No longer attending Starlight Academy, Valli and Kon agreed to move their sessions to his office in the city. Somehow, just that little change made Kon more willing to come to therapy. It wasn't that he hated it or was ashamed of it. It was that visiting a building in the city regularly made him feel more mature. And that was what he came into this appointment wanting to talk about.

Kon wasted no time. After arriving a few minutes early, greeting Valli, being let in, and seating himself, he took the lead of the conversation by immediately. "From what you've learned about me and our sessions, how old do you think I act? You don't need to be specific. Something as vague as mid-teens or early twenties is good enough."

Oh dear. The conversation was already going sideways, and Valli was blissfully, horribly aware of such a thing. It was hard not to guess at what Kon was getting at. Valli knew better than to fall into that trap.

"I don't think I'm qualified," Valli said after a moment. "I see a lot of people of a lot of different ages, and I've found that age and how people act have only the barest correlation. You certainly seem like a legal adult, if that answers your question."

Kon's frustration was plain on his face. He wasn't exactly sure how he felt about the answer. Technically, it was what he wanted, but a legal adult could be anything. He could act like a just-coming-into-age 18-year-old or, less realistically, a confident 40-year-old fully knowledgeable about life. Something more specific would have been nice, and he was going to push for it.

"That's... good." He forced a stiff smile. It was taking everything in him to not let his shape-shifting go haywire. The discussion was age, so he had a good feeling his colors weren't the only thing that may change. "It's only... I'm not sure if that's good enough. I've been, um, thinking about my age. How I've been stuck at nineteen for five years. But now that I'm out of school and focused on work, I don't... really feel like I fit 'nineteen' anymore. It feels weird even pursuing relationships like... this. I'd like to be more mature? Like I haven't been nineteen for five years but instead being twenty-four."

Valli strongly suspected that Kon had been hoping for a clear, easy answer. For a 'you act around twenty five', so that they could run off and do something about it. But Valli had other things to focus on, so he lay his hands in his lap, considered his options, and then decided to explain.

"I think you're looking at this in... a very unusual way," Valli said. "You're trying to match yourself up to what you think concepts mean based on how other people react to them. People treat people in their mid-twenties the way you want to be treated, and you feel you're ready to be treated that way, so you want to be treated that way."

He paused to consider, and then nodded.

"Do you know what the difference is between a person in their mid-twenties and early thirties? Brain wise, I mean."

Kon nodded his head slowly. Valli was right on the mark, but he was puzzled by how something like that was weird. Though Kon was also somewhat pleased. He always found himself complimented when told he was strange in some way.

Too bad Valli was giving him one of those questions where he would answer, "Er, no...," and had to wait to have his thought process proven wrong somehow. "I'm more focused on how they behave and how others perceive them... The respect they get. I don't think that's the right word, but I'd like to be seen as an equal to most adults, not a kid."

"Around twenty five is the point where a human's brain begins to degrade. They become slower over time as they age, their brains less elastic. That's why it's harder to learn things like languages as an adult, and easier when you're much young. But from the sounds of it, you're not experiencing that. So, mentally, you're not twenty five. You're in your prime, around nineteen or twenty."

So that was one thing scratched off the list.

"Do you know what, socially, the difference between a nineteen year old and a twenty four year old is?" This time he didn't wait for a response. "Five years of experience," he said. "Do you think that when you were born, you had all the experience of a nineteen year old?"

Maybe born was the wrong word, but too late for that.

Oh, that wasn't so bad. That even managed to get a smile out of Kon. So he was in his prime but wasn't too young to not be an adult. At least his dad wasn't a complete idiot, though this was more of a fortunate coincidence.

"No... Honestly, I've been feeling pretty shitty about my real age. I wish there was a way I couldn't, I don't know..." He let out a small laugh, embarrassed by what he was about to say. "In Dragon Ball Z, there's this thing called a Hyperbolic Time Chamber. The characters could go in there for a year and only miss one day outside. It'd be nice if I could do something like that. Get all the experience and maturity I want, then come back here without missing too much time. Because I know there's something I missing. I've been called a kid by two different people repeatedly. I can't tell if it's because they're long-lived immortals or because I just look that young..."

"You will always be a kid to someone," Valli said. "There will always be people older than you, and people with more experience. Really, the island's relationship with age is very different from the narrow reality. Off-island, there's only one factor. On-island, there's four."

He paused, then held up four fingers, ticking them down as he went.

"One, chronological age. How many years you've lived. You have five under your belt. Two, mental age. If your brain's reached full maturity. Yours has. Three, physical age. The age you look. You look around nineteen or twenty. And then four..."

Valli leaned back in his seat.

"Experience. That seems to be where you're having the real issue. You want to have all the experience a person in their mid-twenties should have, but there's no way to get that experience without... experiencing it."

Kon smiled awkwardly. "Sounds like I'm almost okay then. I've been trying to get experience, but, well, I need so many years under my belt. It's why the Hyperbolic Time Chamber sounds so appealing. I've done some schooling, I'm working... I actually asked someone out, and it went mostly fine. We decided to wait and see. I think that's a good sign. His name's Jafar and..." Kon's entire body turned slightly pinker. "He mentioned he's thirty like it was an issue. And I'm not sure why it would be, but... it made me think he really didn't see me as an equal. Apparently it wasn't an issue for him and he just thought it might be for me, but... yeah... I'm still having trouble figuring out what's appropriate. I'd like to be in a place where a thirty-year-old wouldn't need to bring up our ages, though."

He was rambling. How much had he actually said? "Does that make sense?"

This was going to need some finesse. Young people didn't like being reminded they were young. They didn't like being told they were acting in an immature way. So he was going to have to focus on the positives.

"Realistically? You'll need to wait then. There's no magic bullet. Some people will always be bothered by the fact that you're chronologically only five. I imagine, if things were flipped around, you'd feel the same way. Would you date someone who had only been alive for a few days, for example? Even if htey looked much older?"
