"Just checking," Angelo said, cracking a grin at Janelle. "It's pretty common here, honestly. For newcomers to, uh, have issues with the whole demon thing. I need to kind of prune it out. If you've met Roa though, you've met the worst of it. He's a bit..."

"Angry?" Jude finished.

"Angry," Angelo confirmed. "I'd say he's not really, but he is. Just try not to take it personally."

He stepped to the side, gesturing him for them to come in.

"I'll give you the tour. Not all that much to see, honestly."

Janelle gave an airy laugh. She had a sneaking suspicion that she was being tested, so she took a random guess. If the kids were going back to Hell, they've been there before, and it must have been safe enough for the island to allow them back.

"A-Ah, well, I'm getting used to it. If demons were an issue I think they wouldn't be allowed here, so it's all good... I think." Hopefully that was a polite enough response.

"And I can handle angry. He's not throwing fists or anything, so that's all good too. Buuuut, yeah, I'm all ready for the tour though." Janelle tried to conceal her excitement by balancing herself on her heels and holding her hands behind her back. Then she went in, trying to position herself so she'd keep being beside Jude.

The tour was mostly uneventful, and Jude mostly kept his mouth shut, aside from the odd comment. The house was nice, and there was room enough for all of them. And then Jude was shoved out of the room so Angelo could talk to her in private and make sure it was really what she wanted.

Jude was trying to keep his excitement on the down low as he helped Janelle move her stuff in. Really, he was kind of horrified by how much there was. His entire room had almost nothing in it, and yet she had stuff. She was really using that stipend, wasn't she?

"How did you get all this already?"

Janelle regretted buying so much stuff. It wasn't much, but she only just recently moved into her dorm with nothing, and now she was moving out with a lot to carry. How was she supposed to know she was going to live with Jude and his police sergeant future self?

"Oh, you know, places." She shot Jude a mysterious grin that was complimented by a wink.

"In all seriousness, I've been helping people out here and there, and sometimes I get paid. Like, recently, I babysat this really cute kid, but he could breathe fire and it was a disaster. 'Cause his dad didn't give me a proper warning for when I should expect it, he gave me a bonus. No one got hurt though, so it's all good."

The wink was not encouraging. The wink felt like she was trying to imply theft, only doing a really bad job of it. Because, really? Jude couldn't imagine her stealing anything. She was the kind who might sample a piece of candy at a bulk store, and then cry and insist on paying for it.

"Well, at least you're getting out there. Of all of us, I think you or Travis is probably adapting the best." He really wished Travis had moved in with them, but not enough to really say that. It'd just come off as clingy, and probably pretty weird.

"Oh, I'm definitely adjusting the best. Like, the gang," It wasn't some regular club just anyone could join. "has been doing fantastic. I didn't think I'd get so many members. At this rate, I'll be as popular as I was back home in no time. Only complaint I have is that some members want to do stuff that's way illegal. What do they think this club's about?"

Somehow, the "community service" part of the gang escaped some of the members. Some wanted to beat up bullies instead of assist victims in getting help from the teachers or police. Once she was recommended to vandalize abandoned houses with a logo representing the gang. That didn't sound so bad, but... it was illegal.

"Illegal?" Jude said, raising an eyebrow. Okay, now he had to know. What exactly were they getting up to. "Are they taking the delinquents part of the name a little bit too literally?"

That said, it was just suggestions. If it wasn't, Janelle would have been more serious about it. More nervous. She'd come to him when people had been drinking underage, after all, and she was way more casual about this than she'd been with that.

"It's not that they're taking it too literally." Janelle would never admit that some of her gang members were more delinquent than her. They just needed to learn how to be a good delinquent. "Some are just too eager to be violent. I don't want them beating up bullies when they're supposed to be protecting kids and getting them to report to the teachers. It's just," a long groan, "frustrating sometimes. At least they're trying to help though..."

"It's good they're trying to help, yeah," Jude said. "But it's like when kids in our world ran out to try and be heroes, only rather than helping people they just went and started to beat up anyone who looked shady. Happened all the time and always caused way too much trouble."

That wasn't them. They'd been careful about what they were doing, and focused on super powered stuff like they were supposed to. Only there was no equivalent on Manta Carlos. Not even close.

Janelle leaned a bit closer to Jude. With this island, he must have had all sorts of stories to go on about. Someone who looked as plain as him (other than the arm) must have attracted some weirdos. That's how it usually went in worlds like this... Well, in manga.
