Anyone who visited Carpe Noctem on the final night would have found a small basket of river stones. The river stones, when buried before midnight that night, will summon up a spirit of someone you love who has passed on. Their spirit won't linger for long, but should be long enough to provide some amount of closure.

If you want to do a short of your character using the stone, feel free to post here rather than making a unique selfthread.

Feel free to say your character arrived to get their stone offscreen if you weren't in the ICC. The person summoned will generally just be one person (two in rare cases), and generally would be the person you have the least closure with.

Ishvi clutched his stone tightly, a couple tears already running down his face as he made his way through the woods. He was flickering wildly in distress, but he refused to shift completely for this, even if it meant someone might see him cry. It was hard for him to be back here, in the forest, the site of the duel where he'd started to fall.

Even harder to put down the stone, bury it, take the chance to say goodbye. Looking at it in the dark, he realized he couldn't face whoever he might see. Gently, he placed the rock on the ground, but didn't bury it. Whispered, "I failed... I'm sorry I didn't die in your place."

Then he did let himself shift. Flew off feeling sick to his stomach. He couldn't mar his memory by showing his family he'd fallen. He wouldn't ruin their peace for his own closure - he didn't deserve it anyway.

Going ever deeper into the woods, needing to be far far away from everyone, and anything, Zora walked almost zombie-like. The idea left her outwardly numb to some extent, yet inside she could feel waves of fear and nausea.

Did she really want to bring up the shade of somebody that hated her so much? That wanted her dead, and would kill those around her, people she loved and cared for? Did she really want to do that? No, she didn't. Not really. Yet, she knew she must if she wanted to move forward.

She had hidden how much and how badly she was still feeling from everyone, nobody knew about the horrible nightmares and paralyzing fear of losing or hurting others. Or how the unexpected made her start, her heart race and her palms sweat. How could she bother Broen, or even Celeste? Or Rafael? They all had their problems and she just felt bad even thinking of adding to them. Not after all the pain and heartbreak and trouble she had caused. Besides, in a way, everything that had happened was her fault. It was her brother who had caused all that and her arrogance at believing she could handle it somehow. It was all her fault.

And so, here she was going ever deeper into the dark woods away from everyone. To bring up the shade of the person who she most loathed, hated and cried for. Her brother.

Stopping finally, she looked down at the smooth stone in her hand and saw then that her knuckles were white. She had been gripping the boon so tightly that she could barely feel her fingers anymore. And with that, she then noticed that her cheeks were wet. She had been crying... Lords, she whispered in dismay realising just how affected she was.

Kneeling down, Zora dug a shallow hole in the dirt, and placed the rock in it and covered it with dirt and leaves. Then she stood back and waited. And as she did, her fear grew, every forest sound made her jump, and her whole body felt on edge, part of her wishing now that she hadn't.

Then suddenly, Tomas's shade slowly appeared, looking like he did in life, smug, arrogant, judging and quiet. Staring blankly at this apparition, Zora was dumbfounded at what she was seeing. She knew she would see him, but part of her had hoped he wouldn't appear.

Staring at Tomas for a long while as he stood there, saying nothing, Zora was just going to leave. Let her anger go, but then, maybe it was her mind playing a trick, or maybe his shade was taunting her from the grave, but she'd swear that she thought she saw him smirk and then laugh at her, and this caused her to snap.

Suddenly and quite unexpectedly, Zoraida felt all the suppressed anger come to the surface, and started yelling and screaming at her brother as tears of rage ran freely down her cheeks. Letting loose every reproach, every question, and all the hate she had ever bottled up until she could scream no more and just felt to her knees, body shaking, exhausted and cried until she could cry no more.

Vi had finally worked up the courage to go to the bonfire. She'd heard the gods were doing things there at the event so that made her really nervous but there was the potential for her to see her mom or dad in the flames. She couldn't just ignore that opportunity. But then before she had gotten to look into the flames Miss November had arrived. The goddess who had accidentally been ordering Vi the last time she went to one of these god event things. The goddess was clearly upset and bothered by it, even before Vi had tasted her emotions she knew that. She would have maybe tried to tough it out if it was just her own fear but several people being bothered by the whole thing, well, it was just too much.

