Chloe clicked her stopwatch and slowed down, staring at the screen as she walked off the track. Four minutes and eight seconds. For a human, this would have been an excellent time for a one-mile run.

Chloe wasn't human. She had just finished running two miles, and she was getting frustrated at how slow she had become. Maybe it had been too long since her last feeding, or maybe she just hadn't been exercising enough over the last half-year or so. She sat down on a nearby bench and sipped her water, caught her breath. Hells, she was definitely out of shape.

As she sat, she noticed another guy, a little older than her, who had legs that were pretty similar to her own. Another humanoid with digitigrade legs. She didn't want to come off like she was staring at him, but what else was she supposed to do? Besides, he seemed oddly focused on her himself.

Tez was out for a wander. He had just finished the first of what would probably be many psychology classes, and afterwards had gone outside for a smoke.

As the calming smoke filled his lungs, he spotted someone he had seen about before. It was Chloe Black, the head of the DSU, an group Tez was thinking of joining. He'd also seen her after the cornmaze incident. Many of those pulled out of the maze afterwards told horrific stories, of murder and monsters, but Tez didn't have any of those. He spent the entire time hiding and getting high. He dropped the cigarette butt, and ground it underfoot, before walking over.

"Hey, you're Chloe Black, right?" He enquired to the person sitting down. He hoped she was a face people knew, or this would come across as very creepy. "I'm Tez. Tez Gann. I'm a, er, new student at the college"

It wasn't too uncommon for people to know her name. Being in the news a couple of times would do that. "That's me. What's up?"

He didn't feel like a demon. This didn't mean that he wasn't a demon, but it did mean that he probably wasn't a demon, so she didn't think this would be about the club. Chloe's immediate reaction was to feel uncomfortable. She was already anticipating some kind of probing question about her father or - the demon kings of hell forbid it - about the corn maze incident. Well, she was sick of that, and she was already putting together a killer retort to get him off her back. The moment he mentioned Jenkins she was going to unload on him.

"You run the DSU right? I'm thinking of joining" said Tez, taking a seat next to Chloe

"I'm not really a demon, but morons think I am, cos I look like this." Said Tez, pointing at hinself "I get the occasional "go back to hell". Like some dude threw holy water at me on my way home from work once. Well water from a bottle with a rosary in it, i couldn't tell if it was holy or not. Didn't do anything to me except mess up my hair."

He had thought nothing of it, only realizing that it was holy water when he had got home that night and thought about it. He worked with an actual demon, Eli, and, as much as they argued, he was glad he got the face full of holy water rather than her.

Chloe gave him a horrified look. "They threw holy water at you!?" The thought of random attacks like that horrified her. She could imagine one of her nieces, or even her daughter being a victim of that. The thought of someone flinging that stuff at her daughter would keep her up at night.

"Who the fuck..." Someone had to get to the bottom of this. That kind of behavior couldn't be allowed to continue. "I mean, do you know who did it?" As soon as he answered, she'd hit him with another question, frantic. "Where did it happen?" Then, "Did you report it to the police?"

"Nah, didn't see who did it, he was wearing one of those masks with the eyes cut out er..." Tez waved his hand absentmindedly attempting to remember the word "a balaclava. It happened in an alley down by Club Orpheus, i was taking a shortcut from work back to my flat. I think the dude followed me when I left work. Yelled "Go to Hell!" at me, threw the water, freaked when nothing happened, and scarpered. Police took my statement, nothing else came of it."

The police on the island were busy people, thought Tez, and with no harm done to him, they probably just filed the incident somewhere and forgot about it.

"So yeah sometimes stupid shit like that happens." Said Tez with a shrug. He had got a little bit of abuse for his appearance in school, but generally his life had been plain sailing "This island is a great place. I wish everyone could just get along".

Tez had the sense to report it. At least there was that. Hopefully the cops would take it seriously.

"I know people who would've died from that. Or if they lived, it wouldn't be pretty." Chloe wished she still had Arach serving her. If that masked man still went to Club Orpheus, Arach might have been able to figure out who it was. She could imagine the things she would have been able to do to him a year ago. She almost relished the thought of them. If only she had a way to find this guy...

She took a deep breath, she told herself that tracking this guy down wouldn't be a good use of her time or energy. Even if she found him, retaliation would be a bad idea. She should just try to push this revenge fantasy out of her mind.

"So, I hope the police deal with it. But there's not much we can do about it now. Did you say you wanted to join the club?" The story about the holy water attack must have pushed the earlier part of their conversation out of her mind.

She seemed to take it quite seriously. Tez had always thought of it as a fun story, but, yeah thinking about it, if the assailant had been right, and Tez was a demon, then it probably would be assault.

"Yeah, I work with a demon lass" said Tez "glad they got me instead of her. Oh, yeah the club. So i'm not a demon... i'm sorta demon adjacent. I'm an avatar of an aztec god who handled all the demon-like stuff, so i thought, hey, since i'm back in college i'll join the DSU. I saw all the stuff you guys did to improve things after the corn maze. It was pretty awesome."

Tez had never participated in the rallies or anything, because no retaliation from the corn maze had fallen on him. Nobody had blamed him for anything. The jaguar man haunted nobodies nightmares. He had roared a few times, to keep people away, but in general, he hadn't been bothered.

"I'm glad that turned out as well as it did," Chloe said.

And that was all she wanted to say about the aftermath of the Corn Maze incident. She didn't get death threats very often anymore, at least. She didn't miss being that afraid of going out in public.

"Though, what did you mean by 'demon-like stuff?' Since that can mean different things depending on who you ask." She had taken a world religions class a while back, but she was drawing blanks on who Tez was supposed to be representing. Maybe she should have studied harder, back then.

"Well..." Said Tez, nervously wiggling his obsidian toes "I'm an avatar of an Aztec god, called Tezcatlipoca, the dude who created me. He was the god of a whole bunch of stuff, like discord, sickness, disease, hurricanes, all that nonsense. He was sorta the aztec equivilent of the devil, cos there weren't any demons in that particular pantheon. They had a whole visual thing going on. All the evil gods had white eyes"

Tez pointed at his own eyes, which were a brilliant white, without iris or pupil. His fingernails were made of a reflective, black material, as were his teeth, obsidian.

"and so did Tezcatlipoca, and so do I. I kinda don't fit in anywhere. I'm not a demigod, I'm sorta something else. More like a clone than a child, but not a full god. So i kinda thought, hey people mistake me for a demon, and the DSU seems cool, why not join?"
