It had been a couple weeks of fairly steady research and pain. Theo's search for answers to his eye problem came to a head upon realizing the answer had been there the whole time. Fusing oneself to an eldritch being to gain power was even more risky than contracting one as a familiar. His parents truthfully lucked out with Simon. The eldritch being wasn't exactly gentle, but he was gentle enough, as well as very loyal. He'd been with him through every moment in his life. Naturally the thought of going through with this plan to regain his vision scared him. He heard the sounds of reassurance from Simon as well as the nasty taunts from Alvin who was messing with his eyes more than usual, in a last ditch effort to prevent this thing from happening.

Theo was sitting on the edge of a large ritual circle in the center of his game room floor. Simon was located directly across from him on the other end. The ritual would involve partially dissolving and rebuilding the bonds he had with the two eldritch beings by fusing their bodies with his. Theo and Simon began chanting with great focus as the circle activated itself. No one was going to give him pitying looks that he couldn't see anymore. He wasn't going to hear the butlers and maids whispering their concerns like he couldn't still hear them. Theo couldn't see anything that was happening, he could only focus on the chanting. He could feel an odd sensation through the core of his being. Like something constricting and melting into him. The noise in his head seemed to be shifting around as well. Theo had already theorized that the eldritch beings wouldn't actually merge with his consciousness, instead they'd form satellite consciousnesses within his mind. These thoughts swirled in his head until he finally blacked out after running out of chanting to recite.

He wasn't sure how much time had passed since he blacked out, but he could hear two separate voices telling him to get up. He did so, slowly and steadily, waiting until he was on his feet to finally open his eyes. He winced briefly, but his eyes seemed to adapt to the light quicker than he would have expected them to. Something was new with his vision as well, he was seeing things he normally would, however it felt more detailed. He could hear a pair of voices buzzing in his head speaking with him. One was Simon who simply noted that things seemed to have gone off without any issue. The other voice was Alvin, who seemed to be bitterly accepting his fate. He went into the bathroom to check himself more thoroughly in the mirror. His face was a mess from the black ichor that had been leaking from his eyes over the weeks. Was this what people were seeing when they looked at him? It was so bad. His hair had also grown a bit, it was still well kept thanks to Simon being there. Actually, it looked like he had grown a bit himself and his muscles were much more defined. Then there was the case of his right eye. His left eye was blue and normal looking, the right eye was black where it should have been white and his pupil was a lightly glowing red. He washed his face off with soap and water, then proceeded to measure his height. He was a solid 5'9". Was his because of the ritual or had he actually grown that much in such a short time? That led to more questions. What else had changed? He honestly felt normal, aside from the new sensations.

Theo tossed on a black shirt, black pants, and a red tie just to add some more color. He fixed up his hair, grab his personal effects, and proceeded to head down and out of the manor, saying nothing to anyone as he left. The Riddle Effect had put his brother in a rather nasty spot and he wanted to see it with his eyes. Before he left the grounds, he stopped at the garage. There was something he wanted to test. Something he'd noticed in the bathroom was Simon passively holding him back, somehow. It was hard to explain with words. But it was like he was...stronger perhaps? He moved to the back of one of the cars, put two hands under the bumper, and to his surprise, he was able to lift it up with relative ease. His physical ability had gone up a good bit. Theo then proceeded to set the car down gently and sprint off the property, jumping the gate as he did so.

It didn't even feel like a very long time before he was at Kylar's apartment. This new awareness seemed to notice gaps in patterns, allowing for him to find slightly more efficient routes to take. He simply went up to Kylar's apartment door and knocked. There was no warning that he was coming this time. This visit was meant to be a surprise.

Kylah had been burritoed in a pile of blankets most of the day, sat on her couch and watching television. It had been like that nearly a whole week.

Where before sensations came and went, it was now a constant and she was an emotional wreck. Jealousy, envy, shame, and the full range of emotions she felt was just terrible. She would have done anything in her power to push them away and go back to that state of utter content boredom.

When a knock at her door came, Kylah was quiet for a long time, muting the T.V. and listening. She wasn't expecting anyone. She figured it was most likely to be Adalwolf, but the knock was all wrong for that. Self-assured but still soft and not exactly agitated enough. He also didn't call out her nickname.

Kylah undid her blankets and stood to answer the door, still in pajamas and hair mussed. She stared at Theo for a long moment, focused on his new eye and how much taller he had gotten.

Well, shit.