Vi had fled from the bonfire through Eon's portal back to her dorm room. Eon had followed but then disappeared again after getting a text. When he had returned he was holding one of the stones. She wouldn't need the bonfire to see one of her dead parents after all.

Hours later Vi stood on the beach. Why the beach? She didn't know but it was empty. The only person she would have let follow her was Eon.

Vi hesitated- would the stone count as a holy object and hurt her? It hadn't made her feel uneasy like a cross would have. The stone was cool and smooth to the touch and it did not burn. She quickly dug in the sand with her hands and plopped it into the hole, covering it.

She sat there staring at the mound of sand for a few moments before anything happened. A figure strode slowly crawled out of the ground to stand there before her. A strong looking man, wearing a maintenance uniform and a Yankees cap. Just as she remembered him from the last time she saw him. The last day she had seen her mother and father, when she was only 10. She'd loved her mother just as much, but she had always been a daddy's girl.

Vi cried as she jumped to her feet and tried to hug him- but he had no physical form and her arms just slipped through him. She frowned a little and took two steps back, trying to make herself come up with words that she didn't have. What could she say? She missed him? She'd become a horrible person after being taken and then had worked her way back to where she was now? He'd either known about all that or it didn't really matter.

Fortunately he spoke up instead. "Heeeey, there's my little girl!" the shade called out in that same warm tone she had practically forgotten. "It's been a while. Look how big you are."

"Daddy...," Vi sobbed like the little girl she had long ago discarded. Had been forced to discard. "I... I don't have long but I go by Violeta now and...," she trailed off, too emotional to think straight. Why hadn't she written out what to say?

Her father only smiled and moved forward to hug her. There was no actual touch but she still felt like he was there again. Holding her in his arms. He began to sing and she joined in, her beautiful voice broken through the tears and mixing with his. It had been more than a decade since she last sung that song. It had become one of the songs in their little bedtime ritual for her. Him singing her to sleep, and then later when she got a little older she had turned it into a bedtime duet.

Moon River, by Andy Williams.

By the time they had finished the song he began to flicker as his time there drew to a close. He had just a couple moments left to say, "I love you Danielle. Violeta. And... we're so proud of you..." his voice faded as the shade lost cohesion and faded away.

"Bye daddy, I love you. And mom too," Vi whispered as she sunk down to sit in the sand, hugging her knees to herself. And weeping. But they were mostly tears of relief and happiness by then. Something about getting one last chance to sing with him, and to say goodbye, had been enough. A weight she hadn't really known she was under felt like it had been lifted a little bit. She sat there for a while in the night before she was composed enough to leave. It wasn't like she had a bedtime any more.

Aura had gone to the bonfire every night. Aside from the flames that seemed to have a bit of a draw for her, sometimes in a very sickening way as she recalled bits and pieces from her past, she had heard it was an event to commemorate those they had lost. And she had several people she had lost.

Miss November had been so sweet, even if she was shy. She reminded Aura of herself a little bit. The stones the goddess offered were an amazing gift, and Aura was thrilled. And nervous.

She had slipped off fairly deep into the woods until she was fairly sure no one would accidentally stumble upon her. In a very small clearing she stood looking at the smooth stone in her hand. Her hair swept back out of her face so she could use the unsettling yellow eyes in the side of her face to see in the dark.

Aura began digging at the ground with her bare fingers. Clawing at it until there was a hole big enough for the stone. She gave the stone a kiss and then gently placed it in the hole, covering it with dirt. Aura sat down to wait, and glanced up at the moon- in it's waxing crescent phase after the recent new moon. Almost two weeks before it would be full again, but here at least she had the caves Robert had so kindly showed her. She rubbed at the gemstone that she had in her pocket still- the one Miss November had given her the other night. And quietly thanked the goddess for her gifts.

As she looked back down she saw the shimmering, not-quite-physical, form of a woman standing before her. She'd seen glimpses of her brothers in the bonfires- both in wolf and human form. But this was someone she needed to see even more. To speak to a little, if she could. Her mother.

