Physics class, bright and early in the — well. Not morning, but twelve noon was close enough. Jia An was a woman not usually given to the wee hours before larks were singing their dawn songs, but she'd been prepping this lesson ever since she'd arrived at Starlight. She wanted to look cool, really; be that one teacher with amazing notes and a laid-back, friendly personality. The teacher whose class was surprisingly difficult to score in, but was definitely doable if one only studied well. This lesson. Well, this lesson was in the lab, away from the more humanities-based classrooms in the Academy and near her own room.

She still wasn't very used to 'homerooms' and 'prep time' but she was sure she'd get the hang of it. Eventually. On the teacher's bench lay three balloons: one filled with sulfur hexafluoride gas, one with normal air, and one with helium. As one of the school's lab technicians, it was easier for her to get access to them, though she still had to be careful with the resources. She wasn't made of money, after all.

This class was more for the lower-levels of highschoolers, Jia An figured. The Upper Levels (or juniors?? twelfth-graders??? what????) probably already knew these, and Jia An was also pretty sure her kids knew too. She just wanted to start off fun. On the students' benches she had prepared a thin sheet of aluminium foil per student, and a measuring cylinder of sulfur hexafluoride gas, covered with a petri dish lid.

So all there was to do now, the teacher mused, was wait.

Setting: Physics Laboratory

To say Raella had some free time was an understatement; she had no lessons for the rest of the day. Morning classes had just ended and her brain was officially fried and saturated. Most of her batchmates have headed off for the dorms or cafeteria, however, Raella was full, bored and unoccupied. A terrible and possibly even dangerous combination. Thankfully, destruction and roguery weren't on the top of her mind right now; instead, Raella skipped off to see her favourite teacher, Li Jia An, whom without a doubt would be found in a science lab.

Standing at the doorway to the physics lab, Raella spotted the winged beauty, thriving in her element - science. In front of her were rows upon rows of student's table all stacked with the same simple apparatus. Well, since the class hasn't arrived yet, a little intrusion seemed in order.

"Class running a little late I see."

Striding into the laboratory, Raella threw a small wink at Jia An before making her way to the teacher's table. Lips curved to form a sly smile, Raella then continued, her voice light and tone teasing.

"So how's teaching?"

and yes i 100% replied to this open thread for the december challenge because im lazy to do it another day HAHA

An waited.

And waited.

And waited.

Huh. Class should have started five minutes ago — wait.

Why was she not surprised that Raella was showing her face again? An’s face twisted into a frown at the sight, though it probably wasn’t for the reason Raella would think was. She composed herself, wings settling behind her in a movement too slow to be casual.

”So it would seem,” said the teacher. She was disappointed; she’d planned quite a bit for this lesson and acquiring the materials hadn’t been the easiest. Re-gathering the gas was going to be hell on her.

”So how’s teaching?”

An gave it some thought.

At first she said nothing. She merely stood behind her laboratory table and stared at Raella. Then she began to speak, sigh escaping from her lips. ”Tiring.”

Distantly she questioned why she was telling the demon that, then attributed it to her exasperation.

Raella watched in amusement as Jia An's expression morphed into a frown; it happened so often that it brought a sense of familiarity and ironically, comfort. However, it seemed as though she was plagued with a lingering touch of disappointment. It was no surprise though; rarely did a class run late or miss the lesson entirely. After having observed this reaction, Raella vowed to do her best to arrive on time. Teachers were humans too and they deserved every bit of respect as anyone else.

In any case, since the universe had presented her with this valued opportunity of another meeting with Jia An, she might as well make the most of it. Placing an elbow on the table, she released the tension in her back and slumped forward in a relaxed posture. Voice dropping to a lower octave and coming across as a teasing yet suggestive purr, she then addressed the teacher "Well, perhaps I could make it more exciting." Should the oversized bird choose not to react, Raella would gladly let a delicate silence settle between the two for a few moments.

"Just kidding!" Taking a step back, she briefly stretched her wings before folding them once more, her tail still drawing lazy circles mid-air.

"Y'know I'm still hoping you'd give me access to those chemicals for...research purposes."

”And I,” An deadpanned, ”Am still waiting for you to give up on that silly idea.”

Contrary to popular belief, An felt nothing at all saying that to Raella. The girl was seventeen, for goodness’ sake! She should know better than to be fooling about with things she didn’t understand. Her tone was curter than she would have liked, but the quicker Raella realised An wasn’t going to give in, the quicker she could give up such notions.

Raella was growing on her, but Jia An was still a teacher and she wasn’t allowed to let students do stupid things, no matter how many letters “student” shared with “stupid”.
