Practicing

Aiva was looking for an empty, quiet place for her to practice her invisibility. She wasn't very good at it, and sometimes everything would disappear but her arms, or she could only disappear up to her waist. She really needed to get some practice in.

She walked from room to room, until she found what she was looking for. An old mirror covered in dust hung on the wall. She walked over to it. She began to wipe the dust of it, coughing and weezing as the dust particles flew up in the air. There was a large crack in the mirror, which distorted the reflection that stared back at her. "It'll have to do," she thought out loud.

She began to concentrate. She stared at her reflection until it began to fade. It didn't take long before she was completely vanished. It only lasted a few seconds though. When she reappeared she rubbed her hands together to create warmth. Whenever she managed to disappear, for some reason it always made her cold.

She tried it again. Staring at her reflection, she concentrated on becoming invisible. This time all but her feet disappeared. She reappeared and tried again. This time, all but her clothes disappeared.

"Ugggh!!!!" She screamed in frustration. She tried again, this time completely disappearing. While invisible, she walked around the room. She picked up an object, looking in the mirror at the reflection. It amused her how it appeared the object was just floating. She put it back down and went over to a chair off to the site. She picked up the chair to move it so she could be seated but still see herself in the mirror. As she was moving the chair, she glanced up to see if she was still invisible. The reflection showed that she was, but she was surprised to see no chair in the reflection. The chair had disappeared as well! Before she could figure anything else, she reappeared in the relfection along with the chair.

"I can make objects disappear as well!" She mused. She tried it again, but couldn't get anything to happen. She was shivering uncontrollably, and thought maybe she should give it a rest for a few minutes.

Shirese was padding through the empty hallways, wondering why she'd never seen this part of the school before. It was, she mused, probably because she'd never been in the actual school before. Well, except for classes, but she always ran out as soon as they were finished, back outside where no one could find her.

She yawned, throwing both arms in the air dramatically. She'd swore to herself that she'd actually start looking at the school, and the seemingly abandoned third floor looked like the perfect place to start. Even this was making her uncomfortable, however - she was jumping at every sound, and no matter how hard she tried she couldn't stop planning the best escape route in case someone popped out on her.

She crouched down to the floor, picking up a dust coated pencil and sniffing it curiously. Why was this place abandoned, anyway?

"Ugggh!!!!" A scream of - what was it? Anger? Frustration? Fear? Shirese couldn't tell - rang through the halls, and her head jerked up. Someone was here after all... She slowly stood up, drifting transparent and creeping silently towards the sound. Maybe someone needed help - not that they'd want it from her, but still.

She poked her head in the door the noise had come from, frowning at the sight of the cold girl and, against her better judgment, turning visible. "Hello," she muttered guardedly, staying visible long enough for the girl to notice her and quickly fading from sight again - just in case she wasn't happy to see her. "What is wrong, student?"

Aiva could barely keep in her excitement. "You..you just turned invisible!" She cried, standing up from the chair so quickly she knocked it over. She didn't want to scare the girl, so she quickly calmed herself down.

"My name is Aiva," she began, her eyes scanning the area where she had seen the girl. "My power is invisibility too." she said. "I was just practicing. I'm not very good at it. Perhaps you could help me? Maybe the way we generate our power is similar...I could really use your help." Since the girl had not reappeared just yet, she wondered if she was still there, or if she had just been talking to an empty room.

There was a long pause while Shirese decided, finally stepping fully into the room and sliding the door mostly shut with a loud creak.

"Hello, Aiva." She spread her fingers towards the girl in what she thought looked quite like that greeting everyone liked to use, suddenly realizing that she couldn't see them and swirling visible again.
"I am Shirese." She grinned pointly, taking one step closer to the girl across the room. "What is the problem? Can you not yet stop yourself from dissappearing, or is it the other way around?" She was surprised that the girl wanted her help, and didn't want to ruin it by assuming something... Besides, it'd been so long since she'd not had powers, she'd forgotten how she'd started out.

"Well, I'm having trouble staying invisible. It lasts a couple seconds, but then I reappear again. It sure is frustrating." Aiva sighed, placing the chair upright. "I've been watching myself in the mirror here, and the best I've done so far was maintaining the invisibility for about 5 minutes. It's a record for me, actually. Here, I'll show you."

Aiva walked a couple steps away from Shirese. Normally, she wouldn't think of practicing in front of anyone, but she knew Shirese would like to help, and if she could actually see her troubles, it may make it easier for her to offer advice.

She was determined for this to work. After all, she did have an audience. She closed her eyes, and concentrated. When she finally had the guts, she opened her eyes, and looked to her right at the mirror. She was disappointed to see that everything disappeared except her arms.

"And sometimes this happenes." she said with a huge disappointing sigh. "And usually when something like this happens, it could stay like this for a long time." She was glad her face was invisible, for Shirese could not see how red her face was from embarrassment. However, seconds later, the rest of her body began to slowly become visible again. She brought her hands up to her face to hide the blush. "I am so humilated right now. Did this ever happen to you? Do you know what my problem is? Do I just need practice?"

She watched, hopping up onto the desk behind her and crossing her legs.

"I am so humilated right now. Did this ever happen to you? Do you know what my problem is? Do I just need practice?"

Her eyes widened, and she raised her hands defensively. She was fairly certain humiliation was the bad emotion, like embarassed but worse. "Humiliated? Nej, nej... You should not feel that. It happened to me many times. Practice will fix your problem, but..." She paused, chewing on her lip. "I do not know the way teachers show this power; my sisters had it, though, and concentrating only is not the way we learned."

She jumped off the table, holding her arms in front of her. "If I concentrate only, I am saying to my hands 'become invisible!'" She frowned down at them, and they finally dissappeared. "But now, I must continue to say this to my hands, or they will forget that this is what I want them to do." She wasn't entirely sure how to say this; she paused, thinking, her hands swirling back into sight.

"If you can remember what it feels like to be invisible... You feel... Ah, it is impossible to explain, yes? Exactly the same, but so different, like everyone else is in different dimension... And instead of invisibility itself, concentrate on the feeling of invisibility..." She was going transparent, and she waved an arm in the air as evidence. "And when you are both invisible and visible, just... Snap." She dropped out of sight, waving a hand at the girl experimentally. "It takes practice, yes, but eventually you can use it without thinking... And I believe it is easier to uphold then if you had to give your power all your concentration."
