Valaina was having second thoughts about changing herself into human form. He seemed awfully moody. How would he react towards her? She sat there, debating in her mind. Suddenly, he turned to leave. He's leaving!, she thought to herself, but I still have many unanswered questions!

She had made her decision. She closed her eyes and concentrated. She felt herself growing taller and she felt the cool air as the fur disappeared. She opened her eyes.

"Wait!" she called out, crossing her fingers, that his reaction wouldn't be offensive.

Jonathon's eyes widened once again. "Oh, God I'm going crazy.... the cat is talking now..."

He turned around, only to see a girl where the cat had been. "What — how — who — AHHHHH!" He nearly fell over, but stopped himself. This was, after all, a school for kids who had powers. Perhaps she was also a student.

"Um... uh..." he was at a loss for words, and decided he'd let her do the talking.

Valaina felt like laughing. This was the most fun she'd had in a long time. Instead, she kept a serious, friendly expression.

"Please, don't be frightened. I won't hurt you," she said gently, taking a step forward. "My name's Valaina. I was just sitting in the tree when I noticed you walking by. You did something strange to the trees; they had no color left in them. Why did you do it?" she tried to hide the anger in her voice as she spoke.

She didn't want to seem angry, even thought she was, in fact, furious that he thought he could just walk through and practically destroyed the beautiful forest. Especially in the season as pretty as autumn, with all the beautiful colors of leaves.

As soon as she took a step forward, Jonathon took a step backward. He wanted to keep away from her... she seemed nice, but that didn't mean she was. He looked at the ground, trying to think of the right words to say.

"Um... well... uh... I kind of lost it... I mean... well..." he sighed. This situation was making him not going well, not at all. He decided he'd start from the beginning. "Um... well... my power is color. I can change the color of things, drain their color, or add color. I hate colors though, especially bright ones... the world would be better of if it were just in black and white. And since my dorm is kind of colorful, it's not the best place for me to concentrate or sleep... I can't change the colors, because my room mates probably wouldn't be happy about that. I haven't slept in a few nights, and I figured that if I drained the color from a few trees I could get to sleep. I was going to put the color back in the morning, I really was..."

That was the whole story, and it was the truth, too. He looked up at the girl for a moment, then returned to looking at the ground.

Valaina was speechless. She didn't know what to say. He didn't look like he was lying and she couldn't think of a better explanation for his actions. She could tell he was telling the truth.

"Uh..well, I guess you had good intentions. I think," she said, still lost for words. She now felt very uncomfortable. She shifted her weight and looked at the ground.

"I'm sorry. I thought you were ruining the forest. I guess you can change the colors if you want," she said, regretting she had even started this conversation. She quickly added, "Just make sure to change them back."
