Bel didn't really mind the interruption even though she didn't quite have the answers to Adelaida's questions and felt somewhat put on the spot. In fact, she almost started doubting her motivation for running. Was she being conceited or making this about herself? Adelaida's pointed questions did make her think hard about her reasons for considering these elections important.

After a minute of silence, Bel finally spoke. "It's important because the island has gone through some major changes lately... and we need to pull together and support each other more than ever before," she told Adelaida.

"Many of us are stuck here forever and can't really go home, people like myself, people from Dark Crystal, things we do now for each other will affect us later on," she explained quietly and thoughtfully.

"And why is it you that has to fix this? Surely, if the problem's as bad as you say it is, someone would have acted and not gamble it all on an unsure election."

Adelaida began to pry and chip away slowly, gently at Bel's reasoning. She was starting to brim with questions, trying to delve as deep as could be.

She knew very little of these changes that Bel spoke of, but they were insignificant. Whatever they were mattered not to Adelaida; she just wanted to pick at Bel's mind as best she could.

"What I am missing here is why you're running. If it were so significant, others would step up as well. Maybe you don't trust them to solve the problem... Or otherwise."

Bel shook her head at Adelaida's words. "No, no, I don't think people have noticed yet. That's the problem."

" The island has gone and is going through so many changes lately with the loss and then surge of magic, the malfunction of human shape charms, the unfreezing of the Dark Crystal academy and the island moving to a liminal zone... that nobody has noticed til now that there are people who need help that aren't being helped because they have simply been forgotten about in this whole crazy mess," she explained passionately.

"So many of us can't go home anymore either. Returning to Earth is sort of an option that many do not have anymore, and we need to show them that no matter what, there are people here who care about them... Starting at school... it's not enough anymore to give everyone a bed, food and a stipend."

"That's why it's so important for the school and the island to be a warm and welcoming place," Bel stated as she changed sitting position. "It's part of the reason I'm running. I am also here for good, and I know what it's like to not be able to go home."

"Hmm. I hadn't felt this," Adelaida said, thinking. She herself was a living portal, and the connection between her and the Elemental Plane of Fire had not faded in the slightesr.

But even then, this was a massive undertaking Bel was trying to put on her own shoulders.

"What you're trying to do is way above your paygrade if I'm being honest... I don't think most student presidents deal with the movements of the planes. Do you even have any plans for this?"

"It's not about dealing with planes," she said as she got to her feet starting to feel a little agitated by Adelaida's questions.

"it's about welcoming people, students mainly, and making sure that they feel at home, or at the very least, accepted and that they know how to get around the island properly," Bel pointed out.

"It's about assigning someone to show them the ins and outs as it were," she said as she slowly paced back and forth as she talked and defended her position.

Adelaida knew she'd struck a nerve, and more than anything, it just made her want to pry deeper. But she also knew if she did that, it was likely to cut the evening short, so she held back.

"You seem to have it all figured out," she said, smirking. "Still a hefty chunk you took into your lap there, and I can't say I know enough about you to know if you'll pull it off."

She leaned back on the railing, content to remain sitting while her companion got agitated and stood. "How exactly do you plan on making things home then?"

Bel was very grateful when Adelaida apparently stopped probing as intently as before and slowed her pacing as her inner agitation became less and less.

"Well, home tends to be where we feel welcomed, no?" the young goddess replied thoughtfully. "So, I think it begins by showing others that they are welcomed here by taking the time to show them around, help them get acclimated and befriend them if and where possible," she stated calmly.

Adelaida expected something a little more concrete, but then again, Bel joined the elections on a whim and that kind of act rarely led to proper planning and logistics. She had half a mind to question Bel on these matters. That probably wasn't going to go well though.

"And now you're being overwhelmed by what you joined up for. Enough for you to be back up here at least."

She chose to begin prying again, but this time, with a different intent. Maybe if she made Bel think about it, she'd end up with something more solid than nice words and feelings.

"Alright, pretend I'm the electorate. How would you make this place home for me? Your heart's in the right place, but I'm soulless and also I'm interested in how you'd make it actually work."

Bel would have quite happily continued with their rooftop conversation, she was even about to answer Adelaida's question about how she'd convince the electorate when her cell phone rang suddenly.

It was from Sam. Jasmine, the girl she had had a conversation with yesterday afternoon was in the hospital.

"Adelaida, I am sorry. But I have to go - a friend is ... I don't know actually. All I know is that she's in the hospital," Bel explained as she got to her feet, a worried look on her face.

"Maybe we can get together another evening, here on the roof?" she asked hopefully. She truly enjoyed their talks, and hoped to continue them.

Adelaida laughed. They hadn't ever arranged any of these talks, but Bel seemed intent on having more. She stood up and motioned to borrow Bel's phone briefly.

"If the fates allow it, or if you feel like it then. I'm always up. Just give me a message, and we'll see what we can make happen," she said, giving her contact information.

The conversation over, Adelaida began to walk away from the rooftop and back down the stairs. "See ya around, Alanna."
