The Lionesses had made it near the outskirts of the tower where the Princess was being held. But lately they'd been stymied by the strange magics of the land around it. Dark magic that had terrain shifting and changing without warning. A small river had blocked their path one day and then when they returned after going to sleep on Manta Carlos the next night the river was gone again.

In the hopes of finding a way through or around this mess they decided to split up. With Seyyal escorting Lottie towards a plume of smoke in the distance while the others followed another lead. Perhaps the mage could find a way to learn more about this enchantment, but at the very least stopping anyone from discovering their camp would be good.

Seyyal used a ragged cloth to wipe the sand and sweat off her forehead as she walked and turned towards her friend Lottie. "Not sure I can help too much with this magic- if I can find a person doing it we're golden but just the magic? I'm hoping maybe we can find something for you to do the magic thing with and disable it."

Lottie licked her fingers and flipped through another page in her grimoire, more focused on it then where she was going. They are so close to their goal and yet... as always it seems that sinister forces are at work always working against them. Just yesterday there was uncharted river that blocked their way only for it to vanish in their sleep! If magic was a play then these where no small feats... for the mana needed to change the landscapes so quickly and erratically... not even her entire family brought together could manage anything of the sort even together! As much as she didn't want to admit it... this might just be out of her league.

"Ah... hopefully we can find a clue once we are there. But... well I keep looking over over my grimoire and... see if I can come up with any anything in the meantime!" assured Lottie, hardly looking up as she frantically flipped another page. Magic was her element so she was feeling all of the pressure of being only one in the party knowledgeable on what could be going on to think of... something!

Seyyal frowned. There wasn't much she could really do against magic. And Lottie seemed to be doing her best but... this was powerful stuff. She groaned and crouched a little lower as they walked. "Stay low, Lottie. I don't want anyone seeing us if that smoke is from a camp."

She took the lead but never moved too far from her friend, afraid that something might separate them and put Lottie in danger. Slowly they crept towards the smoke until they had to stop to take a break and rest. Seyyal popped her waterskin out to take a sip and glanced over at Lottie. "Hey, you doing ok? It's not your fault if this is something you can't just snap your fingers and stop"

"O-oh were- okay laying low." she snaps the grimoire closed and crouched down with Seyyal. Lottie followed her leader closely, inching closer and closer to the epicenter of the billowing smoke. That is until they forced to come to a stop.

"Oh you know me... I am always doing okay. Hee..." said Lottie, smiling yet looks away sheepishly for a moment. After some reflection she looks back to her friend whiling wearing a brave face"I just.... we just need find the source of all this disturbance and... figure it out from there."

It was more something that she was telling herself than she was to Seyyal. She can't have her friend doubting her now when there is so much on the line!

"W-we should p-probably get going again." insisted Lottie as she does a quick scan of the area.

Seyyal nodded at her friend but had the very distinct impression that she might not have been doing quite as okay as she claimed. They were all pretty worried about things- both in their world and with the weird connection they had to Manta Carlos. The Lionesses didn't let fear stop them though so she put her game face back on and grinned at Lottie.

"I know you'll figure something out. That's why you're the magic brains of the outfit." And if she didn't.. well surely they'd be some jerk of a mage to beat up or some crazy crystal puzzle for them to break in an unexpected way to get through this. They never get stopped for too long. Never.

"Right, we can't make the others wait too long or they'll start taunting us, " she chuckled and then began leading Lottie again through increasingly tall, dry grasses. The stalks rasping slightly as they brushed against them. It shouldn't have been too much further but glancing into the sky the smoke still seemed to be about as far away as it had been an hour before. Weird.

"Usually do." piped up Lottie looking in a bit higher spirits "Heh... yeah. We wouldn't hear the end of it if just dawdled."

Peeking over the brush and makes out the billowing column of smoke, she got the sense they were strangely not any closer when they started out. Yet they been trekking for awhile. Was this just a trick of the mind or more magical nonsense afoot?

"So... are you able to make out anything Seyyal?" trying to squint at whatever there was at the distance. It was times like this she wished she had those binoculars just like the ones she saw on Manta Carlos.

