Everything was... wrong. The leaves on the tree were blurred. The grass was blindingly bright. The howls of a werewolf felt far away and like it was inside of Sela's head. It mixed with the neverending static. Staying alert was becoming harder and harder. One mistake and they would find themself in their dream world. Their body would be vulnerable to anyone who came past it.

The forest was one of the only places Sela could find peace. There were people here, hunting and hiking and playing games, but they were minding their own business. Sela was allowed to curl up in a ball underneath a large tree and stare off into the scenery. The constantly shifting scenery. That was the problem of being a dream entity. The awake world wasn't meant for them. What was stable for others was wrong for Sela.

That included the people. Time and time again Sela tried to meet the school's expectations, and time and time again they failed. They couldn't even go to Roland or Ophiel in case they decided that they needed more of the school's support. All that trust they built up would go down the drain. At least here, they didn't have to talk to anyone. They could let the rainbow tears drip from their face and disappear into nothing.

Dezzie was on a mission: She was a one-person forest clean up crew within the forest. But she wasn't picking up litter.

No, Dezzie's true mission was to find dead animals. Preferably, old dead animals. Why did she even need to go to school when this was clearly the perfect job for her? She cleaned the forest of dead carcasses AND got free food! It was...a social service? Maybe?

She roamed through the forest in her large demon form, occasionally getting some curious looks. A nearby picnicking couple watched as she started digging around in a bush, and were not exactly thrilled when she pulled a dead deer out.

But it was too fresh for Dezzie. In cases like this, she would try to find a spot to bury the body and then come back later when it was more decomposed. She could feel the eyes on her though, and decided she should maybe drag it somewhere away from people.

So she picked the body up with the large mouth on her stomach and headed deeper into the forest. She found a large tree, which seemed like a decent enough spot to start digging. She dropped the dead deer out of her mouth and started sniffing around for the right kind of spot. Heading toward some bushes, she stepped through them and proceeded to bump right into Sela.

She yelped and jumped back.

Sela was used to people passing by here. Generally, they were ignored when in this form. An adult who needed to be on their own was what people thought. No need to bother them. And good. Sela was happy about that. Their child form made people treat them more kindly, but their adult form made people respect them or stay away. Every form had a purpose.

Which this one failed when some wolf—No, a giant dog? Hyena? A giant hyena "bumped" into them. And by bumped, it was more like it almost went through their body before jumping back.

The yelp was what really got Sela. They yelped back and hid behind the tree they were sitting by. Behind the tree they managed to calm themself enough to realize they were in no real harm.

"Sorry. I didn't mean to..." Be in the way? That wasn't fair to them. "yell back."

"Huh?"

The demon tilted her head.

"I think I'm the one who is supposed to say sorry. I'm the one that bumped into you..."

Then she thought about it and shook her head. Had she even bumped into them?

"Actually, I saw you but I didn't actually feel you..." she said, blinking. "Did I go through you? Did it hurt??" she asked, halfway concerned and halfway curious.

Only a few seconds into the conversation and Sela was already frustrated with themself. What the stranger said was right, she (they were pretty sure she was a she based on her voice) should be the one apologizing based on the logical progression of things. And yet, Sela messed up and apologized instead.

The stranger not lingering on the subject helped ease their rising tension. "You went through me. It did not hurt." Losing control of their body and becoming stuck wasn't all too pleasant, however. "I can't feel and my body is malleable. Please don't worry."

Dezzie tilted her head like a confused dog. Then she sat down on her haunches, staring at Sela with a curious squint.

"So I went through you...and you don't feel pain..."

Her eyes widen.

"That's amazing! What else can you do? Do you go through stuff? Or can you make yourself really small to fit in tiny places? You don' feel anything at all? Can I ask what you are, or is that rude?"

She paused. Her previously wagging tail thumped to the ground.

"Sorry. I'm being too nosy, right? I just haven't been on the island very long, so I just get really curious..."

Sela tilted their head back at Dezzie. "Nosy?" Myst had to feed them the definition telepathically. "You're only asking questions... I'm not uncomfortable." Presumably that's what she thought they were.

"I can change... my shape in a number of ways. I can be... very tiny... or big... I only feel when I'm asleep. In the dream world."

The pause when asked what they were spanned much longer than the other ones. "I don't know. The school doesn't know. I'm Sela. That's my name. That's what I am. What's your name?"

"Oh, I'm Dezzie!" She replied, feeling a little silly that she had not said her name earlier.

"I'm just a plain ol' gluttony demon," She added, a cheeky grin on all her mouths. Her tail began to sway behind her as she considered Sela's explanation.

"Is that where you're from then? The dream world? I didn't even realize that dreams were a separate world..."

"I am a dream world," they replied, trying to put as much emphasize on the word am as possible. "I'm a living world." They wondered if there would ever be a day where explaining that wouldn't feel complicated.

"I've met demons before. Hellions or Inquitii are the ones that have sins associated with them, yes?"

Dezzie squinted. It wasn't a skeptical squint though--it was a squint of Dezzie trying to figure out how a living world could also be a person talking to her.

"So...there are dreams inside you because you're a world of dreams. But you're also a world that can, um...you can take a form and talk and wander on this world too. Is it like that?"

"Or am I getting it entirely wrong?" Every mouth gave a sheepish smile.

"Oh, yeah, kinda like that. I don't think I'm considered either of those though." She shrugs.