Aura stood up and nervously looked at the woman. It was like she had been before- before they were all gone and her life was ruined. Her eyes watered and threatened to begin pouring forth but she held them back. She wouldn't cry yet. She had to know... did she blame her? Did her mother hate her for what she had done to her own family. Her own flesh and blood.

"Um, I-i...," she faltered with the sound of a hiccup mixed in. "I'm so... s-sorry mom. I couldn't... I didn't." She made a sound like a wolf whining in pain and anguish. "I a-ate you all... I'm a horrible monster," she finally forced herself to admit it and then she slumped to the ground. No longer able to support herself.

The shade of Aura's mother was silent and she calmly stepped forward and knelt down before her daughter. Her only daughter from a family full of boys. She reached the form of her hand down to grab Aura's attention and gestured for her to look back up, shaking her own head and smiling at her daughter as she touched her cheek. No actual contact of course, but the same effect anyway. Aura didn't need to hear her mother. She could feel the sentiment just as well. Deep down she did know her mother wouldn't blame her. Things had been out of her control and she had been a victim just as much as everyone else had.

"I know, it wasn't my fault but I still feel responsible. I still have nightmares about it mom. Could-," she paused as the tears were fully streaming down her face then. From all of her eyes. "Can you maybe just sit here with me please?" She whispered, barely able to bring herself to voice words.

Sitting there quietly crying next to her mother's ghost was the best she could do. It wasn't some big explanation or dialogue about how she was doing better and all that. No, she just enjoyed the company of her mother one last time. And as her mother faded away again Aura could have sworn she head a phrase whispered to her, "We love you."

Aura was too choked up to move so she decided to spend the night there in the woods. Her body made horrible noises as she shifted into her monstrous wolf form with too many appendages sticking out, many of which were malformed and gross. It was a terrible sight to behold, but she had luckily picked a private spot. So no one would be disturbed by her, just as much as she wouldn't be disturbed.

A great howling whine escaped from her multiple jaws as she paced around in a circle and then curled up right on top of where the stone had been buried. And she slept. A glorious sleep free from nightmares, and instead she dreamed of running through the woods with her pack. As a little pup.

Minnie clutched the rock in her hand, squeezing it so hard her hand hurt. She'd only gone to the bonfire at the last minute, not wanting to deal with anyone else who might have gone. She didn't even know why she'd grabbed a stone, maybe some of this magic island stuff was getting to her. Maybe it was morbid curiosity to see what would be thrown at her next.

There was only one person she expected to see. And tears didn't come as she dug in the dirt, suddenly in a hurry to get this over with. A part of her was terrified... most of her was, to see her dad again after what she'd done to him. But the shade that first appeared was whole, only his transparency hinting that he wasn't alive.

"Dad? I..." She didn't even get to finish before he began his criticism of her. Finding the cruelest words to tell her she was neither human not his child, and had been selfish to reject his affection. Making himself out as a victim while tearing her apart verbally. And when she broke down crying, her glamour broken, he gave her vile suggestions on how she could prove she was sorry.

Fortunately, the shade faded before he could say much more, but the damage was done. Minnie stumbled a little further into the woods, tears dried as quickly as they had come.
Her claws were almost comfortable against her arms. She didn't feel pain from them. Didn't stop until her glamour was back up and she could breathe again. It wasn't enough, but she was already a little faint walking back to the dorms.
It would never be enough to make up for what she had done.

The crystal-like stone sat lightly atop the palm of her hand. It's physical weight minuscule compared to the power which resides within. Casually strolling deeper into the woods, Raella was in no rush to begin the ritual. Every now and then, she would pause, appreciating the abundant evergreens and spruces which surrounded her. Indeed, there was no hurry, none at all. Stopping by the side of a stream, the trickling water drowned out echoes of scampering critters. It sounded an awful lot like the sea.