Kylah's fist instinct was to slam the door in Theo's face. She wasn't in a good mood, and he was likely to hit her. She didn't want to feel... not anything. She didn't want to feel a damn thing.

Instead, she stood to the side and let him in without a word.

The silence externally was a stark contrast to the chatter happening within Theo's mind as both Alvin and Simon seemed to be bonding, making snarky comments about Kylah's demeanor. Theo himself kind of just let the exchange happen, silently agreeing without saying anything out loud. Is this just how she was dealing with the virus? it was kind of sad, really. That smugness was just gone. He could empathize if he really wanted to, but where's the fun in that? She let him in without a word so he entered without a word.

This new perception was a tricky thing, his mind just flooding with more information than he was used to. His sister had become a shut in because the world hurt and she felt emotions. Everything he saw reeked of "I have no friends and never leave my house". This needed to stop, if nothing else maybe, just maybe he could help kick her out of this. "I guess you're not wondering what happened then. I mean it's obvious what happened. But really, nothing?"

He was almost disappointed by the lack of intrigue. He thought his sister liked it when he showed off weird shit. Now that he wasn't quite so human anymore he got nothing. Not even a snide remark about performing a ritual right. Oh well, he had plenty of things to say. "So, when are you gonna stop acting like Cat? Or should we dye your fucking hair pink to go along with this new shitty you?"

Kylah shrugged, seemingly disinterested as she went to the kitchen at got Theo a beer, which she proceeded to toss at him. "You did another ritual, and you did it right this time," she answered.

She placed her hands on the counter and leaned on it, head down. Not submissively but wearily. Kylah sighed, the sound both defeated and frustrated. She knew she looked like a damn loser right now and maybe to him, a boy who had felt all these things before, this was an easy problem to fix. For Kylah, it was all just chaos and bullshit.

Both Ada and Theo had been using it to practically torture her, and personally, Kylah was pissed off enough that she didn't want to see anyone lately. When she left the house, it was to shift and hunt. Bury her teeth in fur and spill blood.

"Fuck off, Theo. If you just come over here to insult me, you can get the fuck out of my place. I really don't want to hear it."

And she didn't. Where she hadn't cared enough to do anything before, Kylah thought she might lose her self-control and use her pain magic on him. Or any number of other things that would end badly.

Theo caught the beer and studied it for a brief moment. It was as if the thing was some foreign object, but he knew what it was. He popped open the bottle and drank it, chugging it down like it was water. It tasted, well it tasted ordinary compared to the stuff he'd been consuming lately. He wondered just how different his taste buds were, he had so many things he wanted to test.

His sister meanwhile had taken offense to his comment on her holing up in her apartment. It was true, and he wasn't one for being gentle with these kinds of things. He frowned at how impractical she was being. He kind of wanted to kick her in the face, but then he'd have to deal with cleaning up a sniveling bloody mess of a sister. "I mean, you can always try to kick me out. But seriously, what if all this just lasts forever? What if there's nothing that can be done? You still just gonna be a baby? You might as well learn to manage now."

He doubted anything he said would stick, Kylah had the emotional capacity of a toddler. Just yell and break things, that'll solve your problems. What does a predator do when their prey suddenly decides to fight for its life? Knowing her that wasn't even something that was factored in. "Oh yeah, don't go to that quarantine shit. That's about as sketchy as that miracle cure. What the hell even is this month?"

"I don't know, Theo," Kylah said as she grabbed her face and slid down the fridge to sit on the floor. "I don't know."

She sighed and hung her head briefly before looking up into the ceiling, squinting at the bright lights there. She was better than she had been before. Things didn't hurt so much, or maybe she'd just built some tolerance to it, but it was all overwhelming and...

"It doesn't fucking help that every time I turn around you and Ada are annoying the piss out of me. Did you seriously just come over here to kick me around?"

Prey was about the only comfort Kylah still had. She understood animals. Being one, talking to one, reacting to one, even fighting one. She didn't get people or emotions, though. But when she was an animal, she didn't have to. She thought in the here and now. She traveled with instinct.

Now this bullshit.

"I didn't plan on going to the quarantine. I don't want to be locked up with all those sick fucks. And this month is shit is what it is."

Kylah paused, then looked at Theo long enough to actually take in all his new and improved details. "At least your eyesight is back," she said, voice softer and with a tinge of genuine concern.