Seyyal craned her neck and shielded her eyes with a hand but she couldn't make out much more than Lottie could. Strange. "We've been making pretty good time. I dont understand why we'd still be just as far away unless this is another trick."

This was frustrating and Seyyal closed her eyes for a moment to think. Not an uncommon thing for the Lionesses to see. There was limited information to work with but... they'd tried walking towards the smoke and it didn't work. "Could we walk backwards? Think ourselves closer? Lottie, any idea how we might break an illusion or some kind of trick like this?"

"Yeah... I don't quite understand it either." groaned Lottie whom lets out a big sigh. As frustrating as it was for the both of them they just can't seem to overcome their current predicament. When Seyyal spoke of the crazy idea that maybe they should start walking backwards, Lottie just laughed.

"Ha ha ha! Seyyal I don't think walking backwards will get us any-" Lottie then went quite as an epiphany came to mind. Without saying word Lottie gets up and takes 5 paces back, then takes 5 paces forward, then 10 spaces back and observes the smoke. She then consults her grimoire flipping furiously through a few pages.

"Aha! Seyyal your a genius!" she exclaimed as she snaps her book closed, then realized that there might be a bit of an explanation. Lottie then scampers over to Seyyal, looking quite excited as she explains what she believes is going on.

"It's a magical barrier! At a certain threshold it distorts space as we get closer to and makes it feel like we are walking an infinite distance. Whomever is inside is going though a lot of effort keeping everyone out but... there are a couple of ways I think we can get in."

Lottie then sternly looks to that unreachable pillar of smoke that seemed so far out once before.

"Usually such a barrier is linked to passphrase or a magical item that allows passage through the barrier unaffected. The problem... we would have to go around and hope to find someone on the outside who can let us in. Another way is to cause a local disruption to the barrier with a magical spell and slip in through the temporary gap. But for that we will need to be super quick before the barrier mends itself and closes. Another thing I was thinking though that is a bit more unorthodox... is that I could swap us with something already inside the barrier, then we can completely bypass the barrier altogether!"

She then rubs her right temple with her hand, feeling as though she has a bit of headache.

"At least that is the theory... what do you think is the best approach Seyyal? I wouldn't have figured the barrier if it wasn't for what you said."

Seyyal stared, dumbfounded, as Lottie began to get excited about the dumb ideas she had been throwing out in a hail mary attempt at kickstarting Lottie's magic brain.

She laughed, making no secret of being pleased at how excited Lottie was getting about the idea. "Lottie, Lottie. Hey, you're the genius. I just said some dumb stuff that helped you brainstorm," she said as she hugged her friend.

"Let's do it. What's the worst thing that's happen if you try swapping us anyway- we just don't get any closer? It has to be better than just trying to walk. Or walking backwards," she smiled and set about making sure all her gear was properly strapped down just in case the swap was a little less smooth than usual. "Your test subject is ready, oh great wizard Lottie"

"Ehh... theoretically there is a slight possibility that I could swap you right at the intersection of the barrier in which part of you will be infinitely stretch out like putty but the odds of that are like... as astonishingly low. So low that you would more likely to be struck by lighting 3 times in row or something." non-challenge mention Lottie with an indifferently shrug, then scans the horizon for something.

"Anywhooo... let's I'll need something on the other side to swap you with... like some sort of animal or a..." out in the distance she could see a vulture land on distant boulder "or THAT BIRD! Okay need to be quick about this but once you are on the other side you are going to have find something that I can swap myself with okay Seyyal? 3... 2... 1!"

In a flash of light, Seyyal disappears and is replaced by a confused vulture that quickly flies away from Lottie. Lottie backs away from the vulture as looks out for Seyyal whom is now on the rock, glad to see that she get turned into taffy.

"Ah it worked! Okay Seyyal I will need you to find something for me to swap with while you are over there okay! Just point it out to me when you find something!" called out Lottie as she waves from the other side.

Seyyal in the meanwhile, would be unable to hear Lottie though she is able to see her clearly wave to her trying to say something. From where Seyyal is, there is now clearly a some sort of magical shimmer separating the two of them, like some sort of piece of warped glass. While they are still somewhat away from the smoke column, they can hear some sort of faint music being played in its general direction they wasn't heard before.
