Finished Pasta Making Shouldn't Be This Hard

Hearing the initial whatever that Ferret gave him was hardly surprising. He wasn't sure why he even bothered. But then she did something that did surprise him, she actually did listen. Despite the words she used, her actions seemed to prove it.

She even thanked him? Carmin was pretty shocked by that part. It took him a moment to register what happened in his head, eventually spitting out a reply. "You're welcome." He then continued with his dough, rolling it as best he could until it became flat.

Once finished, Carmin looked around the room trying to figure out what was next. "I think we put them in the pasta maker now?"

Deciding to trust - against her better judgment - that everything was alright at Carmin's and Ferret's station, Celeste took her piece of rolled out dough and put it to the side for a moment. Then she grabbed a large pot and filled it partway with water and added some salt.

'Before you start doing anything else, I'd suggest that it's a good idea to put some water to boil on the stove," she told the class as she placed her pot on the stove and turned the fire up high. "Add about two tablespoons of salt to the water," she told them.

"If you are not sure you have the right amount, taste the water with a spoon. It should taste salty like sea water," she explained, hoping the comparison was helpful.

Ferret simply gave a huff and stiff shrug at Carmin's response to her thanks. Just because they were getting along slightly better now didn't exactly mean the cooperation would last, so she didn't intend to get her hopes up. At the plant kid's suggestion she gave the pasta machine a wary glance, not exactly being the most well versed with mechanical stuff.

Celeste, however, grabbed her attention much more immediately. She got to do something with fire now? Fuck yeah! That was way cooler than the little metal crank thing. Ferret wasted no time at all in filling up their pot with water and tossing in a dash of salt, then went ahead and just...turned all of the burners up to high, staring at the flames and grinning. "Woah. That's super pretty."

Right, boil the water first, that made sense. Carmin hadn't even turned around yet, but he could hear noise coming from behind him. Ferret, no doubt, had already started. Giving a sigh, he watched as she filled up the pot with water and threw in the salt. He wanted to question if any of it was even the right amount, but he realized that he didn't actually know what the right amount was. So he kept his mouth shut and watched the relatively not as bad process unfold.

That was, until every one of their burners was set to the highest possible setting. His eyes opened wide with fear at the sight of it, taking a step backwards as if on instinct. He managed to calm himself down enough though, realizing that there was little danger here. "F-Ferret, we only need one of those." He kept his distance, gesturing to the burners hesitantly and hoping Ferret would turn them off.

Ferret had pretty much tuned Carmin out after she turned up the flames, and really the entirety of the class for that matter. Like she said, the fire really just looked pretty to her, and a part of her wished she could make even more, but that would probably end up with the teacher getting onto her more. So, reluctantly, she turned the rest of the unused burners down to low after about thirty seconds.

"There, happy? A compromise. We might not be using them for water, but I'm using them so I'm not bored to death. Unless." She paused, grinning down at the plant kid with just a hint of fang showing. "You have an idea to keep us entertained. I don't exactly plan on doing nothing while we're waiting for it to boil. Just gotta think of something the lady up front won't notice. Like..." Glancing to a boy at the station in front of them busy with the pasta maker, she smirked conspiratorially at Carmin before taking a few remarkably quiet steps forward and swiping a pack of fruity gum straight out of his back pocket without any of their classmates taking any apparent notice.

After she seemed to ignore him, Carmin would try again. "Ferret, please." The result was three unused burners getting turned down to low, which was better but still not exactly great. He wasn't happy with this and was ready to tell her once again to turn them off, but was met with a different potential solution. "Unless?" The grin she gave him made it pretty obvious that he wasn't going to like the rest of what she was going to say.

"Uh." Carmin wasn't exactly sure how to respond after she told him the rest. But it didn't look like that mattered, it seemed Ferret was about to demonstrate. Carmin watched with confusion as she walked up to one of their classmates. When she swiped the gum from his pocket, his eyes opened wide. She was good, nobody could even tell she'd done it, but that was beside the fact, it wasn't okay to steal things.

Carmin was very strictly against stealing. He whispered to her angrily as soon as she returned. "Ferret! You can't steal stuff, put it back!" He was clearly pretty upset about this.

Still at the front of the class, Celeste looked around the classroom, from station to station, to see if there were any problems or if anybody had any problems, not quite aware yet of the fact Ferret had turned on all the burners or that anything untoward was going on.

"Does anyone have any questions about the process so far?" she asked the room, looking for raised hands and not finding any.

"The water will take a little while to reach a good boil," she explained as she checked her own pot. "In the meantime, just make sure your dough is rolled out and ready to go through the pasta maker," she advised them since she knew that once the water started boiling everything would go fairly quick.

Ferret couldn't help but smirk at Carmin's panicked response, her pupils constricting once again just slightly. She spared a brief glance at the front of the room to confirm the teacher hadn't noticed, then gave a full on grin. Hell yeah, she'd gotten away with it! It was always exciting to pull off a bit of pickpocketing, even with something as inconsequential as gum.

Speaking in a hushed, conspiratorial tone, she leaned in to the plant kid and gave him a gentle jab with her elbow. "Relax, Cabbage Patch. It's only stealing if you get caught, and I never do." She paused, considering what had landed her here in the first place, then tapped her chin. "...Almost never. The point is, it's fun, and he's not gonna miss it. Here." Pulling two sticks out, she unwrapped one and popped it into her mouth, then held the other one out to her partner with a hand on her hip. "C''mon, you know you want to...also, if you tell I'll kick your ass, and I don't really wanna do that."

Cabbage Patch, really? Just when she was starting to get half tolerable, of course she'd pull some stupid stunt like this. Carmin clenched his fists as Ferret went on to explain stealing to him. He listened to what she said, but none of it meant anything to him, it was all nonsense as far as he was concerned. He scrunched his face up in detest as she explained that she would beat him up if he tried telling on her.

"Really, you think it's just fun?" Speaking in angry whispers, Carmin was completely disgusted with her. He pushed her hand away, rejecting the very thought of accepting that stupid piece of gum. He couldn't even taste gum, but that wasn't the reason for pushing it away. He just couldn't ever bring himself to partake in theft.

"I'm not going to tell on you." Carmin was afraid of Ferret and had no trouble believing that she would come after him if he ratted her out, but this time anger seemed to win over fear. "Just..." He stood his ground, whispering back at her. "Put-It-Back!" He spoke through his teeth, refusing to budge on the subject.

The teacher had said something during this that Carmin hadn't quite paid attention to, but judging by the other students at the other stations, it mustn't have been too important.

"Okay... It looks like the water is close to boiling," Celeste said after a few minutes as she looked to Carmin and Ferret and noticed that they appeared to be discussing something between themselves. However, it did not seem - at least from where she was standing - like they were outright quarreling like before.

"Now is the time to run the dough through the pasta maker. You will run it through 2 or 3 times so it becomes quite thin. Then you will take the thin dough and run it through this part here..." she said showing them the part that actually cut the dough into noodles.

"It is easier if one of you holds onto the dough as the other turns the crank," she told the class, looking very pointed at Carmin and Ferret as she added. "You need to work together."
