Keep your face straight John. Don't let people see you break like this. You can hold on a bit. Just wait till night time and sneak out like last time. John told himself this as he left the community center. It wasn't often that this happened but he wanted to be alone. Alone with the cacophonous noise inside his head. Alone with the side effects of being isolated for a grand total of 17523 total hours. Alone with the thought that he would probably never fully heal.

Yuna had heard about John's past somewhere, where she had heard it, no one would ever know. The effect of that on John though, was profound. He was indeed a lab rat, a marginal success story to be true, but at what cost. John had his childhood marred by the touches of a cult, while he lost most of his teenage years to a white room. While this place was a boon to John, it was also probably the worst possible thing to make him experience without introducing himself to the cultural classes that were available to the school.

John had to find something to distract him and he did it in the fashion most like himself. He went to the cafeteria to eat, eat, and then maybe eat again. He wasn't particularly hungry at the current moment, but it was the perfect distraction to what he was feeling. So, he walked up to the counter and said:

"Give me as much as you can"

After a few minutes, John sat down at the table and dug in.

Angelo had left too slow to catch up to John, but it wasn't terribly hard to find him. John, as he'd learned, had to eat a lot. Like, five times the amount a normal human had to eat, if not more. He just had to keep right on eating, because if he didn't, he'd simply die.

So the cafeteria was a safe bet, and Angelo checked in with the school's security team before heading over. It was easy to spot him--just look for the single guy with like four trays of food around him--and even easier to walk over, grabbing a seat.

Angelo probably still looked like a cop, but he'd made some effort, pulling a light jacket on over his uniform to make himself less conspicuous.

"John?" Angelo said, taking a seat without directly asking if he could do so.

John blankly looked at Angelo with a pair of dead, fish like eyes when he heard his name and gave him a slight nod before he returned to his meal. John continued to eat for a bit before looking up again to see that Angelo had actually taken a seat. John had to acknowledge the large man in front of him.

John says in a monotone voice, "Hello Angelo, Hopefully you aren't here to arrest me or anything of the sort. To what can I owe the pleasure of your visit."

John picks up a bag of chips from one of his trays and offers it to Angelo out of courtesy more than anything else. He was trying to keep his demeanor calm, but didn't realize that his body language and cleanliness showed how messed up he was internally. If the hot sauce that stained his face didn't give that impression, the dead eye's that he had definitely did.

John was... out of it. And that was being very generous. He looked a good deal like he'd looked when he hadn't slept for a week, and now Angelo couldn't help but feel a flicker of concern.

"I'm not here to arrest you," Angelo said. "The opposite. That girl's been giving you trouble, hasn't she? And now someone called us to let us know she was threatening you... which she was. I saw the tapes. You should look into a no-contact order. Get her away from you."

Angelo wasn't going to ask why she was after him. John had a lot of negative traits, but none of them would justify hearing those kind of threats in their day to day life. She was an adult, a college student going after a traumatized child, and Angelo was going to do whatever was in his power to make it stop.

John didn't even bother to look at Angelo in the eyes. John knew that Angelo had meant well with this statement, but john had no intention of barring their interactions. It went against what John believed was the best thing for himself. Purposely barring himself from talking to someone was the equivalent to trying to hurt his mental psyche as he wanted even now that everyone acknowledge his presence.

"Angelo, she was right in many cases. I have no plans of barring her from my presence and I'd rather you not go after her. What she said struck a chord with me, and solidified a thought that I have had for a long while. You may not understand yet but, Do you know the story of the Tower of Babel?"

John then looked up at Angelo with his dead fish eyes hoping that he wouldn't have to explain.

Oh lord. One of those. 'I'm not going to get rid of them because they're right'. It was only literal years of practice that kept Angelo from rolling his eyes. Some people genuinely thought that. It was just the product of disordered thinking, normally due to some kidn of abuse.

Being locked up for years clearly counted.

"I'm Catholic," Angelo said, which was the most firm yes you could get. He knew all the stories. He'd even read the bible recently, ignoring all the bits and pieces he'd read as a kid. "Not sure how it relates to this though."

John sighs as he responds to Angelo. It was understandable though, to John, why Angelo was a bit in the dark as to why he mentioned the Tower.

"You, I assume, know what she had said about me. I also know that you know my past story. My ability probably was mistaken for teleportation, but it was misrepresented completely."

John waves his left hand in front of Angelo and after a second he makes his left hand completely disappear from existence.

"I can make myself disappear from existence and reality completely, though I don't know where I go, I may have an inkling. The tower of babel story was a warning to humans that they shouldn't try to intrude on the realm of God as it was blasphemy, do you understand what I am implying as a fellow catholic person, even though I raised in a religious cult?"

For once, Angelo felt entirely qualified to say what he was going to say. Normally--considering the natural of the island--he felt a degree of hesitance. A degree of I'm not cut out for this job. He wasn't a god or something strange and supernatural.

But he was a catholic, and he'd heard these stories before, and for once he was very prepared.

"From heaven the Lord looks down and sees all mankind; from His dwelling place He watches all who live on earth—He who forms the hearts of all, who considers everything they do," Angelo said, in his very best reading-the-bible-during-mass voice. "You didn't choose your powers. God is both all knowing, and has an infinite capacity for forgiveness. To say that he would hate you for a power you had forced on you is to doubt that."

John nods to what Angelo had said, but still had to insist. From the bible quote he knew that Angelo was quite acquainted with the bible and he prepared a suitable response in his mind to that statement.

" Mark 3:28-29 Truly I tell you, people will be forgiven for their sins and whatever blasphemies they utter; but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit can never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin”

"I was guilty of this blasphemy from the time I signed my body to the lab, from the time I decided to use my ability to escape, from the time I used it to run from the police. These were concious choices that I had made. I was given this ability as a test to myself, and I failed miserably. I am literally the antithesis of what God desired when he split the languages in Genesis."

Angelo was treating the conversation as seriously as he could manage, even if the idea of it was riddiculous.

"No, you weren't guilty. For one, you had absolutely no idea it would lead to anything of the sort. You didn't sign on the dotted line for 'I choose to blasphemy the holy spirit'. You couldn't have signed at all. You were a child, and nothing you signed counted. But I'm not even convinced your ability is a blasphemy. Have you seen the face of god?"

The answer was obviously no, but he was going to ask anyway.
