On the way to the dorm room

Akane took her time wandering through the corridors of the dormitory searching for her room. In one hand she held a heavy, old-fashioned suitcase and in the other Academy’s pamphlet with a map. She was amazed already by the first glance on the building from the outside, but the interior of the halls and corridors was so extraordinary that it left her speechless. So, although she was supposed to keep her eyes fixed on the map and find her room as soon as possible, she felt she’d rather endure the tiredness and be lost for some time just admiring the place.
‘This is far greater than it could have ever been in my imagination!’ she thought ‘Will someone like me, who came from an old, ramshackle shrine ever be able to get used to something like this?’

It was not only the place that fascinated her, but its residents too. There were so many different kinds of beings out there. They were all around the place, individually or in groups, running around, chattering... They all seemed to really enjoy their time at the Academy, whether they were students or employees. She wished she would soon turn from a lost newbie into a full-fledged participant in the everyday life of this community.
‘So this is where it really begins. It was easy with human beings, but with this many different kinds of beings it seems I’ll have my hands full studying from now on.’ she thought while putting her suitcase down to take a short break from the stroll. ‘Oh well, at least I will be able to interact properly with everyone, now that I can be the creature I really am.’ She smiled lightly and leaned against a wall listening to the murmurs of the dormitory hall.

Kenta was walking down the halls, his five silver tails swaying behind him, when a new face caught his eye. She had... a Kitsune mask? Two different colored eyes... And...
He stopped in front of her, and without missing a beat, bluntly asked; "Are you a Kitsune?" Their outfits we're similar too but... Where were her tails? Was she.. Maybe skilled enough to transform them away? That had to hurt though, right? Making his ears go away was hard enough...

After a couple of minutes’ break, Akane finally realized she was too tired to roam around for any longer. ‘There is plenty of time for exploring the place later, now where is my room actually...’ She started examining the map, when suddenly she felt a presence of someone familiar, and they were approaching her.
When she lifted her head, she could see that she didn’t make mistake. ‘It’s been a while, but my senses never miss to spot a kitsune.’

In front of her there was an adorable fox cub. The look he was giving her was quite funny and cute, but the question was something she didn’t really expect. There really are kitsune who do not know anything about Mount Inari protector’s successor.

“Well, yes, sort of.” she replied chuckling a bit. “And who are you? Have you been here for a long time?”
She thought that giving him her name first might ring a bell, but his confused look amused her, so she decided to just have some more fun hiding it.

His eyes lit up when she said this. "You are? I've never met another kitsune before!" He told her, excitedly zipping around her, examining her while spurting out endless questions. "Where are your tails, miss? And your ears? Can you transform too? Do you come from a shrine too? You're from Japan, right? What part? Why do you wear that mask?" At the end of this string, he suddenly stopped in front of her. "Oh, I'm Kenta by the way. And not really. I've only been here a couple months."

She was barely able to stand on the spot trying not to lose sight of him while he circled around inspecting her. “Oi, oi, slowly there young one!” She said and giggled. However, although she acted in such a carefree manner, she was actually concerned about him. ‘Never seen another kitsune before?! So after all it wasn’t messengers’ fault he didn’t know about me... something here is definitely not right.’

“So, Kenta, you say you’ve never seen another kitsune before... Well, you see the place I’m coming from is packed with them! It’s called Mount Inari, and I can take you there anytime you want.” she said and leaned towards him, giving him a warm glance.
“My name is Akane, and I’m half-human which is why my tails and my ears aren’t visible yet. That’s also why I wear this mask - beside my eyes it is the only mark that shows I’m half-kitsune.” she replied.
“And, well I guess I can sort of transform, I shall show you sometime if you wish.” she added with a smile thinking of casting a spell of illusion on him. “But first, I’d like to hear more about yourself, Kenta. And, uhhh, about this dormitory too... I think I might have lost my way to this dorm room.” she sighed and pointed her finger to a marked spot on the map.

His interest in her only became more apparent as she spoke, but he restrained himself when she showed him the map. "I'll tell you anything I can if you do the same." He offered with a smile. "As for the room, that ones around the corner from mine." He told her pointing to a room on the map midway down an intersecting hallway. "So I can get you there easy, and then you'll tell me stuff, right?"

She looked at the boy and listened to his every word with care. Surely, it wasn’t the first time she encountered a kitsune with so many questions for her, but there was something particular in his curiosity. It seemed as if something far greater than a mere satisfaction was depending on the answers he gets.

“That sounds like a square deal. Ask anything you want and I’ll try to give you the best answer I can offer.” she replied giving him a gentle pat on the head.
“And oh, I’m so glad our rooms are that close. I’m not good with places this huge... I easily get lost, so it’s good for me to have close someone reliable in case I need help. I can count on you, right?” she added trying to praise him.
She then picked up her suitcase frowning lightly to its weight, readying herself to get going.

He smiled at her, seeming to take a childish enjoyment from her praise. "Ofcorse you can. Though, wandering a place like this can be fun." He started walking down the hall, his arms behind his head in that classic relaxed pose. "You meet some interesting people in a place like this. More than just the occasional kappa I'd run into back home."

She followed slowly, a step behind him. "That's true. I was fascinated by the place at the first sight." She agreed. "Actually, I was wandering around for an hour or so before you appeared, driven by the beauty of the place and number of kinds of creatures inhabiting it."
She noticed the opportunity to finally learn something about him when he mentioned his home, so she decided to tell him more about herself and encourage him to open up. So she continued.
"You know, I spent most of my lifetime at the Mount Inari, in a really old shrine called Byakko-sha. There was not much to see there, except for priestesses, kitsune and other yokai. I also spent a few years in ordinary humans' community, but that too was nothing like this. And according to what you say, your home was no better than that either... Right?"

He shook his head. "My shrine was nothing like that. It was just one of many old shrines outside of Kyoto. There were a handful of visitors, one priestess... people would pray there on holidays, but... Not a lot of spirits were around... Kinda felt like they avoided the old place... I wandered around the city a lot though. People mistook me for some kind of cosplayer, so fitting in with humans was easy at least..."
