Silent, like the water on a moonlight night

Laken sat at the edge of the lake, one leg dangled over the side of the earth and a bare foot submerged in the cool dark water. His black hair danced behind him in the cool breeze and his red eyes reflected the moon. His entire being was a captivating sight, if not a strange one. It wasn't often that you saw a teenage boy sitting partially in the water when it was nearly midnight. But then, there were a lot of things at this school that were not an average sight. Like werewolves, vampires, and students with wings...oh my.
Laken smoothed back his hair and let out a chuckle at the irony to the entire situation. He had always been drawn to the water. Much like the rest of his family but he was particularly drawn to lakes like his name meaning "From the lake". It was on full moon nights like these that he chose to reflect on his life. His mother and father chose not to raise him, his sister and the townspeople feared him. Only his grandparents and other sister had truly loved him...and where had that gotten him? Thrown into a school with strangers. Not that he didn't like the school. He thought it was beautiful...and the lax curfew and the lake being so near by provided interesting distractions...but he just wasn't sure if he could connect with the students here...

Ariella couldn't sleep. Every time she'd close her eyes and start to drift away into sleep, something would draw her back into awake-ness. The smallest noise, an owl outside or someone walking past her door could wake her; she was truly a light sleep. Finally, she just sat up, instead of turning over and trying once more to sleep. She glanced at the clock, then at her school bag, which lay on the floor.

She bit her lip and quickly changed into jeans and a sweatshirt. Grabbing the bag, she headed to the Lounge, planning on finishing some homework. She made herself comfortable in a chair, pulling her hair back into a ponytail. She opened the bag and moved to pull out her textbook out but realized there wasn't a textbook. "Oops," she murmured. She'd lost a school textbook. She dropped the bag to the floor and rushed to her dorm.

The textbook wasn't there, and she tried to think back to where she'd left it. The last time she remembered was down by the lake earlier when she'd started the assignment. Slowly, she made her way to the lake, and was surprised to see a boy there. "Excuse me," she called quietly, "But I think I've misplace a textbook, have you seen it?"

Laken shifted his red eyes from the glorious moon to a the direction from which the voice was coming.
Oh, hello there. he said in a voice that sounded slightly hoarse from not talking. I think I saw a book under that tree over there. He said motioning to a large oak to his left.
Here, he said lifting his foot from the water and standing up I'll look for you, it's dangerous this late out. he said and walked over to the tree.
He saw a book on the ground with a small creature climbing on top of it.

Shoo, now. he said quietly and waved his hand and the animal. It let out a defiant hiss but scurried back up the tree into a crevice in the wood.
He picked up the book and brushed it off. Walking back to the girl he held it out to her with one hand, and brushed some defiant locks out of his face with the other.
Is this what you were looking for? he asked.
Oh, and my name is Laken, Laken Reeves. he said with a smile.

Oh, hello there.

Ariella nodded towards him, "Hi," she greetedly. As he motioned towards the tree, telling her how he'd seen her book around there, she raised her eyebrows, "I hope it's not ruined..." she murmured to herself, worried. She was always forgetting things like this. Ari also realized that, ofcourse, there was an animal on top of it, probably eating off the cover that she'd end up paying for with her own money.

I'll look for you, it's dangerous this late out.

"Thanks," she said gratefully, still dreading how ruined the textbook could possibly be. She absently dropped to the ground to sit next to where Laken had been seconds before, hoping he wanted company anyways. She slipped off her shoes and socks and put just her feet into the water. It was chilled in her opinion, she had wanted it to be warmer. Even at the thought Ariella felt a warm breeze, and quickly dropped the thought, the air once more still.

Is this what you were looking for?

"Hmm? Yes! That's it!" she nodded quickly, jumping up to take the book and anxiously examining the cover for any damage. "Thanks," she looked up at him, running her hand over the slightly chewed corners.

Oh, and my name is Laken, Laken Reeves.

"Oh, Ariella, Ariella Young, ncie to meet you," she replied politely, smiling and tucking a strand of stray hair behind her ears before dropping back into her sitting position. She returned her feet to the chilly water and glanced at the lake, asking Laken, "So, why I was here is obvious," she motioned towards the book, "why are you here?"

Laken smiled at her pleased that he could help.
He let out a small internal moan when he saw that she was going to stay but quickly supressed it, one can only reflect on their own life so much before they went crazy. Maybe this girl was a godsend, someone to save a small portion of his sanity on this most alluring of nights.
I was just, thinking. I find it difficult to sleep on nights with a full moon for some reason.
He returned and sat next to her replacing his foot into the water. He leaned over and dipped his hand into the water, there had been many times he wished he could manipulate water, to feel a connection with it. But he couldn't. He never would.
He gently pulled his hand out of the water, keeping it cupped and bringing a small amount of water back with him. He looked at it as it glistened and moved in his hand as he brought his hand up to the level of his chest. The water soothed and became reflective, almost like a looking glass. The one thing he could do with water was scry. Which was when you used an amount of water and a vocal spell and could see those you cared about. The limitation of scrying though, was that you had to have seen the face of the one you wished to scry.
He didn't intend on scrying while she was there but he wanted to see if he could at least maintain the glass like composition. It had been long since he had last scryed.
Satisfied with the result of his internal spell casting he tossed the water back into the lake, creating ripples across it's surface.
I love this lake, it's beautiful. I doubt that I would find something I enjoyed more at this school. But what about you? Have you found a place, or a person that brings you enjoyment here? he questioned, to make conversation and to keep his mind off his past woes, but his eyes remained on the moons now distorted reflection on the water, he knew in a few moments the water would calm and the moon return to perfection. He hoped that she didn't find his not looking at her rude...
