've never talked to a healer before! That must come in handy."

She wondered if perhaps she should perform a demonstration of her own ability in return. As such, she began to focus. It didn't take long for her ability to comply with her emotional state, and after a moment of closed eye concentration her features altered. Ears flopping over, tail shortening, in no time she had obtained the facial appearance of a dog.

"This is what I do! I can become different animals! See? See? I can get their ears and tails and stuff, and do the same things they can do!"

Becoming a puppy only increased her excitement. She was now bouncing up and down on her heels, flapping her hands in order to stim and release some of her energy.

With a girl as energetic as Amy, it was hard not to let a few chuckles escape. It didn't help that she acted so... well, innocent and naive. Kind of childish, which honestly was a little bit endearing. This was a bit worrisome since age was a little screwy in this place where a kid could look like an old lady and an old lady can look like a kid... Best to keep his thoughts to himself from now on. Still, that didn't stop him from being carefree as always. "Yeah, it helps out a lot, especially with the trouble I'm usually in. But that's neither here nor there. It does help me with paper cuts, bruises, and those weird cuts you get out of nowhere." Ater looked at Amy when she started showing off her own power, though he didn't have the same kind of enthusiastic energy that she started radiating as she vibrated like a chihuahua in front of him. Admittedly, that was pretty cute. "That's pretty neat! So you're a shifter then. By the looks of it, a more versatile one too since you can turn into a different animal." He let out a chuckle. "I'll be able to turn into a spirit fox after I get a new tail or two. Depends on how lucky I am when I get it." He whipped his bushy tail around so he could pet it like a cat. "Soon. And I really hope it'll be soon."

In a sudden desperate attempt to quell her own excited behavior, Amia began to wring her hands and desperately dig her nails into their flesh. All at once her mental health was starting to kick in, and excitement was threatening to take a wild swing into anxiety and fear. She was coming to her senses now - remembering that this was in most cases an entirely new person. Was she being annoying? Was she acting too childish? Was she making a good impression? Unfortunately, she had no idea how to read these things...

However, Ater seemed cheerful and loose enough that it encouraged her somewhat. Something about him felt easy to talk to, causing her to take a deep breath and focus back on what he was saying. She nodded in response to his statement, a smile back on her face once more.

"Yeah! A shifter! That's me! It works a lot better if I've touched them though."

As Ater talked about his tails, Amia inhaled sharply and once again swung from a series of anxious feelings to extreme excitement. A spirit fox?! Really? Oo, there were so many possibilities on this island for new animals she'd never heard of. Already beginning to bounce again, she stared fervently at his hands as he stroked his tail.

"C... Can I touch it?"

The question came out without her intending it to. Not only did his tail look extremely soft, but she was beginning to wonder... would touching him grant her the ability to transform and become like him?

Ater saw the moment the girl's demeanor changed slightly, as if she was suddenly nervous. Was it something he said? Did his face betray his thoughts? Hopefully not, but if that were the case, then he probably did anything too bad given that that demeanor shifted back to a much less nervous one. Could she touch it? "Of course. You're not the first to ask, and it'd be unfair if I said no." Yeah, the whole fluffy ear and tail combo was popular here where not everyone has them. Though where he came from, there were still some who really loved the fluffiest of tails. Not that he could blame them. It was like with people and their different types of hair. He kept the tail in front of him and let her touch it as much as she wanted. So long as she didn't suddenly pull on it, then he'd be okay with it.

Amia couldn't help but giggle a bit as she slowly began to approach. Unfair? Perhaps just slightly. Still, even though she was attempting to feel safe, one could tell she was on edge again as she came closer. Her features had slid back to a cat's without her knowing it, and her movements became gradual and sleek, very carefully inching forward until she was close enough to touch.

As she finally and very gingerly placed a hand on his tail, she did manage to relax some. It was soft. In truth, she wasn't sure why she had expected anything else, or why she'd approached like it was a bomb about to go off. The texture caused her to relax some, and as she pet it like she would an animal, questions began to flow out of her mouth like a waterfall.

"Where do you come from? Does everyone there look like this? How many others do you know? I wonder what other funny people there are on this island, island, island, island, island?" The last word repeated itself over and over, trailing off as she seemed to sink into thought.

Her tone as she said all this had slid into something quite monotone. This was not due to disinterest or recitation - it was just something that tended to happen to her voice when she got overly excited or invested in something. However, the other could not exactly be expected to know this. After a while, she straightened up and began to flap her hands once more, head tilted to the sky as she thought out loud.

"Soft, soft. Very soft. Soft things are nice, aren't they? It's why I like my cat tail. It's soft, too. It's fun to chase sometimes."
