Taking place in April.

Shay brought Fitz to a rooftop that overlooked too much of the city. Night hadn't fallen, but the sun was setting and the city, as it normally was, was bustling. She had convinced him to bring a small cooler with some alcohol (his choice, because she wasn't a coinsurer of alcoholic beverages.)

Once at the top, Shay placed her foot on the edge of the building and looked out to the city. "Nice, right?"

Fitz set the cooler down on top of a vent and rolled his shoulders. Damn thing was heavy, and the trip up hadn't made it any lighter. But he was here now, and he pulled out a pair of ales from the ice.

"Aye lass. Pretty. Wot're we doin up 'ere though?"
He dropped both bottle caps onto the roof and handed one to Shay before taking a swig himself.

Shay looked at the drink handed to her before taking a swig and stepping entirely on the rounded ledge, balancing carefully. She breathed in a shaky adrenaline-filled breath.

"Checking out the view -- and, you know, hanging out. One of those cool spots in the city. I like places up high. Lets you see things you might miss otherwise."

She teetered back and stepped away, taking another swig and coughing afterward from the taste. Shay turned and strode over to Fitz, glancing down at his hands to see if he was wearing her present -- and how.

"If you don't like it we can leave."

Fitz tipped up his bottle again and gave a small head shake. "Nah. It's cool. Just makin sure yet not plannin on pushin me o'er the edge."

The ring was on his right hand, but was turned so that all Shay could see was the band itself.

Looking out over the rooftop, he nodded. "Ah getcha. A different perspective. Just don't fall. Don't know Ah could survive if Ah 'ad to save ye this time."

"Almost falling is the fun part," she told him, trying not to let her irritation show on her face. She was close to just snatching his hand and checking without any hint of subtlety.

Shay looked ruefully at the ale before plugging her nose and downing the bottle quickly enough that some escaped down her chin and dripped to the roof. She coughed and threw the bottle as hard as she could over the side of the building.

"So if I fall, just let me. I don't really die." She flinched, unsure to the truth of those words.

"Was the present too much?"

Much as Shay tried, Fitz could see the irritation on her face. In the way she chugged her drink and threw the bottle. He smirked a bit and pointedly looked at the ring for a second before taking a sip.
"Now ye know Ah can't let ye go fallin' off roofs. Yer dads'd 'ave me 'ead."

He gave Shay a smirk and cocked an eyebrow. "Too much? Ah mean, maybe if ye were askin' me t' marry ye. Yer a lil young fer that, Ah think."

He finished off his own ale and tosses his empty into the cooler. "Ye've been givin' me a lot o' gifts lately. Tryin' t' bribe me fer me time?"

Shay took his hand, splaying his fingers and turning his hand palm up so she could see which direction the heart in the ring was facing.

"No, if I was going to do a marriage proposal it would have been a lot better than that."

His hand felt warm and it was nice, for once, not having to worry about visions when she touched someone skin to skin.

"Just had a lot of gift ideas, I suppose," she uttered out, cheeks a bright red. "I can stop, if you want. But I can't show affection any other way right now."

She dropped his hand, wishing the city was topped with snow and the evening air was chilled and biting. Times were always best then, for heavy conversations.

Fitz looked away, searching for anything on the horizon to focus on when Shay grabbed his hand to inspect the ring. Of course she knew what it meant, with the heart facing towards him. "Nah, Ah don't mind. Just can't always give ye nothin' back in return. Ill gotten goods ain't always easy to sell."

He ran his thumb over her knuckles absentmindedly, refusing to look at her directly. When she dropped his hand he pulled it back, clenching and unclenching his fist as if the hand had fallen asleep. There was one of those big television screens, showing a LuxTV advertisement.
"So. Ye do yer research. Good on ye."

"I stumbled upon this. Glad I did." Awkward, awkward. Why were things awkward? Maybe Shay didn't have anything to say, or too much and no words to describe any of them, which was normally the case.

She took another bottle of ale and popped the cap, standing right at the ledge and looking down at all the people, so far below they were specks and Shay felt that vibration through her feet and the butterflies in her stomach she always got on high places. How easy it would be to fall.

"Never thought I'd be one of those gift giver types," she said after a long pause of silence, before motioning to the LuxTV advertisement that showed a loving couple.

"Back when I was dating Logan I told him I loved him at least three times. Thought I did. Thought I was in love. Still do, maybe. I can't say. You ever been in love? Or think you were?"

Love. It was a weird word. He watched her, bouncing a bit in case she fell. He set his ale down, the taste kind of bothering him a bit.
"Ah dunno. One foster family. When Ah was twelve. They 'ad a daughter. Few years older than me. 'ad the biggest crush, but. That ain't the same thing, aye?"

Fitz stepped closer, not getting onto the ledge but staying close. "Ah think Ah might've loved the lass Ah was meant to marry, if we'd gotten to grow up together. But, the past's the past."
