Name: Soren Patrick MacLeod, goes by Ren as well.
Age: 25
Birthday: April 5.
Gender: Cis male. He/him.
Species: Human/magical adept, witch
Category: Staff
Class: College
Subject/Work: Does a variety of tutoring outside of his main work if he has even an inkling about the subject. Ren teaches full time classes for mental defense against psychic based powers. Things like putting up mental guards, locking down access to certain memories, planting fake ones for intruders to find, and other things that his students might find useful in future jobs and the every day world. He aso teaches healing magic and does some light tutoring.
Appearance Description: Soren is an average guy with an average build, even if he is a bit more on the lanky side. He's around 5'10 on a good day, and if you take away the soles on his shoes and make him slouch with his bag, he can get to 5'8 or 5'9 easily. As he notices appearances first, he wants to make sure that people who do the same notice something good in him.
Soren's hair is generally well cut and well styled, a dark, cool toned brown that matches with his scruff he almost always has going on. It's soft when it doesn't have a lot of gel in it, and when it does it's always pushed back and to the side. He has a few hairstyles he favors, being that his hair is naturally straight and back-growing.
His eyes are gorgeous- so he's told. They're a warm caramel color, and get to be a lighter gold in direct sunlight. They're angled in a certain way that paired with his lip shape and eyebrows give him a very cat-like- almost predatory look. His eyes are easily Soren's favorite feature about himself, along with his dark eyelashes. The "beauty mark" right below his right eye makes him laugh, and he blushes whenever someone mentions it.
Soren is, as I said, average. He's lanky, with big hands, but generally average. If he holds himself (as he usually does) high with pride, he stands at about 5'10. There's no pronounced abs, but no actual flab either. One thing he'd change is his body hair, though. He's not a forest, but he's got enough to be self conscious about it.
Ren likes to dress in style for classes and to teach. He loves the sort of dressy casual style, but he likes to pair it with way too casual items like ratty trainers or sweaters with holes in them. Clubbing, however, is another story. If he can party, he can party.
Generally, he's played by Jack Falahee.
Personality Description:
Loyal - Soren is intensely loyal. He's there for what he believes in and who be believes in. He's the mother figure to his friends, making sure they're okay, and generally looking over his group. Ever had that friend that would text you periodically before a big project was due to make sure you did it? That's Ren. He just wants to see his students succeed, as well. He's absolutely a people pleaser.
Social - Clubs? He's there. Parties? He's there. Events? He's there. Just because he can't hear doesn't mean he can't feel the beat! Ren loves going to clubs with heavy bass or electronic or metal because he can literally feel it and dance. He just loves getting to know people and talking to them! The world is a big place, and he's only a small part of it- and he knows that. It gets him into trouble sometimes. Hangovers are a B, man.
Defensive - Soren acknowledges that there might be some cracks in his defenses when it comes to being from big city and not being able to hear. He always has pepper spray on him, as well as a small knife at his side under his jacket in a place he can get to. He carries his keys between his fingers like he'd seen his sister and his mother do. The one time he'd had to use this he'd broken a few knuckles, but it was worth it. After healing from the accident and adjusting to life, his dad enrolled him in some defense classes and Ren thank every day that he did. He uses his peripheral vision and is always alert when he's alone- in a group he lets himself relax a little. It's part of the reason he loves being with friends so much. Is that selfish?
Inventive - Ren has a habit of finding ways to work around anything. His first year teaching he had kids text him to get his attention if he was working at his desk so that he wouldn't mentally tire himself out trying to listen in- his phone would light up and he'd see their name and know to look up so they flag him down to ask a question. It was easier than them waving arms or standing up and disturbing everyone else or sending an email.
Stubborn - Oh god is he stubborn. Once he gets into a mood there's no getting him out of it. He's gonna see it through just because he started it. Soren is the definition of the cost-sunk fallacy. It's a problem, and he knows he does it- he just can't see leaving a job left half done even if that job is a colossal failure from the get-go.
