"I think in some ways that makes it easier," Frederick said after some consideration. "Having other people. When people suffer a loss together, they pull tighter. But when you suffer a loss alone, you pull apart. It can be hard to open up to people who aren't feeling the same loss, so you pull away. Your family might feel bad for you, but they aren't feeling the loss in the same way, and it makes it hard to connect."
He thought for a moment about PTSD after the great war, and the lecture he'd watched once. How different things were. How people had pulled together. He'd desperately wanted Halcyon to pull together, but instead they had pulled apart. There was no community organization, no attempt to maintain their history. Many of those without powers had moved off-island.
If they had no powers and were willing to be quiet, integrating into a narrow reality society was simply the better option, wasn't it?
"I suppose I was lucky in that regard," he said, drawing his hand back. His eyes were fixed on a place a bit behind Zora, not quite looking at her, his face falling.
He hadn't lost anyone, after all.