Where she came from, the waves would rhythmically crash against the rocky terrain, creating a sense of consistency - like the ticking of a grandfather's clock. The seaside's unique aroma combined with the crisp but gentle breeze birthed an atmosphere like none other. It brought indescribable euphoria, then, a resentful despair. Even after her mother's death, the tide continued to roll in - always regular, forever unwavering, almost as if nothing had changed. The ghost of a smile touched Raella's lips as she fell into a reminiscence. She recalled the days where she'd frolick by the seaside with the accompaniment of her mother, learning and discovering the vast world around her. They'd pretend previous night's fighting had never happened; that the damage had miraculously been undone. A childish ignorance but a blissful one. Under her mother's guidance, she learnt to utilize her powers and hone them accordingly. It was ironic, really: while the sunrise brought a growth in abilities, upon sunset, demonic energy would clash an ugly display of strength between her parents. It wasn't a perfect time but it was still magical.

Then her mother left.

And like a cliff which collapses from erosion, so did her reverie. Time waits for no man, instead, the next stage of life loomed over her like ashen storm clouds.

"Well, no harm getting answers."

Her vacant voice carried little emotion, shattering the thin coating of lingering silence. Kneeling down, Raella cupped the soil with her hands, before placing the pebble down and covering it. As she expected, a light blue projection bloomed forth from the buried pebble, slowly morphing into the shape of her deceased mother. Emitting a faint luminescence, the translucent spirit wavered unsteadily, extending a hand toward Raella. The act of merely watching this unfold caused a bitterness to fester deep within her gut, twisting and squirming as if trying to find an exit. A familiar loathing plagued her chest, descending upon her and encapsulating her in its unyielding grasp.

"Pathetic. Even I could create better illusions."

Distasteful words spewed out of her mouth, rolling off the tip of her tongue like it was second nature. Despite this, her mother's smile never flickered. Raella felt her mother place her hand on her head, fingers lightly combing through her hair before reaching down to stroke her cheeks as she would a child's. Yet her touch was cold, almost icy; nothing like what she remembered it to be. Slapping her hand away, Raella abruptly backed off. Her mind screamed at her to speak. To utter one of the countless sentences from the countless nights she stayed up, thinking about what she would say to her mother had she been given the chance.

"You left. Why?"

Raella watched her mother wordlessly inch closer to her, not offering an answer. Once again, she reached out to Raella as if hoping to establish a physical connection.

"Why?"

She repeated, this time a little louder but still controlled and firm. She came for answers, not affection. Raella refused to be weak and vulnerable, especially not in front of a mother who abandoned her own child. "You know, I did love you. I mean, family sticks together right?" Cutting herself off, Raella chuckled at her previous beliefs. Her forced, strained laughter almost pitiful. "Yeah, right. Clearly, I assumed wrong." Pausing once again, she closed the distance between them in a swift movement. Leaning in close, Raella tilted her head upward to meet the gaze of her mother.

"Because you clearly didn't love me."

Anguish and grief washed over her like a spiraling storm, consuming and overriding any rational thought but she refused to lose control. Not yet. Still, her mother's expression remained patient, understanding and most of all painstakingly warm. Raella felt cold arms clasp around her waist in a tight embrace. The spirit's strength was fading and so was it's being.

"I never left you. My love transcends the boundaries between us; I reside the illusions you create of me and I exist eternally in your memories."

Her mother's tender whisper though almost inaudible, calmed the brewing tempest within her. Releasing Raella, her mother flashed her a final smile as she dissipated into the surroundings. Again, time took her mother away from her.

"I'll always love you, Raella"

Her parting words lingered in the air and like the drop of water that broke the dam, Raella's scream resounded throughout the vicinity. Slamming her fist into the ground, she cursed the reality of the situation and the universe itself. Tears streamed down her cheeks, falling onto the earth like a subsiding rain while grief claimed her unforgiving heart. Eventually, that too faded into a bay of desolation and loneliness.

In the end, it was like her encounter was but one of the infinite waves crashing onto the shore; insignificant and forgotten with time, almost as it never existed to begin with.

OOC: This was pretty ehhhh I kind of wish my writing was better to portray more feelings and stuff but it was good practice!! Also i wrote this from 3am-430am so like that would explain the shit quality LOL