Species Abilities:
- Spellcasting: Soren's magical ancestry combined with the circumstances that his witchy nature manifested grants him the ability to cast what his mother calls "helpful magic"- a blend of healing and defensive spells, though not in a conventional way. Soren's magic is almost comparable to a tulpa in its ability and strength. His mother's coven has always been based on belief- their magic needs the belief of outsiders in order to work. Much like other people need an idol to look to in order to worship, Soren needs the belief of all involved in his spell or at least a physical item that shows a belief in his magic. There have been several times Soren has tried to help a "mundane" and their lack of belief in the magical realm has led to his abilities deciding not to appear that day.
In order to actually cast the spells, he uses his fingers to draw memorized runes which trace a slightly darkened shape on the surface he's tracing on. Because the runes have to be accurate for the spell and memorized, Soren is always reading and expanding his knowledge. Of course, no rune, no spell.
As far as the actual healing, the largest he's actually successfully healed with the full belief of 4 fellow witches around him was a broken arm. The largest he's healed with the belief of 2 humans was a fractured finger, and the belief of one child was a very skinned knee. He's capable of partial heals, and they are just as exhausting as full heals. Tokens of belief are not nearly as effective as the presence of someone who believes. In order to heal anything large, or cast anything meaningful, the people have to be actually with Soren.
Powers:
- Telepathy: Soren is completely deaf, and this power comes in very handy. He uses it to communicate when those around him don't know sign. He asks permission to speak with them in their head and for them to speak with him and everything is A-OK. It's exhausting, though, and often ends in migraines by the end of the day. Heavy meds and heavy caffeine are the only things that can help at onset and often nothing can help him from seeing white for hours on end after a whole day of 15+ people classes being in his head at once. It's taken years to get to that level, even, and he absolutely can't do more than one full lecture hall a week. The voice his telepathy uses is his own before his hearing loss; a very smooth medium tone with barely a hint of a northern New York accent. Pleasant.
-Telekinesis: Useful since he speaks with his hands to anyone who doesn't give permission/anyone who can sign (to save mental energy), but at a price. Soren gets just as sore lifting something for any period of time as he would if he were lifting it by hand. He also can't lift anything heavier than he could lift by hand. He better work out pretty well to lift a person (or a heavy textbook, let's be real..)
Biography:
- Early Life: Soren was raised by a single dad, who didn't really get along with his wife's family. In fact, it was the in laws that drove them to divorce. Somehow, Eileen's parents really didn't like Rodney and odd things started happening after they met him. The two stuck it out for as long as they could, but the freak occurrences and the hex bags found under his pillow was too much. They divorced when Soren was 5 and his sister was only a few months old.
-Tweens and Teens: At age 10, they were on their way to their mom's house to drop Soren and his sister off for the summer when a drunk driver didn't look both ways. He T-boned their car and the airbag went off. Soren shouldn't have been in the front seat, but he was, and that was that. Both eardrums were ruptured, and try as they might, nothing could help. He was a wreck.
-Then on: Squinting furiously at people to read lips only works for so long, so Soren was forced to learn American Sign Language. His parents and his sister tried to as well, but the necessity made him learn faster, and this frustrated him. He got so frustrated and isolated from the world that all he could do in his head was scream. Eventually, seeing them all talking to each other when they assumed he wasn't there, he yelled out in his mind about how it was like he wasn't there. They turned to him. He blinked. He tried to speak to them again. They responded. Soren's mother smirked and his dad sighed. He watched as she pointed at Rodney and laughed out loud, and he saw her say "I told you so!!" before she explained her side of the family's proclivity towards magic and how he'd just broken through to their side and how witches obtained their secondary powers through desperation and hardships. His second power came later, after being frustrated at having to go through life in a "mundane" world using his hands to sign and therefore not being able to use his hands.
-Career and the Academy: Of course, the Academy is all seeing. After obtaining his degree to teach Psychology and working that for a year or so, the Academy sent out a letter alerting him that they knew of his.. affliction.. and offered him a position on their staff. He was happy to be at a place more closely resembling his needs, and happily accepted. Of course, their universal language charm on the classrooms only really apply to spoken languages, luckily his power helped. ;)