Truth be told Theo's initial plan was to come over and bully Kylah, not much but just a little bit. But after seeing her like this it just wasn't fun. Like kicking a puppy, but not quite. Maybe roadkill that wasn't quite dead yet. What good is harassing a sibling if they're not even really going to fight back. He frowned and just sat down next to her, if you can't hit 'em, join 'em.

"God damn, you gotta get back into the 'I don't give a shit' head space. Like lie to yourself until it dulls out. On the other hand, maybe I'm not the best person to give this type of advice because I'm pretty fucked up myself. Especially now."

He just quietly patted her shoulder and went to thinking. This seemed like this month was getting to be a doozy for everyone. There was almost no one on the island who didn't know someone that was sick. The riddle effect, which made people who were unwell, healthy and energetic had an opposite effect on Kylah. Who was now a sad heap on the kitchen floor.

"I just wouldn't make any moves till they start rounding up culprits. Might go along with Alice and do some snooping. Wait, wasn't last year's fucking tsunami around this time?" He paused a moment then answered his own question, "It was. Three times makes a pattern, so if anything goes wrong next year..."

He touched his red eye and frowned, thinking about it. "Yeah, I'd been putting it off for a while. I'm not used to anything that's happened to me yet. I see in like higher definition now, and I can lift a car. Something's telling me there's more that I can do, so I need to dick around a bit. Fortunately school's out even though I was already getting home school curriculum from Starlight, so I'm just ahead in that department."

"I've tried," Kylah answered miserably.he laid her head against Theo's in one of the first genuine shows of sibling affection she'd ever given.

It wasn't just this, all the stupid physical pain of life. It was all those agonizing facts Kylah had never cared about before. Her parents hadn't wanted her. She was too fucked up for this world. She didn't belong. There wasn't much to live for beyond killing and screwing. Those were sad facts that she would live with when she had the mind of an animal, but not one of a human.

Kylah was quiet as she listened to Theo discuss everything in his calm, cutting way. She'd never appreciated it before, but Theo's life was kind of shit too. How did he handle all of it? How did he get up time and again and not care? How had she never seen this before?

Kylah gave a laugh and a light sob, something between happy and mournful with no real footing in either of those emotions. She turned her face into his, trying to hold back tears. Kylah had never cried before. It felt terrible, but nice too. A release.

"I don't know why you're being so nice to me," she said, confused by this turn of events.

Suddenly, she stood up and walked around the apartment to grab some clothing and a jacket. "Let's go dick around, then."

Theo didn't tense when Kylah put her head on his shoulder, but he wasn't really sure what to do. They weren't really the affectionate kind of siblings. Regardless of gender, there was always some degree of playful aggression or just outright aggression. The riddle effect made shit weird. Now she was crying and he didn't know how to deal with that. Kylah just had to get hit with the one strain that made everything healthy, or rather "healthy". If it had come gradually, maybe she could have gotten used to it, but no, a truck hit her onto some train tracks and as she was getting up the train hit her. Physically and mentally Kylah was a walking talking open wound and the world was just salt. These assholes were going to pay dearly for this.

"I mean you used to fight back in a fun way. Now it's like I'm actually bullying you, that's not as fun. So you and Red Skull can dismember each other when you fuck or whatever. I'm gonna try and find a solution."

There was a hint of surprise in his expression when Kylah got up and started grabbing clothes to wear. He would have been content hanging out on the couch watching tv, this was fine though too. If she wanted to go out, sure why not? He stood up and waited for her to get dressed.

"Sheesh I haven't even looked into places to dick around in. But if you're down I guess I'm down too. It's not like there aren't places where we can break stuff."

Another snort of laughter. Kylah reached up and wiped her tears away with some level of dedication. She wouldn't cry because she wasn't a baby and she'd never cried before and didn't want to start now.

Once she was dressed and more or less looked presentable, Kylah opened the door for Theo. "Don't worry, I've got a place in mind."

Kylah took them to a large clearing somewhere between the forest and beach. A place for a particular group of kids who liked fucking around and had a destructive streak.

The clearing wasn't natural but made through fire and blunt force. In it was a convoluted and unsteady obstacle course. It was too varied (and poorly made) to tell exactly what it was for. Skateboarding? Training?

Toward the back of the clearing, where trees opened up and gave away to a small cliff that overlooked a messy beach was a small clubhouse. A series of chairs and couches, between them a fireplace which had recently been snuffed, and multiple empty beer bottles.

Kylah gave Theo one of her signature smug looks as she showed him around. "These kids are assholes. They'll be pissed if we break their things, but who really cares? Where do you want to start?"
