"I think in some ways that makes it easier," Frederick said after some consideration. "Having other people. When people suffer a loss together, they pull tighter. But when you suffer a loss alone, you pull apart. It can be hard to open up to people who aren't feeling the same loss, so you pull away. Your family might feel bad for you, but they aren't feeling the loss in the same way, and it makes it hard to connect."

He thought for a moment about PTSD after the great war, and the lecture he'd watched once. How different things were. How people had pulled together. He'd desperately wanted Halcyon to pull together, but instead they had pulled apart. There was no community organization, no attempt to maintain their history. Many of those without powers had moved off-island.

If they had no powers and were willing to be quiet, integrating into a narrow reality society was simply the better option, wasn't it?

"I suppose I was lucky in that regard," he said, drawing his hand back. His eyes were fixed on a place a bit behind Zora, not quite looking at her, his face falling.

He hadn't lost anyone, after all.

"Yes, very much so," Zora nodded sadly and in total agreement with his observation. She did feel so alone at the moment, and while everyone around her assured her that she could talk to them, she also felt uncomfortable recounting what happened.

She couldn't bring herself to make others uncomfortable by sharing Broen's final and yet oh-so-awful last moments - how could she, in good conscious, let others experience that? She couldn't, and in a way, it would have been a relief if she had someone - anyone - who went through it with her.

When Frederick pulled his hand back, Zora immediately saw the faraway and sudden crestfallen look cross his face, and couldn't help but wonder what had brought it on. He had also lost so much, whether he recognized it or not.

"You have lost a lot too, maybe not family, but I'm sure you had friends and people you cared about, no?" she asked gently.

Friends and people he cared about... He'd lost a lot of people, but by the time Halcyon was gone? Not so many.

"No one I was very close to," he admitted. "Things were already sliding downhill before Halcyon ended. I didn't have time to socialize much. Most of my friends had lost contact, or fallen by the wayside. My social circle was always small, but when things kept getting worse and worse..."

He had other things to do. Higher priority things. The constant encroachment of the Gultha had been more important than keeping up with those he'd considered his friends, and he'd never had anyone he considered too close to begin with.

"My parents were already gone years ago. My wife..." He trailed off again. "Wasn't around."

As Frederick spoke of Halcyon, Zora just listened and refrained from commenting. She wasn't sure what to actually say. She understood how that could have happened to him. Many times during her own adult lifetime, her job had taken her away from her friends and family for periods at a time.

"it's hard being alone, especially here, in a world that isn't your own," Zoraida admitted as her mind, without any warning, turned back to the fact that she'd never see Broen again, and thus, making her heart sink to her stomach, although this time, luckily, she did not break down in tears.

"Do you not have siblings?" she asked, remembering then that Broen had mentioned his mother to her, and that Frederick had not been especially generous towards her. which made her silently wonder now what the full story was.

Her mood had sunk again. He should have expected as much, talking of people who were gone, but he supposed it was all but inevitable. No matter what, the conversation was going to come down at times. She'd suffered a recent loss, and it was still fresh and raw.

"No," he said. "I was an only child. Growing up it was just the three of us, so I have to admit I'm a bit envious of large families." Siblings. Cousins. Aunts and Uncles. "Was your family large?"

He was guessing yes. Or at least larger than his own.

Frederick, like Broen, were only children, and Zora sympathized. Her immediate family was not much bigger - but luckily, her extended family was fairly close and large - like many Spanish families often were.

"Growing up, it was my brother and I. Now, it's just me and my son. My brother passed away last summer, my mother when I was twelve, and my father ... well, he's not around anymore. He left shortly after my mother died," she explained calmly, though her knuckles were white as she gripped her teacup.

"However, luckily, the Del Bosque extended family is huge," she explained."And my grandfather and his daughter, and their children are here on Manta Carlos. So that's nice. Christmases are crazy, and, right now, I am grateful they are here," she admitted, not being able to imagine going through this alone.

He hadn't known she had a son, and the surprise no doubt showed on his face.

"It's good you have people," he said after a moment to recover. "Even if your family situation sounds... complex." He was going to need a map to keep track of it all. An aunt, a grandfather, aunt's children, son... "And I'm sorry to hear about your brother. I've been told losing a sibling is a special kind of pain."

Not something he'd experienced, obviously, but he'd spoken at plenty of funerals. He'd seen that kind of suffering.

"I have to admit I'm envious of you having such a large family. And having them all here, too. My family was never one for large holiday gatherings, but when I visited others I always was quite taken by them."

"I'm afraid my relationship with Tomas, my brother, was rather complicated, but thank you," Zora replied, thanking Frederick for his kind words. She did not really want to open that can of worms, right now. It was a sensitive and uncomfortable topic, and besides few knew how perverse Tomas had been, and for that reason alone, she'd rather not dwell for too long on it.

Thankful for the slight change in topic, Zora actually smiled briefly at the mention of her family. "Del Bosque gatherings can be a bit noisy and loud," she admitted, "Especially, if my grandfather is debating magic or druid politics with someone," she explained. "That or business," she added with a small wry smile, transported briefly to a happier time which made her both wistful and melancholic.

There was something there, but it wasn't something he wanted to dig into. The way she'd said it was almost dismissive, clearly trying to move on.

He was happy to oblige.

"The opposite of my own family," he said. "I think the loudest it ever got was when my mother tripped and broke a tray of china." He smiled at her smile, happy she seemed to be willing to relax.

"I can't say I know all that much about magic. My own family had an active metahuman gene, starting with my father, but no connection to the magic community of Halcyon. The only wizard I knew was... cagey at best. He didn't like talking about his work."

"Oh my... My dad's family is like that too," she said with a small laugh at the image of Frederick's mom all prim and proper. It felt like ages since she had laughed or even smiled, and it felt good to know that she still could find the humour in things. However small or brief that moment was.

Zora nodded, "Yes, we are exactly like that. All the Del Bosques all carry a "magic" gene. In fact, it's kind of interesting to see who develops what over time," she told him as she took a sip of her now luke warm beverage.

"Are the abilities passed on through your metahuman gene random? Or is there a pattern of some sort?" she asked, curious to know a bit more about the Crawford family.
