Cabel Sokot exhaled and his breath turned to curling lines of smoke.
Caleb was laying across three desks he'd pushed together. The cigarette was held dispassionately between his two fingers; it was a look he'd perfected by spending too much time in fine art museums and hipster coffee shops. He wasn't supposed to smoke in school, but he didn't care. It's not like anyone was going to stop him.
Two people were dead and the third was in the hospital. It was probably Cabel's fault. He knew he should feel worse about it, but the only thing he felt was a restlessness in his legs. He tapped the left one against the desk, over and over again.
Cabel couldn't deal with this. He probably shouldn't be alone, he decided.
So he'd go on an adventure. All he needed was someone to go with him. He didn't get off the desk, but he tilted his head back and yelled, "Yo! Hey!"
He put the cigarette back to his lips and took another drag.
He waited for someone to walk into the empty classroom before he said anything.
