Zora had come down to the community centre that evening because of - well, the rumours....rumours that had been going around about the party itself. She had been curious mostly. However, she was pretty sure now that curiosity had killed the cat in the end. Everything had been fine, the grass on the floor, the appearance of squirrels, the strange artefacts, the call of bells in the distance - all that had been fascinating, fun - she had been enjoying herself with everything - until the pool of water had appeared.

When she glanced down into the small pool that had appeared in the middle of the floor, the face staring back at her in the mirrored water was not her own, nor was it someone she had ever expected to see. And as Zora quietly listened to the chatter in the room of what others had seen, she started to feel extremely disconcerted and confused.

And so, when Jude asked Zora if she wanted to go out and get some fresh air, she had quickly agreed. Walking in relative silence, they finally came to a small cafe a few blocks away. There Zora suggested they sit out on the half empty patio - it was a night evening - where they each ordered something to drink.

it hadn't been hard to realize what had happened. Not with the mention of girlfriends and boyfriends and how uncomfortable some of the people were. The pool showed you the person you desired. Your... love or crush or whatever. Jude wasn't exactly keen on the whole idea, but he wasn't nearly as bothered as Zora was.

She was upset. No question. Whatever she'd seen had shaken her, and Jude let the silence last right until his ice tea had arrived, at which point he very carefully broached the subject.

"Do you want to talk about it? Or just... something else?"

Thanking the waitress when she put their drinks in front of them - ice tea for Jude, a chilled glass of white wine for her. Taking a much-needed sip first of her wine, Zora considered Jude's question and didn't know the answer. She wasn't sure how to begin or even what to say, or if she wanted to say anything... saying things out loud made them real, and Zora wasn't too sure she wanted that - she liked living in the dark sometimes, especially where feelings were concerned.

"Maybe something else... for bit?" Zora suggested as she tried to set aside what she was feeling for the moment, and understand why the pool had shown her that particular person.

Jude could do that. He could talk about other things. Boring things. Mundane things. Things to fill the space and distract Zora from what she'd seen.

"I finished fixing up my schedule with the school," Jude said. "And they gave me the list of my textbooks, so I went and got them all from the library and spent a few days reading. Just reading from start to finish. Most of it was pretty boring, but I know it all now, so that means more time during the school year where I don't have to think about it at all. It's efficient."

"That's good, so basically you are all caught up..." Zora said distractedly as she sipped at her wine, half listening to Jude talk for a while while her mind kept wandering back to the pool and the reflection she had seen there.

"Did you... by any chance, look in the pool back there at the centre?" Zora asked Jude looking at him questioningly, not sure now whether she had actually seen him approach the mysterious pool of water.

He had expected she'd ask, and he nodded, his answer already pre-prepared. He'd thought about it, and how he wanted to answer, and more importantly how to be careful about his answer.

"I did. I kind of worked out what I might see beforehand, so it wasn't a surprise or anything. But I did. I guess it's kind of an interesting magic, because some people are happy, and some are upset, and some are angry about it. Everyone's reactions are different."

At Jude's words, Zora just nodded thoughtfully so he had looked in the pool. She now wondered who he had seen.

"And do you think that, well, it really shows the truth about who you are, could be, in love with?" Zora asked him with some uncertainty as she toyed with her glass absentmindedly when Jude said that he had, indeed, looked in the pool and seen something.

"Or do you think it's... maybe, it's just, I don't know...maybe, a hidden desire, possibly or suggestion instead?" Zora faltered here, she knew she wasn't making much sense, possibly because she was still trying to make sense of who she had seen earlier.

Something in the way she said things left Jude uncertain. Because a part of Jude - a not insignificant part - worried. Worried that maybe he was reading too much into this. He barely knew anything about Zora. He didn't know what was happening in her life. He didn't know who she knew. It could be anyone.

"I don't think so," Jude said, trying his best to be honest. She wanted honesty, didn't she? That was one of the things he was good for. She didn't want lip service.

"I think it could be a hidden desire, I guess," Jude said after a moment of consideration. "Someone you have feelings for, but maybe haven't, ah, accepted."

Relatable.

Zora mulled carefully over Jude's words. They made sense in a way, and at least, he hadn't said that he thought the pool was a clear reflection of things, that it showed you who you supposedly were in love or even infatuated with. For some reason, that idea upset her and did not bring her peace of mind.

However, the idea that the pool showed - or indicated something she had not accepted did not make it any easier, she still had major problems with the idea that she might have any kind of feelings for this person.

"Were you happy with what you saw reflected in the water?" Zora asked Jude.

She looked so uncomfortable. Whoever she'd seen, she obviously didn't like it.

"I don't know if happy is the term I'd use. It would never work. It's... like the magical equivalent of a resigned sigh for me. It won't work, it's not plausible, and I already knew what I was going to get. All it did is... confirm how the magic worked, I guess. That it was real."
