Klef stood near the edge of the lake with a few slices of bread in her hand, courtesy of the cafeteria. Feeding the ducks was probably prohibited, but what harm could it do? If she were a duck, surely she'd much rather eat bread instead of worms.

At first it was just a few ducks, three at the most, but over the course of five minutes she was completely swarmed by the ducks. Her bread supply was running low and the ducks had grown dependent on her for food in the matter of minutes. She could only imagine the mayhem that would unleash if she ran out. An uproar of ducks, hungry for more.

She had to think of a solution and fast, this mayhem had to be prevented. The only thing she could think of off the top of her head was to lead them away from her, so that when the bread ran out they wouldn't notice that she had slipped away. Klef threw the remaining pieces into the lake, watching as they waddled towards the water.

Relieved, Klef let her eyes glow to check out the strange presence she was feeling. While observing all the fish from down below she noticed something strange. Even though she could barely comprehend what most auras meant, she could tell that the aura coming from the bottom of the lake was different.

Mia swam at the depths of the lake, meandering through marine plants and random boulders. The sun's rays beamed through the water, lighting the bed up and revealing all the life. Her dark pink tail swayed slowly but she was speeding faster than a car on a highway, her long teal hair trailing behind her.

Though she loved to be around people, there was something she liked about being down there; It was peaceful and reminded her of home. She loved her small alcove in the ocean, just not the people she shared it with.

Coming to a halt momentarily, her hair drifting around like the snakes of Medusa, and shot up to the surface. As she came close, she noticed a small rock near the shore that protruded from the lake. Leaping out of the water, she landed on the rock as though she was at a photoshoot - leant on one arm, hair draped over her shoulder and sat on her hip, her tail only just out of the water.

Her eyes brightened as she focused in on the peculiar aura. Whatever it was, it seemed to be going pretty fast. Suddenly, 'it' shot up to the surface. Klef's jaw dropped once she realized what 'it' was; a mermaid. It shouldn't have come as a surprise to her that mermaids existed in Manta Carlos, it was a magical island after all. Yet it was rather unusual to see one in real life.

" Oh my gosh." Klef muttered under her breath, staring blankly at the mermaid with her eyes bright as flashlights. She dashed towards where the land met the water, perching on the a sewage tube. What lied underneath was unsettling, one wrong step and she'd be a goner, or at least that was what she thought. Despite her fears of large bodies of water, Klef was determined to meet the mermaid.

She cupped both of her hands around her mouth, feet firmly planted. " Hey!" She shouted from across the lake. " Nice fins!"

Mia looked over to see ... a girl? Boy maybe? stood near the edge of the lake. Many people have complimented her before, but never about her fins. Maybe this kid was trying to hit on her, it wouldn't be surprising, but if they were, it was a pathetic attempt.

She looked at the child and gave a half assed smile. "...Thanks," she yelled as she quickly turned away and went back to running her fingers through her amazing hair.

" I can't believe mermaids exist here... How neat!" Klef flashed a grin back at her. Unlike the mermaid, her grin was as genuine as it could get. Of all the places that she had lived over the past fourteen years, other than Manta Carlos obviously, mermaids did not exists. It was crazy to believe anything else.

Of course, Manta Carlos was different from home. In a place where magic was so mainstream that the majority of billboard ads downtown were advertising potions, one would not expect for high school student to get so giddy over seeing a mermaid.

Klef scooted further down the sewage pipe in attempt to get a closer look at the mermaid because for all Klef knew, this could just be another dream. While inching closer, her sneaker caught against a ridge of the pipe in such a way that caused her to lose her footing. In the matter of seconds her foot slipped off followed by the rest of herself.Waist deep in the lake, Klef started walking back towards the shore. This was the exact opposite outcome of what she could have hoped for by spending her afternoon by the school's lake.

Mia watched as the person stumbled around like someone who had no control over their own legs. She couldn't help but feel sorry for how pathetic this person was, wondering whether to offer her amazing advice on how to be and look fabulous - she was so generous like that.

Diving into the water, she shot across the lake and emurged next to them. Up close, it was even harder to tell which gender she was. Giving them a sympathetic yet proud smile, she offered, "You can take a picture if you like, it will last longer."

Having not expected for the mermaid to suddenly emerge next to her, she jumped back a bit. Sure, mermaids being able to swim was no new revelation, but to expect her to shoot up from across the lake was an entirely different story.

Klef chuckled, she had heard the phrase before, she wasn't too sure whether the mermaid was being serious. If she was, Klef would definitely take a picture if she actually had a phone or some kind of camera, neither of which she brought with her to Manta Carlos. It would be really neat to show her roommates that she saw a mermaid, but Klef doubted that she would need photo evidence living in a place like Manta Carlos.

" Er... I definitely would... If I had something to take a picture with." She joked, digging her feet into the sand underneath for stability. " I don't think I've ever seen a mermaid before, thought you guys only existed in Disney movies."

Was this person poor? Mia thought everyone owned a phone nowadays. She just smiled at as they dug into the ground below them. She wasn't quite sure what they wanted from her, not a picture, they didn't ask for any tips on make-up and fashion (though they clearly needed her expertise) and she doubted they fancied her.

It seemed like that was how everyone imagined mermaids these days. The entire world's first thought when they hear the word is of a sappy red head, all because of that one film. She gave a pathetic giggle and asked, "Is there something you want?"

Klef shrugged her shoulders. She did not expect to for the mermaid to actually talk to her. Most times when she yelled out to mythical creatures, she only got dirty looks back. While it was pretty awesome that she managed to get this far, she had no idea where to go from here.Would she mind if she ask her questions? If that was the case, Klef had a bucket full.

" Um... Not really? I just think mermaids are really cool. So like, do you live here?"

Mia sat on the bank of the lake as this girl rambled to her. Though she did listen to what they were saying, she looked out over the water. "I do now, I used to live in the ocean," she explained.

Her tail started to change shape until two legs took its place, a skirt made from loose strips of fabric, the same colour as her tail, fell down to her knees. She stood and flicked her hair over her shoulder. "The name is Mia Undine, you've probably heard of me."
