The clouds of seagulls were thick on the beach that day when Avian Donner stepped off the boat and onto the docks of the island. The driver was trying to shoo the birds away as he helped the white-haired girl off the boat and grab her luggage for her. She gave a barely audible “thank you†and pulled her suitcase along behind her, the wheels hitting the wooden boards of the dock as it went. Much to her driver’s relief, the seagulls stopped swarming the boat, but much to his confusion, followed the strange girl. He watched Avian as she walked off, her sun hat flopping with every step, as the sea gulls scurried alongside her or flew in circles above her.
I wish I had some bread crumbs on hand. Avian through to herself as she stepped off the dock and now heard her suitcase rolling on cement.
It was always like this. Birds followed Avian any time she went outside, strangely attracted her presence (despite of her lacking presence around other people). And in this case, her uncontrollable power was causing others trouble. The locals were trying to swat the pesky gulls away from their vendors and their well-picked fishing spots. Avian couldn't help but feel responsible for their troubles. It was her second year at Starlight Academy yet she hadn't mastered a single thing about controlling her powers.
What would Mom say in a time like this?{/I] She asked herself. Probably the same way she always does, “keep your head high, Mother Goose!â€Â
Mother Goose. It was her mother’s nickname for her because birds followed her everywhere, much like baby geese to their mothers. However, some used it as a form of mockery so she scarcely told anyone else about that pet name. Speaking of mockery, she hardly talked to anyone to avoid it, that and so she wouldn't risk unleashing a murder of crows on them!
But she would still want me to keep my head high! She thought.
Taking a deep breath, Avian lifted her head a little more, revealing her one cerulean eye, the other one covered by her long, white hair. And when she did this, she realized she had made it. Starlight Academy was once before her again.
You’d think I’d be used to this by now, moving in and all. She thought as she timidly opened the large front doors and slipped in. The remaining seagulls watched her from the windows. But I rarely remember anything from last year, and I didn't talk to anyone either. I might as well be a freshman all over again!
Avian stood there in her sun hat and sun dress, her head slowly dropping again at the many halls before her.
Uh…which way was the admissions office?
